Pronouncing words like Smok and others...

I think we are all devided on how we pronounce certain words not found in our dictionary. Smok is probably the most popular "how do you pronounce it" term in vaping. I say it how it's spelled. Its closer to SMOCK than it is to "smoke". Without the "e" on the end, there is no hard "O". Anyone saying it that way just sounds silly :p.

I called a vape shop to see if they had Cleito coils. The shop guy in a weird tone says to me, "Uh...you mean CLEETO coils?" I'm thinking wtf dude, you know what I'm talking about. I have always pronounced it like "KLY-toe".

Thoughts?

This is awesome. Every time I hear a Brit say "smock" my brain twists up. It'll always be smohk in my mind, because a smock is something you wear to keep paint off of your clothes while doing art, so to me it sounds super silly!

- and I say "cleeto," but I will start saying Clyto or Cly-ito because that's Greek

Funny how we make up our minds on how something is pronounced before we ever hear it...I do, anyway

Like Hermione from Harry Potter, I was young when I read the books and never heard it until the movies, so it was Her-me-own (this was before I had ever read anything Greek)

In both of those cases the manufacture pronounces them the opposite.
Smok says they are pronounced smoke
Aspire says it is pronounced kleeto.

I always chose to pronounce it as smock because I do not smoke.
I watched a video of them attempting to correct everyone, however they basically said as long as you buy their shit they don't care what you call them.

I forgot all about this.
I recall a very similar conversation taking place that said the same thing.
With that being said, my previous post would then be incorrect.
It was indeed Smoktech that was to be pronounced as smoke tek and that conversation did not specifically cover the name change when they went to Smok.
Thanks for the reminder.

No doubt, if you're buying SMOK shit, you probably aren't the sharpest tool in the shed.

I think you need a different hobby than vaping & eventually you'll be able to move out of Mother's basement.

Is there some reason you're so abrasive in this thread?...
In fact I just skimmed your very short post history and you appear to be kind of an asshole in every post since you joined VU.

Don't be a dick dude.

I really like your post to him about being so sour to everyone without any reasons. You get alot more accomplished here with a better attitude.

Thank you. I have been dicks with people but I always apologise. I have aspergers syndrome so get agitated sometimes without meaning too!

I guess I never saw where the difficulty was in 'smok' being pronounced 'smoke'. The correlation between actual smoking vs the electronic substitute. Obviously people don't want vaping to be lumped together with smoking in terms of health risks etc but to suggest vaping has nothing to do with smoking and yet vaping is still considered to be a healthier smoking cessation method is just counterproductive. The whole point was for vaping to mimic smoking or it would be pointless.

I hear a lot of people say 'smock'. Do they pronounce 'absolut vodka' as 'ab-so-lutt' with the same 'u' as 'duh'? No, it's a long U despite the lack of an E at the end. Or Brut cologne/aftershave as 'brutt' when it's again a long U as in 'brute'. Maybe I'm the exception rather than the rule, idk. If they had a food substitute or diet food called 'fud' I'd expect it be a play on 'food', not 'fudd' like Fuddruckers or of the Elmer variety. Yet the same folks have no issue pronouncing 'fubu' as 'fooboo', not 'fuh-buh'. :p

Cracks me up sometimes seeing people trying to pronounce things and all the confusion on a lot of it. I expect if there were a mod or atty called an 'align' all the sudden it would be as if speech were a new concept. "The new innokin - allen? aliggun? Yea pretty sure it's aliggun".

Not totally sure about Cleito, some say clay-toe others clee-toe. Not suh-lee-toe or clee-ay-toe though. She was Poseidon's mortal wife in Atlantis from Greek mythology.

I get what he's saying. I mean, is it also smockjoy, smocktech? The explanation made sense to me, anyway...but I'm gonna call it "Ism Okay" because Smok said I could say it however I wanted to lol

And Smo-ant, they have an Ant in the logo so I say "smo Ant" but it could be Smah Ant? Nahhh...

I just meant that sometimes it seems as if people are struggling to pronounce things like it's a new language they've happened upon. Unusual spelling of things for brands can always be a bit of a problem but I see reviewers mostly like they've discovered a whole new word. I can see a coffee cup being reviewed called a 'kup'. "this is the new coffee.. is it cap? coop.. not sure, I think it's the new coffee coop" - yea that seems likely. lol (why would it be 'cup'?) Making it harder than it has to be is all. I'll be damned though if the very same folks don't just rattle off the correct pronunciation of 'Ypsilianti' or 'Tlaquepaque' like it's nothing.

I don't get this part. This is an actual word in the English language. We all say it pretty much the same.

Considering 90% of these words are from China manufactures, I think sometimes we are subconsciously thinking of that when we see a word spelled a bit different so we're not 100% certain of the words pronunciation.
