Can my nic base be the cause of this?

Welcome!

Unlikely the nic.

My primary speculation is perhaps you may have forgot to... "Be especially sure to shake Orange and Mandarin right before you measure them!" (from OP)

Yes...both.

You may wish to vape a little bit of your base without any flavoring. If that's the problem, in order for it to mask the flavoring...it would have to taste very nasty. (Chemical, metallic, blood or fish like ...perhaps)

Questions:

How are you measuring the flavors? (Scale? Drops?)
Are you using a program? Which? (like ejuicemeup for example)

i use percentages since i dont have the attention span to count several dozens of drops :) So in this recipes case i used 3ml of combined flavours to make a 50ml batch.
I use Vape: e-liquid calculator

if the nic base is the problem i would have had this with my previous diy liquids, right?

Peace!

Not necessarily.

You did not measure with drops. Okay .. What did you use to measure the flavors? I ask as not adding the correct amount of flavoring would be my next best guess why you find the resulting juice bland.

i use medical syringes of 1, 5 and 10 ml according to my needs. for flavours usually the 1ml ones.
im pretty certain that my flavour percentage is correct since i measured out 3ml of flavour for a 50ml batch.
i also ordered these exact flavours from the "flavour art" brand from www.flavourart.co.uk so i didnt substitute anything with different brands.
thats why im so baffled by my failed concoction since everyone seems to absolutely love this vape. :(

Peace.

You are welcome!

Before getting new stuff, you may wish to take the advice here:

http://vapingunderground.com/threads/finding-the-problem-when-your-diy-tastes-bad.88262/

In regards to which brands to purchase, well heck, there's a ton of information (and opinions) on which in the General DIY area and elsewhere. A bunch depends on your budget and the volume amount you are looking for.

Hi guys.
Im having some troubles with the tic tac juices.
i made both flavours seperately with the recommended 6% flavour at roughly 60/40 vg pg.
this tasted very bland at all steeping stages (right after mixing, after a couple of days, and 3 weeks)
this really baffled me seeing all these super enthousiast comments so i made a new batch with 12% and it still tastes very weak and has an unbearable throat hit with the same 60/40 vg pg mix. (throat hit was already stronger then it should be at 6% for a 60/40 mix)
Can my nic base be the cause of this? I've made several other juices with these same bottles without problems but then again im rather new in the diy world so im possibly doing something wrong.
I've allso tried it in different tanks at different wattages including melo III mini, heracles plus and a Smok baby beast.

all ideas are welcome cus i cant wait to vape proper tic tacs!

Peace!

Wow can't taste this it's pretty powerful for me...

Few questions for you

1. How long was it since giving up the cigs?
2. If recently how many smokes many a day?
3. What brands have you bought of everything including VG/ PG / (silly question but flavour) / nic
4. What % nic are you using?
5. How big was your batch 10ml sample for instance?
6. What bottles are you using for putting liquid in

As Ron said go to HICs testing method in that link as well

I've not given up analogs entirely, i just vape at home for now, when out with friends or at work i still take my pack of tobacco with me.
The VG & PG are probably something my shop rebranded but the bottle says "premium insane base" if that means anything to you.
The nicotine is NicSelect 50/50 48mg & my flavours are mostly Flavour Art, Perfumers Apprentice, The Flavour Apprentice, and some cheapo rebrands.
But everything i used in this tic tac recipe i ordered from Flavour Art.
I'm mixing 6mg/ml nicotine
My "sample" batches were 50ml each (inner & outer) a bit much in retrospect but with all these amazing comments and my love for orange flavored vape i didn't think it would turn out the way it did.
The bottles i'm using are HDPE plastic from the local vape shop with a childproof cap.

I will mix up a batch of my vg/pg/nic later this week to see if anything tastes faulty there and then continue to follow HIC's guide on bad tasting vapes.

Peace.

Smoking will mute your taste senses, but you have doubled the recipe which means you should be tasting something even if a little...also whilst smoking as well you may notice more irritation on the throat

Sorry forgot to ask is nic suspended in PG base that 50/50 sounds like a hybrid?

Hmm well everything else doesn't seem off though... there are varying degrees of quality for nic base/ VG/ PG (I personally get my PG/VG bases from FA as well very good quality but not cheap) gonna be ordering nic from a different supplier this time so can't provide advice on that but when vaping it shouldn't taste peppery on the tongue ...that's the sign of crappy nic base

what ml did you use of everything in the recipe can double check that for you :)

Also I find I can't tolerate to much PG in my recipe but this can mute flavour. As you say to much PG makes it harsh on the throat for me I aim for 75% VG but this is all trial and error for your tastes, some peeps like much higher PG or VG percentages

Also get some small 10ml bottles so you don't waste all the stuff when testing not cheap replacing it all when your not happy with the mix ;)

Hi Zaz ... following on Using 60/40 split and nic at 6% (assuming that nic is entirely suspended in PG) I calculate the following for a 50ml recipe (all ml)

Orange 1.50,
mad fruit 0.63,
mandarin 0.50,
vanilla classic 0.13,
peppermint 0.13,
anise 0.13,
pg 10.75,
vg 30.0,
nicotine 6.25

If your nic base is 50/50 VG/PG that will change things

Yup those are the exact numbers showing up in my calculator, except pg/vg since my nic is indeed 50/50 vg/pg so luckily i didnt butcher the recipe, i guess there really is something off about my nic base then.
I'll have to investigate this further.
Thx alot for your input :)

I always prefer to get all base liquids in a whole base rather than a mix that way you aren't relying on someone mixing it for you telling you it's exactly 50/50 ....do it all yourself much more reliable ;)

I suppose you're right about the pre-mixed stuff.
The thing is tho, the juice smells spot on tictac, and tastes like it when you get a spitback, but the vapor tastes bland & the throat hit is unbearable for a high(er) VG juice. I've made 30/70 vg/pg juices with less throat hit then this. Maybe my bases went bad over time, who knows ^^

edit: just checked the "best before" dates on everything involved and it's all still good for at least another year or so. So yeah, HIC's troubleshooter it is :) and if all else fails i'll remake it while double checking every number.

And again, thx for all the help.

If you don't mind the flavour of white tic tac try HICs recipe for that first as well ... I like this recipe a lot but there is a dry note to it at least I find that I can't vape it for more than a day that's for sure ...the white tic tac though it's my all time favourite recipe on this forum constantly having to make the stuff turns out it's my wife's favourite too! Never gets old and it's great as a flavour base before changing between other flavours to reset the pallet

Being white tic tac has peppermint, anise and vanilla classic in it must be one of the other 3 ingredients ...I reckon it's the mandarin because i also vape HICs pink bubblegum flavour and don't get dry notes and that has orange in it

A good one to try the Mandarin out would be HIC's creamsicles..... or you could just vape each flavor in this recipe on it's own and see what you get for each one.
http://vapingunderground.com/threads/hics-creamsicles-simple-recipe.1869/

Something is very odd that you are not getting the orange taste it's that strong for me but if that was true for you something else should grab you with the flavors involved with this one..... odd indeed.

I've just made and vaped a fresh batch of nic base on a brand new coil (30/70 vg pg this time to carry more flavour) and it tastes like nothing, no bad tastes and an acceptable throat hit, if anything its slightly on the sweet side.
So the next step is to add some flavour to it and see if i get a better result this time.
You're comment about the 50/50 nic base had me thinking tho, i know when i've created the bad batch that i didn't shake my nic, so maybe it was in layers in the bottle and then perhaps i took my % out of the layer of nicotine? because to be fair, the bad taste kinda does taste nicotine-y so it might just be overpowering the other flavours.
Anyway, i've shaken everything this time and the base seems fine.

I'll edit this post when i get results from adding flavour.
Edit: ITS GLORIOUS, Added 6% flavour yesterday and let it steep overnight and it tastes good this time.
Maybe a little on the soft side so i will try a batch with 10-12% flavour but that's all down to personal taste.
So lesson learned bois, shake your nicotine before use.
Thank you all very much for your input and comments, it might not look like much but i learned :)

Peace.

I finally got all the flavors to make this recipe. It's amazing! I love orange tic tacs! I tried it as written, but the orange flavor seemed a little light to me, so I added a touch more orange and mandarin. I'll definitely be making this again! Thanks HIC!:D

Reviving a dead thread :)

Been wanting to try this for sometime now, but I still haven't purchased FA Peppermint or Anise.

Any conversion from FA Peppermint to TFA and Anise to NF Anise?

In my opinion, TFA Peppermint and FA Peppermint are not subs for one another.
I don't have NF Anise, so I don't know about that one.
But why not just try it with the flavors you already have anyway, and see what *you* think.
