Turning tank over/ equalising pressure- does anyone actually do this?

Hello everyone, I hope you are all OK.

I was reading a review of an RTA, which reminded me of something I had forgotten about myself. This was after filling a tank, turning it upside down to "equalise the pressure" and prevent leaking.

Now, I have never done this myself, and haven't really suffered with leaky tanks.

So I wondered does anyone actually do this, and if you do, do you find it to work to stop tanks leaking? Or was this more of a thing with very old RTA's? Even with my Orchid I never did this and didn't suffer any leaking. Or is it possible it is just a myth that people have continued to do?

I really do not know if it does what it is meant to or not, so it would be nice to know from people that do this, or someone that does know for sure if it does equalise the pressure.

Yep do it all the time with
  • Boreas
  • Modfather
  • Voltrove
  • Proto
  • Ohmega Alpha One
If I don't they leak

OK, it's good to hear from someone who actually finds it does stop leaking. I will have a look through my bag today of things that don't get used much, I can't think of any tanks that did leak but there may well be some I have forgotten about that I stopped using because of leaking (I have memory problems due to my brain damage).

I might find something I really liked but couldn't use. I had completely forgotten about this turning the tank over thing until I read the review I mentioned, and wondered if it really worked or not.

Oh there are some that no matter what you do it doesn't help, the VCMT comes to mind. I loved the way it vaped but no matter what it always pisses juice due to the shitty press fit at the base.

Flipping is what you commonly hear for "burping", there are some devices that need to be burped. The way I do it is
  • Fill the tank
  • screw the top on until the last one or two twists I'll flip it
  • Tighten the cap and open the afc
  • Close the afc then flip it back
That usually does the trick

Hi @conanthewarrior  how have you been? Well I hope

I do it with the original Serpent, yes I still use it at night only. I also do it with the Serpent Mini & the Serpent Mini 25. Pretty much any rta that doesn't have juice flow control, I burp. It works!

Hi @Heartsdelight , I've been well thanks :), how have you been?

It's good you still use the original serpent- if you find an RTA you like you might as well use it :). I still mainly use my Crius's and Griffin, even though I have plenty of other tanks.

The serpent mini I do use on my Istick Pico, luckily I haven't found that to be a leaky one for me. I will keep it in mind though for any tanks I do find that leak.

I think I have jinxed myself though, today my SS crius is really leaking above the airflow, where the juice flow control spins. With the juice flow closed it isn't leaking, but when open it is.

I did actually try this turning over, or burping the tank, but it didn't seem to work. Reading @r055co 's description though I might of done it wrong, I wasn't shutting the airflow after turning it over. I will give it a go, hopefully it works as I love those tanks.

Never knew of burping an rta... maybe I would have enjoyed my vaporesso gemini and original griffin instead of shelving them after a day and going straight to drippers.

The Gemini and Griffin are two of my favourite RTA's! They never leak on me, and the Gemini can really chuck some vapour with the right build in there!

I would give them another go- compared to the tanks I learned on wicking them is a breeze, and it could well just be the wicking. Those tanks and the Crius are my most used RTA's.

@r055co , I wouldn't believe this myself unless it had happened to me, but I followed your instructions- my Crius isn't leaking now. I can't believe I started a thread about this yesterday, and a tank that has never leaked on me started to today, and doing this worked.

On the Boreas this is absolutely essential or it will piss everywhere as I sadly found out

Except Bullet point missing from the above as a first step

close the AFC first...then remove top cap

That is one thing I have always done- I had never 'burped' my tanks until today, but I always closed the airflow, or juice flow on tanks that have this option.

If not, I would get it leaking everywhere over me and my mod. I nearly killed a mod this way, it went everywhere inside the mod and over the board. I managed to clean it off properly though and it worked luckily.

Yep same thing happened to me mate on the HPriv at the time was covered in half a tanks worth of juice to say I was cheesed of was an under statement ...the Boreas is very unforgiving when refilling that's why a lot of folks were drawn to the supreme I guess who knows don't have that one yet

Once I found out the right way to do it didn't leak after that maybe a tiny bit of seeping from the AFC but nothing a quick wipe didn't sort and doesn't continue after vaping it

Mike vapes did a review on the Boreas in it he showed how to do it in there if you'd prefer to watch how's it's done ...sometimes easier if your a visual learner :) think it's in the vid below near the end

I don't do it like he did in the video. I close it, refill, put the top on and turn upside down and open and close the afc. I thought that was the correct way. I don't have leak issues.

I do this everytime with the Boreas or it's leak city. If I wick it with a ton of cotton it sometimes won't leak, but I don't like using as much cotton as I would with an RDA. I've been tempted to drill a hole in the top cap and fit it with a grub screw as a "burp valve" but it would probably be just as much trouble as flipping it over before opening the airflow back up.

You know, a tank would have to be pretty great, better than anything else by a wide margin, before I'm doing all the things I read about how to prevent this or that.

"Look honey, vape mail' would be my answer, move along to something that doesn't have special needs.

From the quick reviews and initial forum posts, I have had SO many pieces of shit that I don't bat an eye when I shitcan something that doesn't please me.

That is true, and I agree with this at this time, as there are so many great RTA's available on the market. I can understand when there was far fewer options having to put up with things like this though.

I have many tanks that go unused, or rarely used, with some that get a lot more use that I love. The Crius is one of them, and I never had issues with it before until recently. I have to do the turning over thing with it, but I think it is worth it as they suit me very well, and give great flavour.
I'm willing to put up with doing it on the Crius as I like it so much.

Nice I'll have to try that!

I've never even closed the airflow on mine. Takes a lil longer but I found leaning it to one side and slowly filling it works best.

But you have to deal with removing the tank from the mod to fill, once I got my first top fill I swore never to go back to bottom fill ;)
I got 3 topfills and went back to bottom fills.
NO leaks and just as simple to me.
Ohh I still use my topfills some but they are not my steady users.
I use Serpents on my Kato clones.
Never use my Lemo2's though....

Opposite for me. Removing the Tank from the mod is a much bigger pain in the ass then the very few Tanks that I need to burp.

Bottom fill
  • Remove the Tank
  • Remove the base
  • Fill
  • Replace base
  • Put tank back on Mod
  • Adjust "again"

The "few" that need burping
  • Remove cap
  • Fill
  • Replace cap and flip

the point was the Boreas is a topfill tank but Joseph mentioned to try bottom filling it instead sounds interesting although wonder how long it takes to drain up the sides

You forgot close airflow on many.
And reopen airflow.

Not sure what the adjust thing is on the last step for bottom fill...

Been bottom filliing a STM on a Kbox mini mod 2-4 time daily for almost 2 years.
Threads and such still fine on both tank and mod.

top fill if you want I hate fighting dribbles.
Just me though.

Adjustments the 510 pin

Bottom line is this, remove the tank from the Mod or just flip the tank. Many like myself find flipping the tank quicker, faster and easier, that's why top fill is so popular and bottom fill is pretty much a dead design.

But use what ever works for you.

Yeah, the little tank I'm using right now is bottom fill and it's a little aggravating since I don't have a lot of grip in my left hand. Sometimes if I screw it on the mod a little to hard it tightens up the deck to the point I can't get it loose. Another time I went to refill before it was completely empty and dumped a quarter tank of juice on top of my brand new hohmwrecker because the glass came loose! That really sucks!!

Got a Boreas in the shopping cart waiting on payday! :)

If you don't refill the Boreas in the right way same thing will happen hehe don't say I didn't warn you! ...still once you get it down Just Becomes second nature takes all of 5 seconds jobs a gooden! Vapes like a champ it's a proper workhorse atty

Yeah, I read the boreas thread - all 158 pages of it. :)

I don't know, I guess I need to stay with something simple like the medusa like I planned in the beginning. After reading all the hype on the boreas, when I found them for $17 I figured I would get one.

One thing about the medusa, as long as you don't overfill it, there's no way it can leak.

If I have to let air in the tank regularly in order that the atomizer wick properly, it's a sure sign that I did the wicking wrong. So I redo it.

But there are two instances in which I store my tanks upside down to equalize pressure: if I fly onboard an airplane, or if I drive up a high mountain. In both cases, If I don't do that, I find the lower outside air pressure pulls juice out of the tank and I get a very messy piece of luggage.

every atty is capable of leaking in one form or another ...lose oring, overfilling, not filling while performing the right ritual, AFC loose, condensation, not keeping it right way up etc etc

Can minimise leaking to almost nothing but there will always be a little bit to wipe away at some point using an atty just varying degrees how bad that is on some at least that's my experience so far

If i leave a setup with a tank on it in my vehicle in warm weather, I put it upside down in a cupholder. Any tank can and will leak from lower external pressure or raised internal pressure from heat.
