Hey everybody, Ive been doing a lot of research about putting together my first box mod and am now just waiting on the parts. I'm gunna be running dual 18650's in parallel with a mosfet to save my switch. But now I have a wiring question... I want to use solid 16 gauge copper wire, but I don't want to solder a lead from the switch directly to the lead going from the pos of the batteries to the 510. Could I run the wire from the switch through the pos connection o the battery sled and then route it up to the 510 adapter?

look at the pics of mine on page 1 ... I think I wired it like what you are saying...

Read all about it, ordered some parts, joined some groups on FB, saved lots of pictures, ...
Dusted off the soldering iron, broke out the 2x reading glasses, ...
And it can be done... :p

That looks perfect! Do you have a mosfet hidden at the top?

That looks clean! I want to run the least amount of wire as possible, yours looks pretty minimalistic(aside from the usb). Thanks for the help! Hopefully I can get the wiring right! haha I'm just waiting for my resistor and box to come in now.

Do you have your negative threaded through the bottom connection like the positive?

No, That is a keystone battery sled, they have big tabs on the back side of the contacts. I cut the ears off the tabs, then bent them towards the front of the box, then soldered my 14 ga solid to the contacts, it's under the sled tight against it. Didn't do thread on bottom for a couple reasons. Also make sure you have 3 mm clearance of the + wire coming off the spring loaded 510. When you put atty on that spring loaded 510 will drop down.

There are a few ways to solder wires on those contacts, but I like clean. You can solder on front edge, on top of contacts.

This is how I plan to wire my setup, any thoughts on wiring or placement? I'm also using the keystone sled I already cut the tabs though thinking they would short out with the box.

P.S. Sorry for hijacking the thread

That will work. If your building in a Hammond B box. There is a mile of room in it, isnt hard at all for dual 18650's. If you are building in a Hammond G box takes a well placed set-up, it's tight. If possible I recommend keeping your Mosfet as far as you can from the 510, just in case there is over heating of atty, or juice leakage. But that is just a recommendation, I've seen people directly mount Mosfet leg on 510 ground. LOL!

Thanks for the help! I'm using an off brand 4x2x1 box so its similar to the Hammond G. So I'm all about saving space, but I don't know about directly connecting the mosfet to the 510o_O haha seems a bit sketchy to me. Hopefully I'll have the rest of my parts tomorrow and can finally start the build. I'll post up some pics once its done! It's going to be a big upgrade from my K100 with an IGO haha now I just need a new atty...

It will be a game changer. (Trust me) Do you have the box yet? If so can you post Pic? G boxes are GONE! Back ordered everywhere unless you wanna pay $30.

I was originally planning on baking a wooden box but quickly realized that was a lot harder than it sounded. Anyways I ordered the FDV 510 for the wooden box, hopefully the extra length doesn't cause me any trouble

Nice size box. They stand offs they use for the lid screws will be your challenge. If they would only put them in the very edge of the box, it would make life easier for the Box modder :)

Ohhh no haha I didn't even realize that, hopefully I can make it work, I'm planning on putting in magnets as soon as the get here from China. I might be able to rig something to get a bit of extra space

If you have to take those stand off's out, you could maybe epoxy magnets to the very outside corners inside box, then epoxy the magnets in lid too to match the location. Just have to see what you got when all your parts come in....

Thats exactly what I was thinking about doing! haha I'm trying to pre-bend all of my wires right now, and I'm finding that 14 gauge is a bitch to work with. Would 16 gauge solid copper be able to handle the current? What about using stranded(last resort), or maybe a mix of 14 and 16?

You can use the 16 ga coming off the fet to switch. I like the 14ga solid over stranded because the solid holds the bends tighter. See a lot of people using 16ga though, so just my thoughts.
I use needle nose pliers to get a good sharp bend with the solid...

I'll see if I can get the 14 into the right shape, I already have the battery pos an negative wires into shape. I think I'm going to have to see what I can work into my box and go from there tomorrow(hopefully). Thanks again for all of your help!

I like that project box. Looks like it would make a really nice box mod.
I picked up this one last time I was at mouser and a few 1590b's. It's a nice little box and just about the same dimensions as the 1590g.

I wish my sleds would drop into my mail box so I can build some more. I have like 15 push button switches now and 9 mosfets and resistors. All I need is those damn sleds. I could not beat the china price of 1.33 each though. Just taking for EVER to ship.

I have a huge padded envelope that the USPS can't loose, here with me. If you don't see those magnets by Saturday, I'll mail 8 more monday @Resnik

Im waiting on battery sled too. LOL Vape3D dual26650

That box was a bust:( it had 4 more stand offs inside and way to many ridges on the inside for me to spend the time modding it to work... The search for a new box begins, hopefully I can find one around and not have to order it.

Yeah most of the plastic box's I have seen come with stand offs inside. Those will have to be cut off, but it's not hard to do. If you have some type of dremel that would make quick work of it. If you don't have a dremel go to harbor freight and buy a cheap one. It will last a long while especially if you are only using it to cut plastic. From the looks of it that is really close to the Hammond plastic boxes I've seen a LOT of people making box mods out of.

@Dutzy I'll probably try something like that next time I build a 1590g to save on space. Thanks for the look.

@Wabah58 Yeah me too, but I'm hoping it gets pushed through. If anything It will be here by next Saturday at the latest and hopefully I'll be building another box or two then.

Alright now that I've seen it done I don't wanna give up on the box so easily. However i wanted to build this mod to save a little money vs buying a new (original) mod. So I don't really want to spend the $40 on a new dremel, I'll see what I can rig up though. Seeing all of the components in the box, it's gunna be a tight fit. Lets see what happens.

I like the size of that box, nice and compact! I need something that fits easy in my pocket. How long does mousers shipping usually take?

They are fairly fast. Like 3 days on both orders I have got from them from the time it was shipped. I always order on a Friday or Saturday though and they never ship out until the following Monday like most places.

Size compare. Plastic 1591 center. It's the EXACT same dimensions as the 1590g holding them side by side.

I'm so far past being "ready" to build. I just need my damn sleds lol I say again.

Cool. Great to some builds starting. Im forced to do a B box build, since all the Hammond G boxes are backordered :( Talk about a downer. Love the G boxes...
Im sitting in the corner too with Resnik waiting for a 26650 sled.

I should of ordered 10 of everything like Resnik, the demand for these boxes is huge.

Maybe you can take a power drill with a little bigger bit than the screw hole post, and drill that post down
like that?

Haha heres a pic of what I have, I don't have the box though because when I saw it at Radio Shack all the extra stand offs turned me off of it. I might just run over there right now and grab some resistors and the box so I can start the build. I was thinking about ordering the box Resnick recommended, and hopefully it would be here the same time as the resistors I already bought.

Edit: I'm waiting for the seller of my switch to get back to me too, and send me the switch with screw terminals that i actually ordered.
Edit part 2: Seller got back with me and the right switch is on the way! Now it looks like I already have the switch for my next mod

Yeah that is a huge switch. It's nice to file off some of the plastic of battery sled where you can tuck in your wire, when it's going in box. also filing down the corners help get wires up or down box in tight fit areas.

I got some like 10 bucks for 5 from china that have a really nice clicky and are 12mm. They are the pack of 5 switches above the 10 piece board of 18650 protected chargers.

This may not be the right spot, I am new but I can not to seem to find a mod building 101 anywhere, so I'd like to build my first mod for dripping and really just need something with a good 10hr plus battery life and still blowing clouds? Suggestions

Is an RC battery or a series of 18650 0r 26650 going to allow a smaller 30 to 100 watt mod to run at apt voltage?

Not sure where you are going there. I have a dual 18650 box mod running in parallel and I for the most part build .4 to .8 ohm coils. This set up will get me a good 8 hours before the battery dips low or gets to the point it's going to damage them if I drain them any further. So a good stable 6 hours life and maybe up to 8 before they have to be charged.

Does going up to 300 watts with some of the chips that were discussed give you a wider range of control of juice tempreture in smaller increments or allow it to just burn hotter and hotter?
