I never understood the idea of trying to "shame" someone for smoking. There's nothing to be ashamed of; I certainly never felt ashamed; it was just part of who I was. Hence, any doc or dentist who told me I needed to lay off smoking because of x, y, or z, just met a blank stare, and a "that won't be happening." response. Though I did cut filters in half after tooth extractions, to prevent recurrence of bleeding, I've been known to tell dentists that I could lay off smoking about as well as they could lay off breathing.

Now vaping is part of who I am, and all the same would apply -- vaping is not optional; it prevents me from going back to smoking. If I lay off vaping, then at some point very soon, I'll be thinking of smoking, and if I think of it long enough, I'll be craving it, and once I start craving it, that's pretty much all she wrote.

Along with smoking, I've had quite a few problems I've overcome. Despite how hard I was to live with, my wife never shamed me. Whether I was stinking up the house with my cig smell, or nodding out into my dinner, she exhibited great patience. I think that played a big part in helping me quit a lot of things.

shaming people does not work...unfortunately we know so little about addiction that we have little to offer people with addictions...but making them aware of exactlly the kind of damage they are doing to themselves and the people around them is something the should be reminded of.

Oh there were many of long talks and crying but never anything derogatory or demoralizing. People with serious addiction problems hate themselves enough as it is.

yeah true, and they need real solutions, but alot of us especially us smokers lived for decades by ignoring what we were doing to our bodies,it is how we dealt with our addiction we told oursleves it wasn't that bad...until the day we couldn't walk up a flight of stairs without gasping for breath, and the damage could no longer be ignored.

people love to shame each other. look around here even, theres tootle puffers shaming cloud bros, hemo (high end mods only) folks shaming people for buying clones or cheap chinese stuff, coil builders and diy juice makers acting all high and mighty over people who just buy pre made...even though we are all fighting the same battle (tobacco), and even though we get shamed for vaping ('mouth fedora, douche flute, we get it you vape, i'd rather get cancer' etc etc) we still find time to shame each other lol....

to quote the great philosopher phil anselmo, "be yourself, by yourself, stay away from me" :cuss2:

When someone tries to shame me I usually start to talk about Stanley Milgram's Obedience Study. Trust me, there's very little they can do after that (beside walk away in shame).
