Will be purchasing a set of Alcohol Inks in the next day or so to pimp out my SS Mods. The patina scene is ok, but the colors i would want to achieve just aren't there. Has anyone here successfully done this method? Either way lets take a journey!

Can't wait to see your results mate, I was entirely unaware of this stuff!
I've got a SS Astro that's a little boring to me outside of huge amount of diameter change throughout the mod. I run an Aqua on it, which only adds to the mismatched diameter by sitting at 21mm on a 22mm topcap.

I've done alcohol inks on Reo doors. You definitely have to clear coat it. Even then it does wear, one of my doors needs another clear coat, it's starting to wear where my thumb goes. On a mod I'd think maybe a clear wrap would be longer lasting, maybe a clear coat and then a clear wrap, especially for the areas you handle a lot.

The one on the far right here is alcohol inks, the second from the left is nail polish floated on a solution (you can float it on water but it doesn't work as well.). You have to be really fast to do the nail polish, it dries so fast. The colors are pretty much endless and it wears very well. I used that door for at least a month and can't see any wear.

Goodness me, that's a wicked coat! Sounds like it's more of a challenge to achieve a coat as fantastic as that. It honestly looks like a photograph of water being poured into a glass.

Thanks PDX! I guess it can be challenging but the good part is, if you don't like it, acetone nail polish remover takes it right off so you can try it again. That's definitely NOT my first try. lol I need to find you the name of the stuff to make the solution...OK. I used the stuff that came with this kit. Alum.

I think it was maybe a 1/4 cup in a gallon of distilled water. Could be wrong about the amount. All it does is help the paint (nail polish) float better. Water works too but you still have to be quick with both of them. Drop the nail polish on and swirl it around with a toothpick, skewer, whatever is handy. Make sure all the bottles are open and ready, you have maybe a minute.

I really like this better than the idea of doing a forced patina. Although I do like the look of the forced patina the alcohol ink looks like it can have some great results in less time and possibly less hassle.
Thanks for your postings

After finding out about this product here I had to give it a try (Thanks for sharing BJ). I picked up one of there three bottle packages from hobby lobby and went to it. This stuff is great. Very easy and quick to use. Also very forgiving If you make a mistake it wipes right off with Rubbing alcohol. First time I tried it I used to much brown and it came out darker then I wanted so did not clear coat wanted to see how long it would stay on without fading. After 6 hours of use it started coming off so removed it and tried again this time with more green. Liked the way it came out so this time clear coated it. Tell me what you think? This was done on a Brass Nemesis and a brass kraken cover.

And here it is next to a forced patina mod I was in the process of doing when I started this one.

I really like your results, think the ink looks way better than the forced patinas. Nice job!

I went with an urban type graffiti look for mine... I really wanted something unique. I didn't want to go and copy just about everyone and their mother that decided to do the ink mod... so far i've seen the same concept over and over. Start getting creative people! anyways lemme know what you guys think!!

for the colors i ended up using wild plum, cranberry, lettuce, stream, and some butterscotch (yes these are the actual names of colors haha)

I also got creative with some pressure sensitive transfers (decals)I had left over from other projects. I think this is the first time anything has been done with any types of decals, I think the overall look i got is awesome... im really happy with it for sure. Its reminds me of urban graffit / street art, which im in love with.

heres what i come up with :

P.S. I haven't clear coated it yet, which is why it still looks a little rough around the edges. I will be doing that today sometime.... if anyone has anyone questions feel free to ask!

Wow! Those are some great looking mods! I have some that need a make-over, but I'm not very confident about my artistic skills! Thanks for sharing! :)

Well, i spent all day inking my new Tree of Life SS clone. Then I put a pearl coat on it, then 5 layers of Crystal Clear. Here is the outcome!

how difficult would you say that the alcohol ink is to do?
Its not difficult to get it going, just takes patients. I took all the ink off 4 times before I got it looking the way I wanted it to. I would definitely recommend buying Blender when doing it though, and a felt stamper for it, cotton eventually sticks to it and screws it up. Headed over to check out your copper mod right now.

i wonder how using something like spanish moss would look? definatly an interesting texture, or maybe natural sponge

lol, I tried Spanish moss!(great minds think alike!) the stuff I have was breaking apart to much, I was afraid it would stick, but if you use larger pieces I bet it would be awesome! Im going to use the moss for my next copper patina though.

ive been using crystal clear enamel by rustoleum. dry to handle in 30 minutes. i usually do three coats about 5 minutes apart, let it sit overnight, give it a light wet sanding with 600 grit, then another three coats 5 min apart. gives it a real deep shine and brings out the color. of course you dont have to go as crazy as i did, two coats would be enough

Yeah, i have around 5 coats of crystal clear on her now, I think the pearl underneath is giving me the trouble, I used my favorite paint brand in the world for that, unfortunately, its some of the slowest drying in the world. Im going to have to wait for the moisture to dissipate, should only take four more days since i cleared over it lol. I might put it in the oven on 200 for a half an hour or so to bake it.

thats definatly an option, sometimes if i want to speed things along, i take a heat lamp off one of my snake tanks and put the mod under that for a while

I was going to force patina my vanilla but the alcohol ink was just too cool to not do! I love it. really added the touch I was looking for on my RDA. doesn't look as Raw anymore although it wasn't bad.

Beautiful work on these mods, I have got to try this on my Reo door.

Have completely covered my Nemy with vape bands makes turning the lock ring less of a hassle.
Check out: http://vapeband.com/ they have a wide selection and reasonable prices.

I did this box with the alcohol inks. I love the look but I didnt get a thick enough clear coat on it and some of the edges are starting to wear.
