Battery Venting (What to do)

I know we're supposed to take good care of our batteries. Vape smart and keep a eye on our batteries while charging. But what the hell do we do if they actually start venting during charging? or vaping? My first thought would be to throw them in the tub and close the bathroom door or throw them off the balcony lol I really don't know what to do. What do we do in case of an emergency? What would you do?

Drop it and run. I don't count on having enough time to even throw it in that situation, and I appreciate having two functional hands :D

I have always thrown them on the back porch or in the driveway until they have cooled down. Then I usually rewrap them and gift them to people I hate (JK).

OHHHHH, YOUUUUU

I can honestly say I'd probably freak out and throw the whole setup like a hand grenade!
(**caresses mod, whispers softly "You wouldn't blow up on mama, would ya, baby..."**)

Best show those jealous batteries some love too. They are the mean ones.

I've vented twice, each time I quickly removed the atty then popped them in water. If it's a thermal run away toss the entire mod, if it's just venting remove them and toss in water or if no water toss in a bush or something like that. Rarely do they ever go into a thermal runaway and if it does it's quick and very violent. Venting the mod get hot and you will hear a slight hissing sound. Again a Thermal Runaway is violent and all you have time for is just toss everything.

When a battery vents recycle it

Carry a bucket half full of sand around with you to throw your venting mod into.

Personally I have never even had a minor venting event.

Well, there is absolutely no downside in planning a reaction to something dangerous - snakes, spiders, electricity, fire - but, OBSESSING over it and trying to control other people - yeah, that's the line-in-sand.

Drop it to the sand/concrete and back away - you can hit it with an extinguisher or hose or a bucket of sand when it's NOT burning a hole in you or lighting the house on fire. And, you goddamned well better figure out what stupidity you did that incurred the wrath of Darwin!

I guess I know how to react or respond when in an emergency situation but I personally handle my batteries and vaping gear properly so I do not worry one fucking bit about charging my batteries when I can't watch them 100% of the time and also use my PC USB Ports to charge MOD's, Phones and power up all the other USB devices plugged into them.

Sure. And, that's excellent. Others need to think about it, and I will wager that folks that vent are almost exclusively demonstrating Darwinian Dumbassery.

The only thing I worry about when vaping is remembering to fill the tank so I don't burn a coil. Venting a battery? WTF man really are you actually doing such stupid shit for it to even be a consideration? Using a Mech maybe, but again really?

I have had a battery vent on a charger. First battery I ever rewrapped didn’t realise the VCT5As insulator in top was removable (and had fallen out when I hit it with the hairdryer). Sparks when I loaded it into charger. Flicked it out the charger (charge on kitchen bench so just sat on stone surface).
Threw the cell been a lot more cautious since.

Shit happens and if you think it'll never happen to you you're setting yourself up for a rude awakening. It's like thinking you'll never ever get into a car accident.

Did not happen because of charging it happened because you fucked up and left the insulator out.

I never said it might never happen I said I don't worry about it and I am prepared to handle it if it was to happen.

Agreed, key thing is to be prepared and know what to do "if" it ever happens.

I had one vent in a mod. Walked across very large home holding it with fingers and threw it in kitchen stainless steel sink lol. Yes, that was dumb but I was not sure what else to do as it caught me by surprise. For those that don't know it is sort of like a bottle rocket but with nasty fumes. it is not like a bomb. except flashlights that are ipx then you pretty much are holding a bomb and they get smoking hot. Probably the most important thing to know besides use good Mods and chargers is never use a battery with any damage whatsoever to the wrapper!

I would set it down and walk away. Then assume it’s going to catch fire to be on the safe side and find water, dirt, upside down bucket lol something to smother it. If it’s in my pocket, pants are going down FAST.

Problem with something like that is it will go into thermal runaway, most vents are minor and if you unscrew the atty quickly then toss the batter in water it won't go into thermal runaway or even just somewhere on the ground or what not. But if the atty and/or the mod gets so hot to even touch toss it for it's on it's way to thermal runaway.

Aahhh I see. So if I break the circuit and cool the cell, I can avoid runaway if I’m not quite there yet? I use a mod with magnetic side panels so I could smack the cell out pretty quick.

Yep but "if" the battery gets too hot to touch toss it immediately, most venting is just inside leaking/oozing out. But if it is either too hot to touch or you see fizzing out it's going into thermal runaway and get rid of the battery immediately. Mag battery doors are awesome though and yes in any case just smack the Mod to pop the batteries out and you're good to go. But remember what oozes out is toxic, wash everything including your hands that touched the battery.

what causes Thermal Runaway is heat, if it is caught before and cools down it won't go into runaway.

Remember take care of your batteries, always inspect for rips, tears or dents. Any tears rewrap, dents recycle it and as long as you take care of them they'll treat you right.

I have vented a fair amount of batteries as I have mostly vaped mech throughout the years and was a very hard drinker. This is a bad combo with cheap, shitty ultrafire batteries which were sketchy at best. These things went off all the time but its what people used then on much higher ohm builds. I would get all wasted and be taking long pulls and you can tell the moment the battery gives.

Its like an MRE heater but more condensed. I cant hear anything so if it makes a sound, it was missed on me. You go from vape train, to a dead hit and then it keeps getting hotter. I can generally smell the battery wrapper melting so its time to jump ship.

Drop the battery, pop in a new one and carry on.

All of my vents were due to stupidity.

MRE, hell flashbacks but in my time we never had heaters ..... Pussy ;)

Anyway I'm shocked with Ultrafires you're still alive ;)

It was ultrafire and laptop batteries, some of which were unidentifiable. We were just making it up as we went. It was a lot of things, but safe it was not. A lot of hard lessons learned and now those issues are gone because of the resources available, wealth of knowledge available and a strong desire to not die.

When all the vape shops started popping up it actually was a good thing where I am and personally I am lucky as there is a vape chain around me that is actually what you would hope a vape shop would be. Friendly, knowledgable and willing to share. These guys taught me a lot.

Yeah Vaping is actually much more safer now with all the knowledge we have now, especially with Mooch ya know. But also back then most were Vaping closer to 1Ω and not what I call stupid low like around 0.05Ω as of today.

Yeah I came late into the game, I started Vaping July of 2015 and didn't get into Mech's until around the first part of 2016. Hell my first Mech was the Noisy Cricket, but had enough sense to thoroughly research and had been building for a few months before taking the leap. Anyway I'll pop a Tootie Puffer on one of my tubes every now and again with around 1Ω build, damn good vape. I really do count myself lucky at starting late because there was a lot more knowledge available.

Anyway back to the point of Venting, I've only Vented twice which was due to faulty inline Voltage checker and other a shitty Clone. Yah hear a small "pop", a bit of a hiss. Just unscrew the Atty or pop the battery door and flip the batteries out. If it's a thermal runaway it'll get to hot to touch right away, then you toss the Mod. Just tossing the Mod with only a Vent to me guarantees a thermal runaway.

Anyway I don't stress it for I religiously check my batteries, take care of my batteries, don't abuse them and don't build stupid low on a single battery Mod.

I had a little starter kit one time that was like a smok v8 stick and the button was fucked up so I tried prying it out and saw a spark and some smoke come out of the button hole and all my mind told me to do was get it out of the house, I ran outside and threw it as far as I could into a snowdrift and waited till the snow melted to see what happened to it

As a general rule I would punt the batteries. Unless I was indoors then things change. If I’m in the kitchen, I’d throw them in the sink. Living/dining room I’d chuck the cells down stairs. If I was downstairs I’d throw the cells upstairs. If I’m in the master bed/bath room I’d throw them in the closet or toilet. If I’m in the nursery I’d throw the cells into the baby’s crib. Anywhere else I’d just punt them into the air and enjoy the show.

You can rewrap your cell on a tear
