What would you consider a good all-purpose SS wire?

I have a nice set of 3mm alien coils I bought from a member here but before I take a chance on ruining them, I want to get a small spool of stainless wire and practice making some simple single wire builds and working out hotspots, etc.

I just wonder if I would be better off with 26g or smaller, or will the 24 be ok? Dual coils, 3mm, 4.5 wraps comes out to .2 according to steam engine wit 24 g.

Yeah, I know these are dipshit stupid questions, but I'm hoping you bear with me. I learn quick. :)

26g is a good all around gauge.

Hard to say if 24g is too much, depends on your device and batteries or if a mech, what battery you have.

And it's pretty hard to ruin a coil.

I've got a 10' roll of 24g KA1 that I got with my coilmaster kit. I'll be using it on a Hohmwrecker G2 in an rda so I could run the kanthal in XXX in the G2 in temp control, but I've read so many singing the praises of SS, I kinda wanted to try it. I really don't know if I'll be able to tell the difference. :)

Edit: I'm using Samsung 25Rs

SS is a cleaner taste to me, with that setup you can push 24g coils no problem.

Build with kanthal while you're waiting on your SS, I hate waiting :vapemail:

Thanks a ton. I'll build the kanthal tomorrow and try the SS as soon as I can get it from Kidney Puncher. :)

One Hohmwrecker fan to another my advice with SS316 in temp control is to go straight into xXx mode and start with a value of 15.0% and work up or down from there to suit your wire and preferred vape. The Hohmwrecker also shines in power mode compared to other regulated devices. You probably know this but SS works well in power mode. I bet you start finding little need for KA1 once you make the switch to SS. I've been using my stockpile of Kanthal to practice more complicated coil builds.

26g and 36g two gauges every new builder should have in thier arsenal :)

Although 24 and 34 works as well

When doing fancy stuff thinner gauges can be harder to work with to start out although when sticking to simple wraps 28g is pretty good ramp up will be quick handy on a mech

Thanks! Yeah it does a great job. I haven't figured out TC yet, but I love it in power mode. At 20 watts I get what feels like the same temp vape I get from the istick basic, but it's a crisper taste.

I want to get my rda working so I can do some more experimentation with the settings. The little GS Air 2 tank I'm using on it right now may not have enough metal in the coil to let it work like it's supposed to.

Thanks KingPin. I doubt I will be doing anything fancier than mmaybe a twisted coil sometime. With pretty much only one hand to work with, I can manage the coil jig to do a simple coil but wrapping clapton wire is not in the cards right now. Someday I may figure out a "third hand" somehow to hold everything but right now I want to master simple single wire coils and get those to work right. Then I'm gonna install my nice Raymo coils. :D

No problem at all, bud. :)

According to steam engine I can make a pair of 3mm, 4 wraps, 24g, that will ohm out @ about .2 for the pair. At about 40 watts should be right in my "sweet spot" so to speak. As soon as my wife's soap opera goes off, I'm gonna get her to help me cut some wire off the spool and see what I can do with it.

I'm gonna try spacing the wraps about a mm or so and see if they'll heat up evenly like they're supposed to. I'll try different things until I find something that works. ;)

Not sure if this would be something to look into M but I put this rig together really need only one hand to hold the drill once everything is set up ...can use something else to guide the fishing line spooler along the track even some kind of pully attached to it with a string cord could help you make some of those claptons etc works a treat make all my stuff using it apart from the the more tricky hand only parts like alien wrapping

No one mentioned that there are different types of SS wire. I use SS316L, 24g for single coil and 26- 28g for dual. (faster ramp up)
However I'm quite happy with simple single wire builds.

I use SS316L almost exclusively mostly 22ga and 24ga. I pretty much stick to simple coil builds though.

Im new too. Im trying my first ss316 coils. When I first switched to TC on my Smoant Battlestar the watts switched to 100 and the temp is in celsius at 200°C. When I switched from power mode my watts were at 50. Wondering whats going on here. I thought it was going to be °F. Can I adjust the wattage back down or is this normal?

Just get a spool of MKWS Staggered Fused Clapton Ss316l or Alien (tho it's not true Aliens still great wire), or Fused Clapton all from MKWS off FastTech. Price is very reasonable and wire is flawless. As long as you kno how to wrap a coil to achieve whatever resistance your shooting for it works great in temp control!

Some mods will switch to °F if you run the temp all the way up or down past the °C limit.

@SirRichardRear knows the ins and outs of the Battlestar.

Sweet rig! That's similar to what I had in mind! :)

Yeah, I didn't specify, but I can actually use several different types of SS - probably 316L.
I use SS316L almost exclusively mostly 22ga and 24ga. I pretty much stick to simple coil builds though.

I tried the 24G Kanthal today and it was a chore being so stiff and springy. I messed up one coil trying to install it and had to make another. When I finally did get em in there and adjusted the meter said .23 and steam engine said it should be .20. Not too shabby. That shit is AMAZING! :D

@MWorthington
The G2 has an excellent SS mode. It has 304, 316, 317, and 430 presets. I rarely need to go into xxx with my SS builds.

I need to get a better atomizer for ME. The one I bought is identical to the MadDog and it's a good atty, but the post holes all in a row make it extremly hard on a one-armed, blind old newbie! :) I wicked up fine I thought but when I turned the power up high enough to heat the coils it spit molten hot juice out the tip so bad I couldn't vape it. I started out on 20 watts and barely got a whiff out of it so I moved up 5 at a time until I got to 40 watts where it would fire well, and that was unvapeable.

I'm gonna try the original Medusa with velocity deck and see if that'll work better. ;) I'm gonna order some 26g wire as well that'll be a little easier to work with. I really want to get simple coils down if nothing more than to prove to myself I can do it.

That mkws fused clapton may be alright but I got a spool of their half staggered fused clapton in ss316L - pure shit. It's sloppy ass built wire and wouldn't bother spending the $5 from FT for it again. I've twisted up my own ss316L using 26g UD, helluva lot better than that mkws crap. It's just not a good indicator of what advanced coil builds are like. People warned me, I figured it was only $5. They were right.

I've seen other janky ass 'advanced' wire from other companies using all kinds of garbage like core wires 'claptoned' with ribbon wire that turns it into a sad looking tiger coil. Most likely to use less material and really space out those wraps, on a staggered fused build instead of the fused wraps being spaced every 1/16" or so they end up spaced around 3/16".

Looking at their clapton wire it suffers the same as the half staggered fused stuff. The wrap wire is too damn big for the core wires which may explain the shitty ramp up time. Seems a lot of folks who actually wrap their own use like a 24 or 26g ss316L with a wrap of 36-40g. Mkws uses 28g with 32g wrap, that's not much difference between core and wrap.

I didn't read everything but talk to @raymo2u he was working on a drill that was operated by a foot pedal. Though, I'm not sure if that's all you need to one hand a Clapton, I am sure it would be much easier.

But on the topic the gauge I have used the most is 28 gauge wire. I used it for years as plain coil then now in fused clapton.

That would be awesome! I'm so surprised one of the companies or franchises like TM, Squidoode etc haven't jumped on something like that yet would make the process easier for everyone

4 wraps of 24 on a 3mm is only .2 ohm for the pair?..may want to re check that.

According to steam engine, 24g, 3mm, dual coils, single KA1= 4.07 wraps for a target resistance of .20 ohms. On the meter they measured .23 ohms so accounting for a small amount of internal resistance from the atty, that's pretty darn close. My G2 measured them at .24.

Oh ok..i had ss316 on my brain..thats all ive been using now for months...I need 10 wraps to get around the .25ohm range.

Youll like that ss wire when you get it...all those extra wraps equal more flavor/clouds at that ohm range you like.

Yeah, I've been talking about both so much it's hard for ME to keep up with sometimes. :) Right now I'm playing around in steam engine to decide between 26 and 28g ss316.

Depends on desired wattage...... Most of my vaping is below 20watts... my goto is 28awg....... regardless of type For single wire builds and 32awg for twisted builds. Above 20watts I go to 26awg and 30 for twisted.
