Kanthal A1 22 AWG revisited - 'the wire hanger'

22 AWG has always been a PITA to work with.
  • The slightest protrusion from build deck would come in contact with chimney and short atomizer.
  • Orienting the coil for perfect airflow frequently loosened the post screws.
  • Ultra-slow ramp up.
Since I had 50 feet of 22 awg from a while back, I experimented with a few 2.0mm, 2.5mm and 3.0mm builds, with ohm ratings ranging between 0.4 to 0.7. I've discovered some merits of this gauge. It seems more resistant to gunking ... with my preferred flavors, where gunking is always an issue. My builds now last a week (or more). With 26 awg, I would change the coils almost daily.

With the slow ramp-up, some flavors vaporize earlier and therefore contribute more flavors to the puff while avoiding gunk build-up with other flavors that atomize quickly. Of course, 24awg is right smack in-between and brings out the best of both worlds (i.e., 22awg and 26awg).

Just some observations. Anyone else with a similar experience? Thoughts?

I've been using 20ga kanthal the past few weeks in different parallel mods. Today I made a single 20 for a wraith squonk. Ohms out at .57.. surprisingly more flavor and clouds than I expected from a single coil. And I like the fact I don't have to clean as often as well.

I just ordered some 22 & 24 gauge KA1 wire from fasttech. I have lots of wire but no plain kanthal. I wanted to re-visit it again too.
My FT oder just came in the mail. I wasn't thinking 22ga was thaaat big! The difference is greater than I thought. It's gunna be interesting working with it.

I will first try it in a GV Griff25 plus. Lots of room in there.
