Do you prefer it over nichrome? What do you guys like so much about SS? I prefer n80 but I'm wondering if SS has something I haven't noticed.

Even faster ramp up (some say because of it's lower resistance) , Doesn't oxidize , stronger then N80 but just as pliable and it's fucking gorgeous. Oh and most important is it's like cruise control/TC for mech users, as it heats up resistance jumps up decreasing amps pulled and it's quite a bit I can have my typical .07 setup jump over .1 then in 10 seconds it's .07 again. It's really great

I will have to try it some more. I've mainly just used it for tc and haven't tried it much on a mech. Seems like I will have to give up some surface area though if I want to stay above 0.14

Yes that's where SS is a problem, if you vape regulated/series mods then just stay with N80/kanthal you have alot more building options. SS is typically half the resistance of kanthal (3x28G 38G ka1 aliens are .2 , .1 with all SS)

Chef did a test of ni80 against stainless steel and it was the ni80 that heated up faster both times. I like stainless myself and prefer its taste over nichrome but the test said it all for ramp up times as I saw it

I'm sorry let me edit a piece of that, if you use wattage then I'd stay with N80/KA1 . Most regulated devices will vape .05+ in TC so SS is great for TC (lock resistance yadda yadda) skip all that mess and buy a tube

First coils for me. Did a fused Clapton 316SS 28X2 34 wrap using a Spool Tamer came in at .24 ohms. Looked great till I zoomed the picture and saw the gap. If I’m going to fix that I may need to get magnifying glasses and better lighting that 34 is hard to see:D5CFEFEDB-854D-4CB2-9216-96DFC3215EBB.jpeg

Good job Carmmond! :) keep this pic as a memento a year from now it's great looking back see how far youve come:cheers:

when you first start its hard not to focus on everything going on at once drill speed...how much tension your holding on the cores...holding the spool trying to keep the set angle and maintain tension

The other stuff falls away after a few goes until all you need to think about is trust your prep and maintain the angle and go warp speed

Here was my first ever go at a clapton which is nowhere near as good as the one you just did ;)

D2E5DE52-C9AD-4281-8498-5FC979649B0C.jpeg

Before long you can do them with your eyes closed using smaller gauge wire
1CABF228-06B4-4871-A6B0-E7B37BC408B5.jpeg

After you crack that give aliens a go great fun and very rewarding biggest stepping stone in coil building I think and a huge milestone worth celebrating :)

I see the builds others post in here truly inspiring and all of it possible with Practice and patience with a few tips to make life easier along the way which you pick up

Sounds like I’m going to have to lose the spool tamer and do it by hand. Looking at a set of these....
http://vapingunderground.com/threads/for-those-struggling-to-see-your-work.364800/
And a couple hundred ft of wrap wire and I’ll give it hell.
Kinda sorta , make the tension on spool tamer almost non existent and turn the spool around then rip.
Magnifying lamp/headset kinda helps and kinda makes things worse but for the most part you won't need them for builds like that.
You'll start seeing just hot the light reflects off your wrap when it's perfect as it spins and slight gap because of a gray and a week later you'll laugh and throw it away.

You did a great job btw... I remember a year ago and it's really funny.
Ask questions and have fun.

I could have told you without watching, watt for watt, Ni80 heats up faster than SS316L. Wait... I already did tell everyone that without watching! :D

As for how the metal tastes, I'm in the Ni80 tastes better than SS316L camp, and I also agree Ni80 lasts a LOT longer than SS316L. I use either Ni80 or KA1 for my cores, strictly Ni80 for my wrap wire... if using KA1, then I dry fire a LOT before I start to use the coils, and, after I dry burn, I rinse with carbonized water to avoid getting brown rust─it works, and I learned to re-wick and juice up fast before the rust stands a chance to return. I don't use KA1 on a single battery tube mech so strictly Ni80 on that (27g/36g dual coil aliens at .11 ohms, 4.5 wraps, 2.5mm ID). KA1 is for keeping the ohms up high enough so I don't end up below .1 on my regulated mods with certain builds (e.g. SSFC) because the mods don't fire below .1, as well as so I (on my stacked mechs) don't get throat fucked by satan.

Try a Hohm Slice Carambrda, those will fire close to a dead short.

I tried it with my old Nickel wires on TC mode and it was giving me okay flavor, it was just the Nickel wire drops the resistance too far past the danger zone for me to be comfortable with it, even though my Hohm Slice is regulated. That and I can barely put any wattage at all on it without my box and tank getting hotter than the blazes (I'm starting to get better at tricking with my Obese Buddha, so I'm starting to use that on a more permanent basis), and I don't get the clouds I'm looking for.

No need for me to try a Hohm Slice. If my build turns out to be below .1 it means I'll just use it on a single battery mech, as I know how to build in such a way that I'll never end up so far below .1 that it would be too impractical/unsafe for me on that... at .1 - .11 it means I'll try it on the mech first to see how it fares, then move it to my RX300 if necessary just like I did with those 12ply .4×.1 Ni80 / 40g Ni80 staples, albeit with that much metal it was easy to know beforehand it was going to go on the RX300, on which it vapes really excellent due to using ArcticFox power curves so without those power curves killing that ramp up these excellent coils would have gone in the trash can.

Why am I thinking I shouldn’t start wrapping and just dig through all your trash cans:devil:
Honestly thanks for the tips and time you’re right there will be a day I throw out what I made last night but for now I’m sure loving the flavor.... again thanks!
You won't find any well-performing coil builds in my trash. Either they're completely worn out or they just didn't provide a satisfying enough vapor... part of the reason why I don't often build new coils is because they'll typically last me at least 2 months─and I've gotten more than a few of those awesome .11 aliens for free.

@Carmmond nice work man  if you are using a spool tamer and its giving you spaced wrap when you start your drill up, use your free hand to slow down/stop the tamer from advancing (with the drill on slowly). the wraps will kind of jam up together, eliminating the space, then you can let go and the rest of the length of wire should finish properly (as long as your wire is spooled cleanly and doesnt snag up).

Few fuck ups with this but ugly people need loving too lol. Also the cleanest I've done with 38g staggered fusing. 3*28g ss316l/38g ss316l staged with 26g Kanthal.

It's a fairly decent vape, nice production but the flavour doesn't seem to be there for me. I haven't got it in my go to at the minute which is the pyro, still got a staged alien build in there, so it could be that. Have to do a few more and try it out in different attys

Love ya Caramb. How was your be years I have to agree, Nichrome is leagues better in every aspect for my vape preference. It lasts longer and is no where near as finicky to fuck with as ss316l. I will say, that for some reason quad twisted, and Hive wire really Excell with 28g SS. I have no idea why, they just tend to vape better than the Nichrome and kanthal hive/twisted variants.

Got my portable build station thingy started. I need a mat to cover the base board and maybe some dowels to hold wire spools.

Yes my Xmas tree is still up. Why take down the tree when you can do vape stuff?

Can someone clarify how many wraps are on these coils. It's a 5/4 wrap right?

So I had it wrong way round, no worries. It's still not just a 4 wrap though, there's more wire and therefore more resistance than that

My Pyro has been in China since November 28, oh well, maybe I'll be a pro at coiling by the time I get it, and have some stagertontrackabraids ready to put in it.

I Vaped on some for the first time today. Man what a good vape. Flavor like crazy and super fast ramp up with n80. I didn't build them though, Screwball did. Maybe my wire will be here next week. Kbeevapes takes a minute on their free shipping.

Cattracks don't look to be too bad if you can make it through the hammer process. Well wrapping a ton of cores is a pain I'm sure. Purecoils has 30 core in their tracks but the look so damn cool.c

I had forgotten about cattracks! Those were actually pretty fun to make. Didn’t have much in the way of decent tools to make them though...I just scrolled back quite a ways through old pics and found where I took a picture of when I was making them and what I was using...can you get tetanus from a pic?

Yep, set up, made a 3x28/36 fused first to test the setup, decided on a small keyring to help the cores stay lined up and practiced almost no tension on the clapton wireIMG_20180103_103958_crop_1500x1500.jpg

Edit: Okay honestly, I made a fused clapton first because I was so worried about getting the cores centered in the drill that I forgot to make the decore first!

That was my third, and I went reallly slow. My first with 3 cores did not stay flat of course, key ring is helping this time.

You put it on the swivel side of your wrap wire and slide it along as you wrap and it holds your cores flat. I prefer paperclips or core holders from USA ohm meters but I know a lot of people swear by keyrings.

If I could take back a shitty idea for prep to save myself months of frustration it'd be keyring/hair clip.
Do yourself a favor and stop that, use a ribbon slider or 2 , I use a piece of tape or 2 most times.
Keyrings, hair clips, these are extra weight, this extra weight when stopped / started causes twisting and the further you work down the stick the worse it gets until it collapses.
I promise
