Congrats mate looking good! So is it gonna be a build you keep trying?
yeah i would like to get these perfect so i can try a few variants and otherwise use the technique for my own evil purposes. hopefully i can keep doing it now that i have done it...
Nice work dude. It is a bitch n a half getting that spacing clean isn't it lol
yeah its interesting...i decided to go pretty fast on the drill this time because of what you said about the similarities to doing a sfc and it seemed to help...i had to stop and pinch my cores/frames flat a few times on the second pass, so i think my prep needs a bit of work still.

nice build and color shot @Wtmke1

The way Raymo put it was "alien with confidence". It definitely helps to not over concentrate, feels like everything goes wrong when you're going slow. It's definitely tighter than my first attempts, congratulations la.

yeah that says it pretty well. when i started out i was ready to go fast like i was doing an sfc, but i did a couple wraps slowly to see my spacing/angle, then i just went for it. its easier to do it fast because you are finished sooner, which leaves less time to fuck everything up...but to do that you have to be pretty confident that its going to work, or not care if it doesnt. thats where my problem is, i do care if it doesnt work and i know there is often something i can do to correct it if i catch the problem in time...but going slow causes as many problems as it avoids on some builds.

Yeah it is much easier to go fast but I find keeping the angle perfect harder at faster speeds, probably why I have little gaps still. Practice, practice, practice though :) we'll get there

yeah i hope i can hit this build now so i can keep practicing it. hand spacing alien wrap is technically no different than doing claptons. you just hold the spool at the correct angle and follow along at the correct speed (most of us learned to do that for claptons within minutes)...its just a trick our minds play on us making us think its harder than that.

tried to use some leftover decores from last night to do another alien stagg. tried staple core this time but i barely got a coil worth into my hadaly clone, and my wraps are worse than before

Damn staple stag is going for it mate haha bet that’s harder than round cores!

it wasnt much different tbh...my staple stacks are pretty sturdy, compared to 3x28 they might be a little sturdier because they cant triangle. was a waste of ribbon wire though lol...ill wait until i get the spacing/wraps right on the alien stagg before i try to step it up. whats the proper name for this build anyway? alien stapled stagg? stapled staggered aliens? staggered alien framed staples?

I'm pretty sure it would be an alien staggerton la, as the core in staggertons are ribbon with round frames. Seems right to me anyway.

One of the most important parts or alien technique learning to know when your in that groove knowing when to let it rip and staying in that groove. It's easy to fall off but I'm to the point that I'm now solely using the alien technique.

I'm not embarrassed one bit. I'll look back and cherish these moments. I've learned to take a deep breath and just start over. I'm now getting one or two usable coils every run. They might not be pretty just yet but I'm getting closer and closer.

Thank you screwball. I learned the wrong way to Clapton. I'd just pinch and rip, and I suggest never doing that. I've reason is it will handycap your ability to Clapton, your not able to see your progress, I called it the "rip and pray"method. It's garbage. That young kid on YouTube teaches people the crappiest way to Clapton. I can now do it, but it's just the wrong way to Clapton.

Learning to Clapton once again the right way has helped my fused Clapton technique and now have that mirror look and know my fused are gone correctly. I thought I could alien like I did fused Clapton. I can fuse Clapton by have and probably rip out 12ft sections, you can't do that with alien free hand.

Sorry for long post. Screw ball you tought me the right way to alien. One or two coil Max is perfect

Thanks, you got me smiling. Coming from you that means a shit load. I'll tell you, what has really got me is using mech/unregulated mods and my own coils.

Also, realizing there's a right and wrong way to learn coiling. I started off doing some pretty stupid things and began teaching myself the wrong way. You want to see your work, not pinch squeeze and pray a good fused Clapton comes out. There's more math, and science to our skill.

I did make some good fused Claptons pinching, and let er rip, but now that I've got a good technique down it's made all the difference.

I'm very happy and fortunate to have learned to use no swivels. That will make using swivels a breeze.

Glad it put a smile on your face but I'm no pro @Zohmbiebuilds, I look up to these guys as much as you do for building, inspiration and reassurance. It's a long road but got some great company to give you the boost you need to smash on. Really, well done la, keep on spinning and hope you keep your mind occupied.

Hey guys throwing a pair of my fused Claptons in my new kylin. The second wrap from the bottom on the right coil is heating up before the others. Why is this? Been playing with it for a good while.

It’s probably a hot spot mate just need to work them out on all fresh coils they should always glow evenly centre out with no little single glow spots

Gentry Strum the coils between dry burning with the ceramic tweezers

Pinch them when gently heating with ceramic tweezers

Check mounting screws are in tight on all 4 sides and coils sit at the same height

You might need to insert the coil tool and gently pull them between dry firing (helps settle the wraps together)

I ended up just replacing it. I played with that coil forever.

Sometimes I'll lightly pry each wrap away from each other with a small screwdriver and then strum them for particularly finicky hot spots. Can do the prying from inside as well if you're trying to maintain the finish on coloured coils

Have you tried using some ceramic tweezers and and grabbing the first wrap and tugging it a bit to spread the coils a little bit, heating the coils a sec and then squeezing them back together while firing? Sometimes that works when mine are doing that. Or I’ll intentionally pinch too hard on one side of the coil acting up basically creating a long “hot spot” that heats up fast between the two spots I’m squeezing on the coil and then strumming the hot spot...it kind of fuses the wraps together and after strumming it they will be a bit more in synch. Only other thing I try to do is instead of just retightening the leads, loosen the leads and then tighten them back down and insert the screwdriver into the coil and wiggle it/roll it around (while not firing). And I’m sure you already know, but just in case, after you insert a screwdriver through the coil it will appear to heat up a lot slower than the other coil, but it’s just because when manipulating a coil like that it cools off faster than the coil you aren’t messing with, so, it only looks like they aren’t firing in synch, but will be better when they both get back to the same temp.

And then I put too much cotton in there. At least it's not leaking lol. I think I should be able to flip it over, take the base off and save the juice.

Edit: still too much cotton :(

a couple other things to try if its really not willing to glow properly:
-remove the clapton wrap off the parts of the legs that go into the post holes
-remove the coils and either rotate them 180, or switch sides/posts (just put them back with the legs in different holes)
-glow them way hotter than normal for a few seconds

i dont know why it happens, but sometimes a coil will just go bad. my room mate is notorious for doing it. she will re-wick a few times, and suddenly one of her coils is fucked. the things i listed above have been able to fix it a few times, but there have been just as many that i had to replace because they wouldnt work properly any more.

nice build and photos btw

Hey what size we're your FC and what did they ohm out at? I'm asking because mine with 2x26x36ss come out to like .13ish,, just wondering what yours come out to. I've got a few 28core fc as well but it's not much higher. I just don't like running that low with a single battery squonk. Could add extra wraps but only so much room is single coil rdas.

Son of a... there is no room for cotton in those wick slots. 3rd time rewicking and still too much. After years of building, I officially suck at it now.

The kylin is a PiTA the wick right mate... the best guide I’ve seen for it was vaping with Vic skip ahead to roughly 12 -14 minutes on his review, I followed that and helped a lot

In all honesty I run as low as .1, though I try to get it up a bit to around .14 anything higher than that and it's not as enjoyable.

I pulse fire anything that low and never ever chain vape. I've never had a problem.

If your using any decent battery .13 pulsed is probably ok.

I'm willing to risk it, I know the signs of thermal runaway, venting, etc. I also take the batteries out so as to never chance a longer on time than about 3 seconds Max

After wicking the coils. try trimming the wicks at an angle.
Here's a crappy video I did for the Petri RTA a while back, but it shows what I mean about taper trimming the wicks. It's right around the 4:30 mark.
