As a newbie builder I was wondering if some one could point to (or briefly outline) a source on building progression. For example. You need to learn how to make a clapton wire before you can make "X" coil, and then once youve learned "X" coil build then you'll be able to make "Y" coil and so on and so on...

Another question...When youre wicking your build do you want to cram as much cotton as possible into the coil and deck or does it wick better if its just snug compared to stuffed full of cotton?

There's no progression. Build what you want when you can.
I didn't care about making clapton so I started trying to make aliens which made me good at making clapton.
You can make anything if you have someone telling you exactly how to prep it (me).

You definitely don't want to wick cotton super tight. Just try different thicknesses till you find the best flavor.

You only really want to seat the cotton snugly, yet you also want the cotton to touch the bottom of the deck so it can soak up your juice that falls to the bottom of the deck. I've found that too much cotton inhibits airflow, and too little cotton seems to hurt vapor production.

Pretty much this.
Too tight: slow wicking, poor flavor
Too loose: tastes like ass
To much tail: less air flow, poor flavor

Theres probably more that could be added that I've forgotten about.

I personally found a progression helped me this is my progression route

Twisted
Clapton
Fused clapton
Alien
Framed staple
Staple
Staggered fused clapton
Framed staple staggered fused clapton
Half framed staple staggered fused clapton
Enigma
(Also completed a dragon skin in here somewhere but it's a standalone rather than progression build)

Now working on my staggerton building

Next up is I "might" try more cores in my builds lower the gauges although I don't just make it for the pics they do actually need to be vapaple lol so whether I bother or not I shall see

Gonna try tsukas at some point

Never managed to complete a successful squalien (square alien) I always fail to coil it without it going to crap

Im working on the enigma now. What a bitch! Doing a 12ply.3/28/38. I preped 4 extra 12" decores and Im glad I did.
