Nice looking coils there! Got some color on them too. Are those staple coils?

I’m afraid I’m going to fall into the one-trick pony category
its good to stop and practice for a bit too. i was doing aliens before i could clapton 100%, so most of my alien mistakes were a lack of clapton skill. doing lots of alien builds got my clapton up to speed, which let me hit 42 gauge claptons, which let me move to 30/40 aliens...etc etc etc i stuck at stagger fuse too, but i imagine that learning alien staggs is going to help those skills out when i go back and try another regular stagg build.
only fair to pass it forward and hook someone up
being able to inspect and vape on a pair of aliens can be the info someone needs to be able to hit them on their own too....can learn a lot just seeing/holding good craftsmanship.
she’s like the Rainwoman of Coils or something
i second that
Playing at some country bar tomorrow night
good luck man
I think you've got to be a bit "rainman"ish to get into coil building, especially with some of these exotic coils lol
yeah that too. its like a cross between a superpower and some kind of metal illness

@Pegleg Meg did you manage to hit the 3x3/sixpack stack build?

if you ever start a company selling coils, it should be called that. the t-shirt/branding package is already being drafted in my mind....in another life, i would have had that on your desk by morning
I wish dude. I look at some of the builders around and think what's the point haha, I can spin out a good framed staple or alien and what not but these more complex builds like skip fusing and double framing, sandwiching, some heavy builds out. It's mental, it's now more like artwork.... And I was never really good at art :/ haha. Wouldn't mind seeing a design though, not sure what is available over here so could possibly be a new opportunity

normal people who dont suffer from this condition are usually pretty stoked just to try aliens or high gauge fused claptons. i often consider trying to approach a local shop about bringing in some various coils to sell, or even just put in the shelf and see if anyone notices. the community here sucks right now (we had one good shop and they closed last summer), so it could either be great (i would have the coil market to myself), or it could suck (no one gives a fuck about hand made coils)...

You're quite right like, I remember how thrilled I was to have vaped my own alien coil so for those who can't wrap them or don't have the time it's an easy way to get the build you want. this needs much thought. I've been told to do just that by a friend, just take my work into a few shops and see what they say about it. Should try it out yourself dude, you've got some lovely clean work that people would enjoy :)

yeah i have been told the same almost every time i show someone my build. i give a lot of coils away and most people are pretty happy to get them. i gave my favorite vape shop guy some alien framed staples for xmas, and more recently i gave him one of the stapled helix coils i made. he thinks people would buy aliens and fused claptons all day, at the right price. i dunno if that price is the same as the one thats right for me to make them...it would be nice to pay for the fuckin wire by selling some coils tho...i just set up my next order and its going to be over $150usd

That's actually how I got into coil building, building them for friends lol. I suppose we'll only find out if we test the water whether they're sellers or not. I know what ya mean about paying for the wire, oooff that's a heavy order hahaha I usually only order a few select spools at a time. Need more 36g after messing around with the alien staggs though, pissed through my whole supply haha got loads of decore to just pick from though so it's not all bad

I had the same idea pop in my head a good while back, but then I had a small incident that’s made me pretty gun shy about people using my coils without being able to talk with them first.
A guy I work with vapes and builds only basic round wire coils, but he saw my Aliens one day and asked to try some, so I took him a few sets. Next time I worked with him he tells me that the coils suck and everything tastes burnt and parts of the coil were burning his cotton when other parts weren’t getting hot enough to evaporate the juice. Turns out he had never used a fused core coil before and knew nothing about working out hot spots or pinching and strumming and all that good stuff, so, he was just trying to pop them in, wick, juice and go.
Luckily I was able to show him about that stuff and he loves them now, but then I thought how easy it would be for word of mouth to destroy a builders rep just from someone not familiar with how to properly install and care for them...and heaven forbid some idiot misuse them in some way and something bad happens because of it. So, now I try to make sure anyone I give my coils to understands the breaking in process and how to safely use and maintain them. A way around that would be a small instruction manual or link to sites/vids on the topic, but without actually talking with that person, there’s no way of knowing they’d even look at that type of material.
Either way, it was enough that I can’t get myself to try to offer a service like that to a shop, because I got lucky that I was able to correct the guy I work with...I can just imagine what damage someone could do by talking shit about your coils, at a Vape shop no less.
Another idea that I did have, though, is seeing if I could get a shop owner to allow the teaching of some type of coil building classes. Maybe on a Saturday for one or two hours go in and set up and teach folks basic coil building skills and have workshop classes for more advanced stuff. Not necessarily for money...or if so, free basic lessons and then charge to go to the advanced workshops and such. But, I don’t even know if something like that would take off or if anyone would even respond to such a thing, so, I just keep mulling it around in my mind. Maybe I’ll try to organize some thoughts on it and give it a whirl...worst thing they can do is say no.

Edit: Of course, I’m just an extreme worrier with an anxiety disorder and a mild form of literal OCD that involves “runaway thoughts” where I can not only see any negative outcome of the most simple of things, but also convince myself that they will happen, lol. So, don’t mind me...my name on here isn’t necessarily just because I thought it up and liked it

i used to be able to grab some 36 from a local shop, but thats the one that shut down last summer. i ended up ordering a bundle pack, and now i feel like i always need to have everything available. everything kind of runs out at the same time though when you do that...so now i am looking at my wrap gauges (n80 and 316 from 34 to 42) and i can see spool through the wire on all of them, im totally out of n80 and ss core wire, and i have never bought .2 ribbon in any metal, so i have a lot to restock on lol....

made me pretty gun shy about people using my coils without being able to talk with them first.

that was one of my main concerns too. i was thinking packaging would have to be very thorough and clear. maybe some qr codes that link to instructional videos etc...was thinking of labeling the coils with a recommended use scenario (like tubes, parallel, series) and a recommended power level, or a little scale like the premade coil heads (35-55watts or whatever) to try to keep ppl out of trouble...but no one reads that shit or listens to instructions. i guess another important part of the packaging would be a disclaimer....hadnt thought of that till just now lol 'dont fuck around with these if you dont know what youre doing. if you dont know if you know what youre doing, you dont know what youre doing, dont fuck with these'.

teaching of some type of coil building classes

i had this conversation with my room mate a couple days ago too. we were lamenting the lack of community here. we have a couple good shops, but the one that shut down last summer had a very cool guy running it, who ran a local fb group and constantly tried to build it up. when they left, the fb group was crickets and tumbleweed and theres no shop where people congregate and interact any more. i was thinking of offering a coil building class to see if i can spark up a little community kind of like this thread, but irl...but you would have to bring drills and wire for everyone, and find a location. if it was a shop, it would prolly have to be after hours, which would require some kind of staff to be present and all that stuff that would make it hard for a shop to want to go along with. it never hurts to ask, but it looks like a tough sell from my perspective.

well i only had a nine hour shift today, my hands are barely sore, tomorrow off.... i wonder if i have it in me to take a crack at a @Tom_Forde half-dub...

I thought of that idea as well, but immediately had to dismiss it because that would make me a horrible hypocrite. I’ve told far too many people my idea on helping with overpopulation was to remove all warning labels from all products and let Darwinism take it from there...if you’re too stupid to know that you probably shouldn’t use a hairdryer while taking a bath, you deserve to die and hopefully it happens before you have the chance to procreate. That way you not only take care of some of the overpopulation...you’re removing the less intelligent folks from the gene pool. Less people to worry about clothing and feeding and the overall IQ of the remaining population gets bumped up a few points...win-win. So, needless to say disclaimers or hazard stickers would mean I’m going back on that, which I refuse to do, lol.

For the love of all that’s holy...that build is insane. I got dizzy just by looking at that son of a bitch. Why would you want to do that to yourself? I would go even crazier than I already am just trying to wrap my head around how to start something like that! But that’s nothing new...I’ve always considered myself a xerox machine...I can usually copy something pretty well, but not as good as the original, but have absolutely no way of coming up with something original on my own.

i think a touch of masochism is one of the symptoms of obsessive coiling disorder. its a hobby that makes me mad, costs me time and money, i am cut stabbed and burned regularly....and its my favorite :inlove:

She is a cruel mistress at times, isn’t she? It took a bit of accidental self-mutilation to teach me to control my temper when it came to building.
One of my first attempts at a Staggered Fused Clapton ended up pretty bloody and now I’m still missing some skin in my hand. Was at the last part...had the two core wires with spaced claptons perfectly aligned in the chuck of the drill and was starting to wrap the wire to fuse them together, but couldn’t catch a groove to save my life and it went to hell and started twisting on me. I wasn’t using a swivel setup and I have a habit of chucking shit across the room when pissed, so, I reach over and turn the chuck to loosen the wires and proceed to wrap my fist around the wires to pull out of the chuck and throw...except i didn’t turn the chuck enough to loosen the wires completely. I grab the wires in a fist and yank straight out away from the chuck...wires stayed in place in the drill while my closed fist gripping those wires slides all the way to the end, shredding the inside of my hand.
Still not sure which was worse...the pain and disfigurement or the fact that I was unable to build over the next couple of weeks while it healed. But sure enough...as soon as I could start claptoning again, I was right back at it.

That Tom Ford fellow's avatar has a ball gag, yep the masochism is strong with that one, too

I sure have gotten poked a lot, and sliced pretty good by 22 gauge kanthal I used to attach my swivels to a table clamp, put tape all around it right after that :D and burned yesterday messing with hot glue :\

@mach1ne I accidentally turned 6 in a row cores into a 6-pack shape, so I got a good idea of how to do that now, but not sure I want to because it won't untwist as easily while wrapping a coil...and I have no nylon pliers, just metal toothless and they still mangle high gauge wire

...I will try it again sometime though, and on purpose haha

I get a refund from my school grant early next month, so I'll probably be ordering quite a bit of wrap wire :D and spool tamers, and nylon pliers, and and...lol!

i hadnt noticed that before somehow...just more evidence that at least some of us are a little different lol (*whispers* one of us...)

nice. proof of concept is valuable in its own way (even by accident). before i got my nylon pliers i was wrapping a pair of regular pliers with masking tape. that works, but its easy to wreck the tape and make a mess of everything. a layer of electricians tape over that made it last longer, and a bit of extra padding. its no replacement for nylon pliers (they are actually pretty amazing for building), but it works in a pinch (oooh another bad pun)...

one thing that helps me a lot is the chucky from usaohmmeters. i have the swivel clamp thing too, but i only use it on really wide builds. the drill chuck side is enough for most builds on its own. not sure if i would recommend that company though, i like them less and less the more i have tried to deal with them, and the more i hear about how they do business. @TooCruel and @raymo2u were both working on better alternatives (imo)...i just dont know how to purchase their options, or if they are actually out of testing/available for sale yet...

Chucky looks interesting, trying to find some pictures of the inside... I tried hot clue in the chuck yesterday, it had promise. I got the cores nice and hot on the end and just stabbed them into the bit of cold hot glue, then put the glue into the chuck, chucky seems a bit simpler though

a spinLT or SWVL is another good thing to grab, but im not sure if its as important as a chuck clamp of some kind. if i put my regular walmart swivel chain on my spinLT, the spinLT doesnt spin...meaning the fishing swivels has less friction and probably do just as good of a job.

Raymo's pieces have already been made and bought lol, he's doing another batch though so need to get me a set of them. Made out of titanium as well so won't get chewed up by the wires
Edit. Raymo has a shop on etsy, called buildersboutique, follow him on there as that's where the clamps are being sold :)

I have broken my favorite fucking thermos because of my shit head attitude when coiling and wrapping. I still have my moments, but try to remember that we all need to practice, and it's not about speed of learned builds, it's about mastering one concept and using bits and pieces from other concepts to master others.

Some days I can barely alien, tho I got it down, I'm kind of pissed I can't build right not, I was moved to a different facility and they hardly feed, only allow 7 outfits (I am a girl when it comes to clothes) and took everything that could be considered a weapon so I've had to make due with the aliens and fused Claptons I've had. I ran out of wrapping wire and need to put an order in but bus money is slowly killing my spirit.

I love y'all

Rebuilt my Revolver Reloaded 2...since it’s an RDTA and you never see the coils anyway, I always use coils from my blemish pile, but figured I’d still throw a little color on them for some practice. Pulled a wrap out and spaced the coils.

Well, shit...looks like I’m in the market for a new RDTA. I was getting flickers of light inside the tank section when I hit the fire button. Took it apart and noticed the central tube section carrying the current from the battery to the coils was bent a bit...straightened it out and was screwing the the top section back on and the threads felt a bit crunchy and then *snap* and it just freely starting spinning without locking down...damn pin running through the middle snapped off. Poor mod, she was a workhorse and my go to when not feeling like dripping. Picked it up mid June for $15...guess I gotta pick another up now, though I am open to suggestions if anyone knows of a good equivalent around the same price point as this
80c6bd7817a7d42a554c040d7a1624a1.jpg

I’ve heard about the Mad Dog Mech Kit that’s very similar, but it looks a bit feminine for my taste (not to mention the only half way reputable site that I’ve found a clone of it on has a minimum quantity of 10 to order). Not opposed to getting just an RDTA rather than an RDTA/Mod combo, as long as it can handle sitting on a tube and be flush and I can somewhat match up the colors.

I've got the mad dog RDA and I loved it until I got my pyro, though I do still want to try out the RDTA version just to know how it improved the leaking juice problem it seemed to have. Only reason I really want to try the RDTA is because the post hole setup on the RDA was one of the best I've used for a 2 post 2 port system, or any posted RDA for that matter. The pyro is a lovely RDTA too, plenty of room for 4mm dual coil setup or a fat single coil

These are exactly what I’ve been after!! I’ll have to keep an eye out

Are these primarily for alien builds? How about ribbon stacks where we normally fold the ribbon in half around the swivel?

@b_d_builders what swivel thingy is that mate?

Anyone know where I can find a build tutorial for the Alien Stag? Just dropped my gf off at the airport and I plan on taking advantage of having the place to myself and not having to be considerate of disturbing anyone with the drill for the next few days...figure that’s the best circumstances to try out new builds, but, I can’t seem to find a build tutorial on that particular build anywhere.

Haven't run a staple build in her yet but I presume I will not be using the smaller of the two vices. I will probably still run the loop method however using the nice wide Chuck vice should make things easier.

If I'm not mistaken raymo "floates" his ribbon stacks between his frames and uses ribbon sliders. I for the life of me can never mange to use that method. :(

I like that idea, but it'll never work in America thanks to the fact that here, you can sue anyone for pretty much anything. In order for Darwinism to work, you have to eliminate the peoples' "right" to sue. (Not really a "right" per se, but I can't think of a better term for it. Gimme a break, it's early Sunday morning, LOL!)

Vandyvape Pyro, or the clone on Fasttech. I got the clone, has a super long 510 screw, fine for pinless 510 mechs, solid machining too, very nice vape. Short and stumpy and small tank (4mL) though, but pretty easy to refill.

I have both. Got 4mm coils on the RDA. Only had the RDTA for a day until I dropped it and broke the glass then while replacing the glass I cracked that one but I went through a couple of tanks of juice before that happened and had no leaks. I haven't been vaping long and only RTDA I've had but I like it and the ability to hold 7ml . I ordered 5pk of replacement glass but I wish you could get in ultem like the Pyro instead of glass. I got RTDA off vapordna for $17 I think they are on clearance
