Complete failure hahaha. I need to watch some videos I guess.

I’m not seeing a complete failure..if nothing else, your Decore wire looks consistent as hell so, even though your wires may have gone into the dreaded triangle configuration rather than staying flat, it looks like you are good and steady with feeding the Decore into the cores without it backtracking by not leading enough or big inconsistent gaps from leading too far. For me, I had to practically “accidentally” find the right amount of stretching for my Decore and “accidentally” hitting the right rhythm. Once I felt those things click from trial and error I knew what kind of “feel” I was searching for that would produce a good looking length of Alien wire.
Not to mention with that level of zoom you’re taking pics at, you could find errors all day long in practically everyone’s coil builds, lol.

Edit: I keep a set of toothless needle nose pliers next to me while doing that step of Aliens because you’ll eventually start seeing if your wires are starting to slip from being flat into a twist or triangle rather than flat while wrapping your Decore...if I feel and see that, I can stop and slightly pinch that section of wire back that I just wrapped with Decore to perfectly flat without damaging the wire with the toothless pliers and that straightens out the unwrapped section of cores in front of where I’m wrapping...then I just start wrapping Decore again...sure, there’s a bit of a gap in that portion from the stop and start, but that just gives your coils character :)

You're not drinking water are you?! You realize that stuff is found in antifreeze!?!

Yeah lol. I only watched one video before doing that with the sound off. I'll watch the ones you sent me before I try again.

Glad to see that you have a technique that works for you...and my arm doesn’t get tired doing Aliens because I have a technique that works for me as well, using shorter cores and elbow on my knee to use as a pivot point...allows me to crank Aliens out by the dozens and without having to use “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead” type speeds with my drill. For some folks, especially without a perfected technique, not sure if throttling up on the speed will do much besides chew up wire faster, but hey...we learn from our mistakes, so, if someone wants to go balls out on their drill speed to see if it works for them or not, that’s something they learn one way or another by trying out, so, something positive can come out of it either way. Different strokes for different folks and all that jazz...

You're not drinking water are you?! You realize that stuff is found in antifreeze!?!
Well I don't mean go full speed on the drill immediately from the start of course, but... go slow and watch it catch, and, after you see that it's going fine, just speed it up and let 'er rip. At high speed the decore tends to somewhat spiral toward the cores, kind of like this:

How long do you guys make your cores for one build? Mine's about 2 feet and it's killing my arm and hand lol.
i set the coil up in wire wizard and use the length from the blue results box on the right, double it (or multiply it by the number of coils you want) and add and inch or two for the drill chuck/swivels. i never throw away more than half an inch of wire after all is said and done.

48g today it was 1000' and I don't even think that'll last that long lol
yeah i imagine 48 would go really fast...the smallest i bought so far is 42 and it takes so much to cover the same space as something like 36. its painful how long it takes too fawk...

My first bulk building session
great work man. thats hard for me. i usually only make the pair of coils i need at the moment. the only times i do bulk like that are when i get a bunch of vape mail and i want to try it all at once...but sometimes theres no time and i have unopened vape mail sitting on my table for ages (my record is just over three months before i opened and built a tank for the first time)...

Complete failure hahaha.
looks pretty close to me..you were just a little ahead on your lead angle. you didnt over stretch at least...thats usually the mistake people make on their first try. is that two cores, or did it triangle on you and i cant see the third one in the back?

For some folks, especially without a perfected technique, not sure if throttling up on the speed will do much besides chew up wire faster, but hey...we learn from our mistakes
there are a lot of techniques i cant do slowly. i tried to be careful on a lot of my 'first attempts' at stuff when i was starting out. it usually worked, but there are 'edge cases'... i had a lot of trouble doing an sfc. after a few fails, i was half way through another build that wasnt working and i just said 'fuckitall lets git this over with, im done', hammered on my drill and completed the rest of the build perfectly. never tried to do them slow again. same with ssfc and , staggs and groove fuse...balls out on the drill and figure out your angle asap. it gets easier with experience. the first few times you might lose an inch or two at the start of your wire. after you have made a dozen pairs of something, youll probably be holding the proper angle before you even pull the trigger...just slowly squeeze it all the way in. as its accelerating you check your angle. if its good, you go

nice work @Darthvaper510 ...have you tried them yet?

I experimented a bit with the SS wire I got. I fucked up my first framed clapton. The wire goes all wonky on me before I can wrap it, so it came out as a worthless hunk of metal. So I spun a few fused claptons instead. This is 40awg SS wrapped around 26awg SS using the swivel method. I tried freehanding with this wire, but it snaps midway. Gotta learn to ease up on the throttle. I'm getting tasty vapes and nice clouds from these. Simply put, this feels like a whole different level compared to Kanthal.

IMG_0026.JPG

Can't really get any better pics than this until I learn how to use my cell camera. My dog chewed up the cord for my Nikkon. :(

That's the problem I had when I tried making my framed clapton. Got any tips on how to prevent that?

First fused clapton. Damn swivels locked or something for a split second and twisted. So now I have a twisted fused clapton. Fuck it. Works for me.itll take some getting used to the hand being just right on the wrap wire though. Just behind enough it looks like.going to try free hand like @ Screwball next just to see if that works better for me. I did get enough for a coil though.

One more for today. This is stressful at the moment
i get a bit of stress from building too. sometimes it is kinda calming and meditative, but most of the time i am worrying about something, overthinking something, overcalculating...
Gotta figure out the right pressure on the drill. Keeps twisting on me
for two cores it doesnt matter at all if there are twists...and if you are using three or more, the only thing that matters is that they stay parallel. you can easily untwist it on your coil jig when you are wrapping coils.

great work by the way. the wraps on your first one look very clean. you had a great day of building man. cant wait to see more

That's only 2 cores.
what gauge did you use for your decore? for three cores, you want to use the same gauge (3x26 uses 26 decore). two cores you go smaller (2x26 uses 28 decore) and for four you go up (4x26 uses 24 decore). looks like you are about half a step away form a perfect set imo

In that case, I was way off lol. The decore was 36g. Pretty sure the cores were 26g.

Thank. I definitely over analyze it. Between watching wraps and quick glance at the swivels. Second run did go easier so that's good. Was able to make 3 coils out of all of it so I'm happy. Of course I have 30 aliens from @ScReWbALL to use up too. That'll take a year I'd say. Ha ha

36 is the right gauge for wraps...decore is the wrap you slide off a single core clapton and stretch out to make alien wraps. if you are making 2x26, you want to make your decore on a piece of 28 so the math all works out.

yeah youll learn what to watch and what to ignore after a few builds. the only thing i look at now is the angle of my wrap wire, and if i am working with multiple parallel cores i try to keep an eye on them to make sure they dont squeeze together (if you catch it in time you can flatten them out without having to unwrap your wrap wire and make a mess to recover it).

You’d think that many coils would last you a long time, but it depends on if you get hooked on building. I got addicted once I started getting consistently good coils and completely abandoned re-wicking for I’d say a good year-I would replace all of the coils instead...a coil of mine was lucky to stay in the RDA longer than 3 days, lol, that’s why I got into the habit of doing these marathon build sessions making mass quantities of coils. I’ve calmed that down a bit, though, and now I’m back to cleaning and rewicking coils, but still popping in new coils well before the old ones are really done.

Made a load of decores for attempting alien staggs last night after watching Raymo's Instagram video. Not the prettiest but this is only the 1st try, still got about 6 more attempts left :) also I need to get one of them pasta rollers to flatten it out properly

nice work man. i have tried and failed that build two or three times now, maybe an inch of good wire in total. got any tips? is there anywhere that rays ig videos are archived? i have seen him mention that he does regular live build streams, but my chances of seeing them are pretty much zero.

Oops! Yeah I just used my cores for that. Thanks for the info!

Cheers la. I didn't catch it as it was aired it was about 3 hours afterwards, it just showed up at the top of the Instagram app like. I'm not entirely up to scratch with Instagram so can't explain myself properly :/ It was a fairly short video compared n.devine's video I'd watched the night before, 15 mins or so versus 2 hours lol. The 2nd and 3rd cores I tried to do were absolute balls ups so I haven't tried fusing again yet but on the first one it very much felt like a staggered Clapton. Not the exact same as the wire moves back and forth but it seemed like the well spaced parts of the alien core just fed the fuse wire into place. If you understand what I mean, not sure I do hahaha

haha just yesterday i was saying that there are some builds i can only do fast...and it sounds like i need to take my own damn advice for this. this build requires so much prep work that i always try to do it slow and careful so i dont waste all that time and wire...when you say 'it very much felt like a staggered clapton' you make me think i should try it much faster because i can only do sfc at full speed, or i just end up watching it fuck up in slow motion, which is whats happened every time i have tried alien staggs...

thanks for the tip, ill try this again very soon

I think the most important part is the spacing in the core. I keep ballsing it up and not getting a consistent gap. Best piece I got was long enough for a 5mm single coil. Got better wraps on a part of an earlier piece though. Just need to work at it a bit more. Span up a load more decore to go at it again tomorrow :)

Nice one dude, could stand to be cleaner, but I appreciate it. That 1st pic which was actually the last one I did today is a bit naff, the 2nd pic was the stick before. Like the spacing on that one, it's possible my spacing was too tight there and rolling the wire out gave it that clean finish. Will find out tomorrow, or later as it inadvertently is lol. Done up a fair few more decores this time so I don't have to spin more up in the middle of my attempts.

I can't tell for certain yet like but it seems like the only real challenge is getting the angle that you lead the alien with down to a T and being able to keep it exactly there for the length of the stick. I didn't even use any sliders or clips or anything to keep the frames from collapsing. I just used the same method as Raymo, except for the chuck of the drill whereas he was using him new gadget. Need to get me a set too lol.

Tried bunches of different tricks to get a consistent clapton, all of them didnt work as well as just pinching the core though. So, my decores were all inconsistent.

I "made a lot of scrap wire" today hehe

nice work @Pegleg Meg

got a notice on the door today that i missed a package delivery while i was at work...pretty sure its my deathtrap and elite gen II rdas :xD:gotta wait till tomorrow afternoon to go grab them. im going to run the deathtrap on my hog v3...anyone have a cool build to try out at around .3 (aside from just running my normal dual coil setup in the form of a parallel single coil)?

i have a 5×30×40 alien 3mm 6 wrap in my deathtrap ohm .327 i think
im vaping a pair of those in ss316 right now in 'the tank' on a 26650 tube, they are a good choice  im more excited than usual for this vape mail. i just hope it turns out to be the package i think it is. theres a chance it could be my room mates kitten hoodie or something absurd like that.

Those are smokin Aliens Drake! If I could make Aliens like that, I'd be set.

I made these staged heaters at the vape shop earlier. They had a build contest going on and I got 2nd place, mostly because I slightly borked the one in back and didn't realize it till I had them battened down already, dammit! It was pretty sweet watching these glow tho, LOL! These were made with pure NiChrome. I freehanded the wrap on it.

Oh well, at least I got $150 out of the deal. Not bad for sitting on my ass for 20 minutes, LOL!

They aren’t all that pretty or fancy, but when I was still using my Series boxes, I enjoyed running Parallel Clapton’s. I want to say they were 28/36 single cores, 8 wraps (16 total, technically) around a 3mm...one of the few builds I use Kanthal for to bump the Ohms up to be safer on a series setup

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one that enjoys watching staged builds glow! I always get weird looks when I say that, but I’ll be damned if they aren’t mesmerizing, lol.

Is it just the lighting in the picture or did you get some nice blue coloring on those? Either way, they still are awesome for someone that just started building Aliens.
And I don’t know if it really works for making your Decore more consistent (it might just be because I’m in the habit of doing it), but when I’m claptoning the initial wire I’m going to use for Decore, I always leave some exposed core at the end and before removing the wire from the drill, I grip that bit of exposed core with pliers and use my other hand and pinch where the claptoning ends with my thumb and index finger and slide the pinched fingers back to the chuck of the drill a few times. Then I take the wire out of the chuck and take the core out.

Edit: I just noticed you mentioned “Pinching the core” and I’m not sure if that’s what i just described because I wasn’t aware it was called that, if that’s the case...if it is, my apologies for being a bit redundant, lol.

i have done a similar build to that, but i groove fused the claptons together with 42. it was nice but i am too lazy to do it (you have to clapton 3x as much total wire length compared to regular fused claptons with the same specs) lol  maybe ill try to figure out how to combine you and @Drake m suggestions into a big old monster coil...

i gotta ask you folks to help me out...please sacrifice some wire to your drills, and ask your building gods to help me get my vape mail tomorrow instead of a hoodie with kittens on it :grumpy:

haha thanks guys. unfortunately my room mate didnt get her kitten hoodie today, but they sent me the wrong color deathtrap :grumpy: i ordered a black elite gen II and a silver deathtrap and they sent them both in black. sent a msg to them asking about it...wont build it until i hear back from them. they seem like a cool shop. they gave me a free 'ultimate ohm reader' by usaohmmeters when i got my four horsemen hog from them in october...

so for now i am running a pair of old staples i had on my desk in the elite while i try to get a moment to build some aliens or something. seems like a great vape so far, but i have to admit, i was way more excited for the deathtrap. hopefully we can get it sorted out soon.

i really appreciate all the prayer and sacrifice you guys made for me
