So I may be getting a mech given to me soon and I want to make sure I learn everything I need to learn so I don’t blow my face up. I know battery safety is about making sure your wraps aren’t torn or anything like that and I know that you’re not supposed to go down past .08 on most mechs. But what else is there? Hoping for a detailed reply and mechs. Thanks!

Here’s a picture of the mod I might be getting.

It’s the phantom. It’s a single 18650 tube mech as you can see from the picture.

battery wise you'll wana go with a 30amp like the Lg Hb2 hb6 or hb4, also make sure you're using a tank or rda where the pin protrudes enough. might also want to get a voltage meter and ohms meter if you haven't done so already, also remeber to calculate your builds accurately with something like steam engine or a vape tool app. Hope this helps you out bro stay safe.

You’re right about not using batteries with any noticeable physical damage or torn wraps. About the .08 limit...that depends on what batteries you use, type of coil, vaping style, and personal preference. (Ex: Sony VTC5a’s are work horses and I’ve built down to .04 with them, certain coil builds take longer to heat up than others...if you use a very fast ramp up time type of coil, you’ll practically be pulsing rather than holding the fire button down..with pulsing you can get away with a lower Ohm build, and then if you prefer a cooler vape you can build higher or use coils with a larger mass that take longer to ramp up).
Cleaning is important, too, on the exterior, not so much (in fact some mods look better with some patina going on), but your button assembly, threads, and all contact points should be taken care of to keep any grime or gunk building up and causing more voltage drop which will cause a drop in performance. Also make sure any vent holes are unobstructed and clear. Make sure the tube itself on the inside is taken care of and there is nothing protruding or sticking out that can tear your battery wrap. Make sure any atomizers you use have a good protruding 510 pin, especially if using it with a hybrid connection device. By wary about carrying any device that doesn’t have a lock mechanism in your pocket and when setting it down to avoid auto-firing. If there is an adjustable pin for battery rattle, make sure it’s used correctly so that your battery isn’t banging around in the tube, but not so tight that it causes the mod to easily auto fire. Until you are used to building coils and knowing what they Ohm out to, don’t build on the mod...an Ohm tester should be used for building and checking your ohms out before trying it on your mod.
Keep an eye on your batteries for any black dots/marks that indicate any arcing going on.
Try to avoid draining a battery down too low...once you have a noticeable drop in performance swap out for a fresh battery. Be careful with overdripping too much as the liquid can sometimes get in the tube and all over the batteries. I’m sure I’m missing some stuff and a lot of that stuff is pretty common knowledge for anyone, but better to be safe than sorry...we have to make sure not to give the media anymore reasons to vilify the vaping community because someone builds, essentially a pipe bomb and takes off their face and hand!

You're not drinking water are you?! You realize that stuff is found in antifreeze!?!

I don’t have an ohm tester but I do have other mods that can be used as ohm testers. I’ve been building for a couple months. Mainly 22g kanthal a1 5 wraps. So nothing crazy. I’ve tried twisting my wire (kanthal a1) with 5 wraps and that was omhing at .09-.11 so I’m able to build decent coils. The guy I’m getting the coil from said he wants me to answer 2 questions in a day or two. Not sure what the questions are but I wanna be sure and get the answers right so I get the mod. So I need to know literally everything lol. Thanks for the detailed reply!

Just tell him you’ll use the highest grade Duracell C batteries you can find until your knock-off eFest batteries from China come in and comment about how much you’ve been wanting to try an 18ga Nichrome 80 dual Parallel Coil build because your regulated device won’t let you fire a .01 Ohm build.
He’s sure to just hand the mod over to you no questions asked!
(I truly hope that I don’t have to say that I’m just kidding, but my conscience wouldn’t let me post this without the disclaimer that I am 100% kidding!)

And, of course, now you have my curiosity piqued about what the 2 questions are, lol. So, I definitely wouldn’t mind seeing an update on what the questions were along with your impression of your first Mech mod! I’d say be careful not to get bit by the mech-bug, but I’ve yet to see anyone that hasn’t fallen prey to it after they’ve got their hands on one..the most notable symptom is severe weight loss in the wallet area...welcome to being broke.

Well if it's the phantom I hope one of the questions he asks is...does your 510 pin on your atty stick down far enough so that the atty doesn't touch the battery and cause a hard short....seeing as how the phantom can be used as a hybrid. do you know about using a hybrid mod?

He should be asking you to explain ohm's law. And if you can't answer or give examples, you shouldn't be using a mech. Especially at .08 ohms.

For hybrid safety:
Be sure the center part of the 510 sticks out past the threaded portion of the 510 as shown in the pictures.
Also NEVER use a subohm tank in hybrid mode.
