My Alien went up in smoke today :-/

Disclaimer, I'm unsure the point of this post other than to just vent a little.

I left for work today with my usual 2 mods with fresh batts and full tanks. It's ~30 min drive and I was vaping the Alien the whole way. Once I arrived I grabbed my Pico and left the Alien in the car standing up in the center console(so the atty wouldn't leak).

I returned at lunch time to sit in the car and eat the lunch I brought from home. I finished eating and was enjoying the vape from my Pico when this terrible smell of burning electronics hit me. The first thing I did was look at and smell the Pico thinking WTH before looking down at the Alien and seeing bright white smoke and an orange flame coming from around the USB port.

I opened the car door with my first thought to chuck the whole thing out into the parking lot but then realizing that nothing was coming from the vent holes I proceeded to unscrew the atty then remove the batteries. The batteries were pretty warm but not so much as I couldn't handle them.

I feel very fortunate that it happened while I was there to kill the power. More than likely it would have just been a big stink of burnt electronics but you never know. I think I'll be removing the batteries from the mods I leave in the car from now on.

Was it hot out? I don't think its recommended to leave batteries and mods in cars when its hot out. Especially if you live near the huge heatwave near Arizona.

It was warm but not too bad no where near Arizona hot. Actually there had been a few passing showers and clouds with the remnants of that tropical storm passing through.

That's why u don't leave your mods in the car even on a warm day it can get rather hot inside a car

I'm not buying it. I can see it not being very good for your batteries, maybe... hell there's all kinds of other electronics in their getting hot that don't short out and catch on fire.

IMHO you should get at least a year :p

Mine did the same in my 72F house two months after I bought. Not that leaving your mod in a hot car is good but I doubt that was the reason.

Being under warranty I sent it to Madvapes (Smoat's U.S. repair place), they received it 5/10, verified by signature. After multiple emails and phone calls to support (where I got transferred and dropped on every call) I still have no communication from them Pretty much thinking I will never get it back.

I keep seeing all of these problems with the Alien posted in various places: Auto firing, venting, screens dying, etc. I don't think I've seen so many complaints about a mod before, so I'm glad that I never bought one. I did, however, buy a couple of the Baby Aliens (AL85) that I haven't played with yet, so I'm wondering if those are plagued by the same problems or do they seem better?

A friend has interest in buying her 1st mod and I had thought about giving her one of my AL85s, since the Pico 25 came out (I like the look of them better), but I'm hesitant. I don't want someone who's never used a mod before to have weird/dangerous problems with her 1st one. So, does anyone also have the Baby Alien and can comment about it's performance? I already know it's crap in TC, but my friend isn't ready for such fussyness any way, so she doesn't plan on using that feature.

DebbieNY, I don't have personal experience with the AL85, but I do a LOT of reading threads on here and the problems talked about that I've seen is a fraction of what you see with the full size Alien.

As you know, anything made by man is subject to flaws and breakage so no, it's not perfect. Nonetheless, it appears to be a decent little mod. I wouldn't mind owning one myself, but if I was gonna buy a single battery mod, I'd get the Pico simply because I've read about fewer problems with it than maybe any other mod available except possibly the Battlestar, and it hasn't been out as long as the Pico.

From what I see, if you want to PIF your friend one of your AL85s, I think she'll be happy with it and you. :)

Ah, that's good to hear! Yeah, I haven't noticed many complaints about the Baby Alien yet either (aside from the paint & TC), but I just wanted to be sure. ;) She may actually like the AL85 better, as every time she takes a vape from one of my Picos (God, I love these things!), she seems confused about where the fire button is. I'm thinking the bar on the AL85 will be easier for her. She loves my Picos, but perhaps for her 1st, having a mod that will accommodate anything up to 25mm tanks will make it easier for her to choose a tank that she likes without the 22mm restriction (she probably wouldn't even realize it until it's too late).
