The “You Watt” Challenge

images.jpeg
One of the hardest parts about being a new coil builder is understanding what coils to use and why, so in this month’s challenge we ask the community to share their favourite builds in any of the following wattage ranges.

5-20 W
20-30 W
40-50 W
60-70W
80-90W
100-110W
110 -120W
120W + (state your preferred wattage – it’s a bit of an animal)

8abtej1oe7i01.jpg

As to the “why” .....In addition we ask you to describe the conditions you like to vape. This helps budding builders target a list of builds to go for...i.e.
  • Do you like mouth to lung or direct lung (airy to very restricted),
  • 810 or 510 drip tip or something else (chuff it like a tail pipe baby!),
  • Type of atomiser you like the build on,
  • Deep draw or tootle puff,
  • Metals you like using,
  • Build compositions (gauges etc),
  • Like an instant or slower ramp up,
  • Flavour chaser or cloud chaser,
  • Type of mod you use the build for.
….well you get the picture; the more the merrier.

Challenge Specific Rules and Restrictions

  1. Please state the range(s) you use in your post.
  2. Doesn’t matter the type of mod you like using for this one, although to help new builders we stress safety first with building always (the challenge team will tag unsafe advice submissions ...super sub ohm etc.)
  3. You don’t need to show your coil builds if you don’t want to, you can just list out what you like using...(although some may find it easier to understand what you mean with pics)
  4. Do you have a few different builds you like?, or use in different ranges list them all out.
  5. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask others.
  6. Pictures of your builds are welcome of course - it doesn’t matter how photo worthy the coils are, no judgement will be made.micro-1a.jpg
  7. We ask that people respect other members forms of vaping – it doesn’t matter whether you like a cool 8w vape or a magma searing 200W all contributions are welcome.
  8. Unfriendly “bashing” will be tagged and disqualified from the challenge.
  9. VU Challenge Team members have chosen to excuse themselves from all prizes, however are free to contribute.
  10. Global Forum rules apply at all times (http://vapingunderground.com/threads/rules-of-the-forum.255/).

Let's start this off shall we...

I'm a mech squonker who likes a restricted to full lung hit. My most common coil is a fused Clapton with 2x26 N80/40 N80 on a single coil that comes in the 0.3-0.4 range. I like my flavor and clouds are secondary for my On The Road mods. I travel a lot for work and pretty much live in hotels. I have set off smoke alarms, sooooooo I have to calm things down some. I vape in the 40 to 50 watt range.

Pictured is a well used 6 month old 2x28/40 all N80 6 wrap that comes in at 0.39 Ohms. Yeah, it needs a cleaning or maybe even changing, but that is a chore for tomorrow. The GAS G.R.1 on this uses a 510 drip tip.

nE5np7Z.jpg

When I'm home I can get somewhat rowdy at times and go into the 0.1 Ohm range on my 21700 Samsung 30T equipped tubes. That's when I hit the 140 watt range and use the tailpipes.:shades:

Have a pot on me @Pegleg Meg :coffee2:

Well sure, I'll toss in on this one.
I like a moderately restricted draw that is direct to lung. I take rather long draws now that my lungs are back in shape and I like a reasonable amount of fog. Ya, like what's that? Sorry, don't know how to measure it. I'm not chasing clouds, I'm in it for flavor. As far as the mod, I use many but battery life is always something I consider. I don't care for constantly charging or swapping batteries. For me, I've found a number of single coil atties that fit the bill, both RTA and RDA. One of my favorite builds is a simple 26/36 SS clapton on a 3mm rod with six wraps. It hits just under half an ohm, works for VW, TC, or Replay, no problem. I use all three modes dependant upon the mod, day, and the kind of vape I want at the moment. It's super easy to spin enough up for a coil. Sorry, no pic. All that puts me in the 40 to 50 watt range. Ramp time, that's another good question. Depends on the e-juice I'm vaping and my preference at the moment. With some flavors I like a slow ramp, closer to the 40 Watt so I get the separation of flavors as the heat builds. With other e-juices there really is no separation so a quicker rise time works just fine.

Ok, so I'm usually around .12-.16 ohms on my builds and I vape between 60 and 80 watts depending on the coil configuration. Im a direct to lung vaper. I like a tad of restriction or turbulence but not too much. Alien coils and their variations are my favorite build, and Nichrome 80 and SS316L are my metals of choice on my wire. Oh and squonkers are my go to setup.

5-20 W

This is really mouth to lung terrirtory for me, whilst I don’t really vape that way I’ll use a single 26g or 28g round wire SS316L and wrap enough for about 0.8ohms (9 or so wraps more if I can fit it in)

82DF9A17-D914-464E-97F4-B3C26D618E65.jpeg

20-30 W

In this range I’ll typically be using a 22mm RDA more on the restricted direct lung draw, depends on the deck of course but a single Clapton coil (round wire core with thinner gauge wrap like a guitar string) suits me for here

Build is usually 26 or 28g core can be kanthal or SS316L ...I target the build about 0.3 -0.5 ohms

C73E78F8-E43B-4E77-89D7-AAFC4EEC9B35.jpeg

40-50 W

I spend a great deal of time in this range for a lot of my single coil products. 50-55 is my sweet spot as I like a warm vape

Fused claptons (2 core wire side by side with a thinner wrap) / or Flaptons (single piece of flattened wire wrapped with thinner gauge), even an alien coil

When it comes to wire I’ll use N80, Kanthal or SS316L and even mix and match to target my build resistance between 0.15 - 0.4

CE4ADF1D-182F-43AB-A93C-23EADA7EEEBF.jpeg F797BA09-F790-4C4F-AE3E-BE6AFD6ABA18.jpeg

60-70W

When I’m using dual coils this is where I’ll be for the most part around 70-75watts. I like Aliens for here (three cores with a swishy looking wrap)

For these I like kanthal or SS316L core 26 or 28g and typically a N80 wrap 38g as I find it easier to work with.

I also use dual, tri or even quad core fused claptons, staggers in here too.

If I’m using a single coil product I might run an alien or framed alien, (fralien), staple

015B6E07-2931-43CA-8376-5F588FD405EF.jpeg
8606052D-F34E-4488-87C3-CD081523E7A4.jpeg

80-90W

For me this is where complex coils like Framed staples start to come into the picture (again mix and match metals like earlier - being I’m ok with all 3 metal types I plan the build for the resistance I’m going for, and sometimes with more mass it’s easier to use kanthal in the middle rather than the lower resistance alternatives)

0.1 - 0.2 resistance I’ll be aiming for

34B60F16-F195-4969-BE74-2768550AC597.jpeg
7746FA1D-2A49-4648-96E0-8DE1CF791F4F.jpeg

100-110W

This range for me is where the big buggers come into the picture like helix and enigma coils, vape experience starts getting a bit rowdy here and I’ll typically use a vape product that doesn’t transfer heat too easily (avoid them bacon lips and all that)

With the type of build that come in here it’s hard to get out of the lower resistance ranges unless the product has a large deck space 0.1 -0.18

2E472603-91A4-4E46-93D0-EFEDF0722B52.jpeg

110 -120W

Like the range before it some of those coils require a bit of an extra Oomph to get the heated up, however those same builds take time to cool down too so plenty or airflow is in order here

120W + (state your preferred wattage – it’s a bit of an animal)

I avoid going above this wattage for the most part, just to much of an aggressive vape for my personal tastes

As to the “why” .....In addition we ask you to describe the conditions you like to vape. This helps budding builders target a list of builds to go for...i.e.
  • Do you like mouth to lung or direct lung (airy to very restricted),
I’m really a DL vaper, and like either a restricted hit or slightly resistred can’t stand vaping on something that’s like breathing through a snorkel
  • 810 or 510 drip tip or something else (chuff it like a tail pipe baby!),
Depends greatly on the atty itself and what it designed for, however being I like a slightly restricted hit and prefer flavour chasing a 510 suits my tastes well. If I’m using an 810 I prefer the ones with a smaller bore in the middle
  • Type of atomiser you like the build on,
RDAs are my favourite type of vaping product, being a hobby builder means I like to tinker and their decks offer the space to do this, more so than most other products. I have some 30mm products but I much prefer 22mm up to 25mm attys
  • Deep draw or tootle puff,
I’m somewhere in between the two, 3 second draws for the most part and when I vape I’ll chain until I’ve had enough
  • Metals you like using,
SS316L - use this a lot for Temp Control, less so for wattage vaping although I do like using the flatten wire for wattage

N80 - my favourite wire for wrapping with, it’s less springy holds up well to wattage and colours nice for the pics

Kanthal - great core wire to keep resistance up where the other two help with flavour on the wraps
  • Build compositions (gauges etc),
Round wire - 24g, 26g, 28g, 30g for cores
Round wire - 34g, 36g, 38g, 40g for wraps
Flat Wire - 25g (equivalent)
Ribbon - 0.3x0.1, 0.4 x 0.1, 0.5x 0.1

Everything I’ve made will be using something out of this lot
  • Like an instant or slower ramp up,
I like a very slight ramp up when I vape in terms of the heat, but I like pressing the button and it’s away
  • Flavour chaser or cloud chaser,
Either or, but I do like flavour and tend to gravitate towards products that focus on this aspect
  • Type of mod you use the build for.
I use regulated mods for the most part just like the safety and flexibility they offer

However the pure DC hit of a mech is hard to beat (once you learn the safety side) I like parralel or single battery mechs and same for the unregulated counterparts that act in the same vein

I have a series box mod but it’s an animal and works against the way I like to vape for the most part ...getting a 0.5ohm build or above is pretty much mandatory for me using this option

50-70 watts
22g NI80 (Temco wire preferred)
Dual coil 9-10 full wraps each
3.5 ID
Coil wraps are not spaced
Generally lands right around .19-.20 ohms after dry burning and working out hot spots.

I vape wide open DL, using medium bore 810's (preferable) or modified 510's on RTA's (primarily) and RDA's on single battery tubes, parallel mechs or PWM mods of some sort and this combination has served me well for many reasons.
- Fast ramp
- Cool (ish) vape
- Coil mass retains a small bit of heat momentarily allowing for fast follow up hits without delay or long ramps
- Dense plumage
- Easy to build
- Easy to clean
- Easy to maintain
- Cheap to make
- Simple
- Wire diameter is big enough to not deform after repeated wickings
- Wire diameter is not prone to burning out its legs or melting at higher power

In addition to having a very decent mass allowing for nice clouds, it cools quickly overall keeping the RTA/RDA from becoming unbearably hot. This allows for chain vaping if one so desires. It fits in almost everything without space concerns and just works.

It is not an exotic build by any stretch of the imagination but it is dependable, provides a consistent and repeatable experience. This is a build that is accessible to any person who vapes and requires only basic coil building skills.

I'm using only one squonk currently - the Simple EX by Vandy Vape.
1) With the included 1.25 coil I'm going 3.6V with a 25mg nic salt on their atomizer
2) With my Narca I use a .94 ohm coil at 4.2V with 6mg e-juice.

Both coils are simple single strand kanthal at 2.5 mm. The Narca is almost a DL hit. Very restricted. The 1.25 coil is a normal MTL hit. I use the third hole on their atomizer.

I use my own custom series mod with a aromamizer titan and a .4 ohm coil - kanthal. It's a simple clapton wire about 3.5 mm I vape this at over 100 watts (well it's a mech so it varies with the battery life). Never leaves the house - too damn big.

Here's my MTL vape right now, around 25 watts with a full battery - I like short-ish mtl puffs, 2 or 3 puffs per breath (that's how I used to smoke "full flavor" cigs, yuck), mainly want no ramp time but also no overhotness

PSX_20181026_203151.jpg

This is kinda over-the top, 0.2mm ribbon sandwiched between 2x32g kanthal, 46g alien wrap just for fun (does keep coil moist so as to lengthen coil life, though)

0.51 ohms

I like unregulated (but not mechanical) mods the best, so I try to build with a working voltage of 3.2 in mind

I like very tight air in MTL, this is the Etna RDA and I have the biggest air insert option in it because this coil heats very quickly, but there is still enough air resistance for me to enjoy the vape

Right now, I’m vaping this dual coil 30*4/40 ss316 Clapton at 3mm ID.
Comes to 0.13 ohm
Vaping at 71w/560deg with 80w preheat/9 punch on replay mode so it appears to be hitting between 100w-110w

I’m guessing I am a rare vapor who only MTL Vapes, but use Clapton coil.

I’ve been MTL vapor since starting vaping 5 and half years ago, tried the DL thing, just didn’t see the hype myself, tons of vapor, less flavor and go through tons of juice.

I am a flavor chaser, and heard Clapton coils produce better flavor, had no desire to make the Clapton wire, but found lightening Vapes sold Clapton wire that would suit my MTL vaping.

B83046D9-BC48-4241-AC5F-BA32126E5B84.jpeg

I do 6/7 wraps round a 2.5mm bit, and comes out to around 1.5 ohms

A4CA663F-AEAA-4991-B98D-B505D6C43883.jpeg

I vape this build 20-22 watts, it is a warm Vape that I like and great flavor.

Only thing is, I can’t Vape normal single wire now, just really lacking compared to the Clapton coil, so just hope they don’t stop stocking the wire, but be good for a while, got around 15 reels of it :)

I’m always trying the new MTL tanks that are coming out nowadays, but Kayfun Prime is top dog for me.

How is the vape from the prime compared to the 3.5?
3.5 has been my go to mtl tank for years now. Every time I pick up a new mtl tank, I go back to the old faithful.

Just so newcomers aren't intimidated by some of the fine pornography in the other posts - my very first coils were sketchy as all get out

My very first mod was REO squonker with a Chalice 3 clone - this is back when squonking was like a secret kind of vaping and expensive as hell. The guy that sold me the REO coiled and wicked it for me.

Months later, when the coil finally wore out and could not be dry burned ever again, I found a drill bit that fit through the center of his coil, counted the wraps of the old coil, and made a new one with some 28 Awg kanthal.

Repeated that several times before I finally got an actual coil rod and learned to do anything properly or use Steam Engine.

I'm a MTLer, in the 5-20W range, have been since I started vaping, a bit over 5 years ago. I prefer the cooler vape.
  • Do you like mouth to lung or direct lung (airy to very restricted),
I do have some tanks that will DL, I just close them up more (i.e Aromamizer Supreme RDTA or Ammit 22 on smallest setting), so I suppose I'm an airy MTLer. I've sampled DL, it's just not my style, and high VG messes with my breathing.
  • 810 or 510 drip tip or something else (chuff it like a tail pipe baby!)
510 Drip Tip. The only tank I have that takes larger than that, I've never used, it just came with a mod I purchased.
  • Type of atomiser you like the build on
I use RTAs and a couple RDTAs
  • Deep draw or tootle puff
Hmm. I've always wondered WTH is a tootle puff? I draw much like I did a cigarette, but I take longer draws. If that's a tootle puff, god save me, because I think it's a weird term.
  • Metals you like using
I use Kanthal. The only other one I've tried was SS, I just seem to prefer Kanthal. It's cheap, I got the same flavor between the 2, so I go for cheap.
  • Build compositions (gauges etc)
I use 26 gauge, 3mm screwdriver, 6-7 wraps, spaced coil. I get better flavor from these than I did with micro coils and I don't build fancy. I go for ease and convenience.
  • Like an instant or slower ramp up
Never really thought about it, so I guess what I get is kind of a slower ramp up.
  • Flavour chaser or cloud chaser
Flavor, baby! Strangely enough, I've managed to reduce the amount of flavoring that I use in mixes (by quite a bit!) ever since I started making my own coils.
  • Type of mod you use the build for.
My go to mods are also simple, and regulated. Mechs scare me, and I'm not a fancy vaper AT ALL I use an eLeaf Pico most of the time, also use a Joyetech VTC mini. I keep roughly 3 next to me, usually, with different flavors in them. I just like small mods, plus they're pocket-able, which bodes well for me at work.

I suppose that's it. Oh... and just participating, no need to toss my name into the hat to win. I think the challenges are cool, and I like seeing others join in and share how they vape, too.

You had me thinking I missed a kayfun version, even had me google Kayfun 3.5 lol

So long since I vaped on a 3.1, can’t really compare the 2 to be honest, and only used single wire back then, but know I love the prime, just ordered 2 more last week, normally wouldn’t spend that sort of money on tanks, but they are worth it IMO.

I agree. There are (and will be) many fine builds in this challenge. But we all have to start somewhere. For those of you that haven't seen it, this was my very first coil build attempt. I now make coils for a living. No matter where you start, you will always get better.

Very good point! :vino:there’s absolutely no pressure in here to post up coil porn ....all build approaches are welcome, The KISS (keep is simple stupid) approach is preferred by many especially the flavour chasers out there.

The challenge team are interested to see how people like vaping and share there styles with new builders and vapers looking into rebuildables (if anyone is new or looking to build any of the coils by all means jump in and ask questions to the community for this challenge)

My very first coils I made I posted in the squonkers section just some twisted 26g wires, nothing fancy about these although I found they popped and spit like a gooden when firing ...was aiming for 0.3 ohms, used a calculator (steam engine to plan the build) was the start of the building hobby aspect for me!

I agree. There are (and will be) many fine builds in this challenge. But we all have to start somewhere. For those of you that haven't seen it, this was my very first coil build attempt. I now make coils for a living. No matter where you start, you will always get better.

When I started building I was scared shitless with sub-ohm. Also, the Provari would only fire a 1.3 Ohm or more so that is what I built on a KFL.

After I got into REO squonkers I settled in on 0.8 single round wire 26 gauge Kanthal in the good ol' RM2 and Cyclone. Then I moved up to dual coil round wire builds that came in at 0.4 Ohms and stayed with that for several years.

Long story short, whatever produces the vape you want is all you need. It doesn't need to be coil porn, it just needs to work. I hope some of our MTL vapers post on this challenge to show all sides of our world.

Here is one of my first builds, a Kanthal Clapton which that Hazy Asshole tried to tell me I was going backwards building advanced coils for a first time build. The build was 8 Wraps and over .1Ω don't remember too many more details from this build as it was my very first. The picture is of the 1st dry burn and before strumming or straightening.

Is that on top of an MVP 20W?

I doubt a 20W MOD could make those coils glow like that, I mean really 20W do that to coils?

Wicked and primed in this picture but remember wiggles in the coil are from heat waves.

The glowing I think you're referring to is the lousy wicking job. There is no glowing coil in that pic.

The MVP was the first box mod I ever had. Got it as an upgrade from my eGo VV spinner. Still have it! Maybe I'll throw a build together for it.

I am going to do the same thing. I still have my first and second one and they work. Sounds like an MTL evening.

I don't do MTL, but a thin core single fused Clapton should work with 20 watts. Maybe I'll try that.

I think you are having a few glasses of wine because you criticize my wicking with empty freaking coils~! Now apologize for that......
Yeah, you had me confused. Jwill had quoted my post about the MVP and you replied stating it was a Movkin.

Thanks for sharing Gopher ....Yeah me to, hoping to see more of the bonkers posters sharing their favourite builds, squonking is so popular these days especially in UK where getting hold of tanks is harder because of TPD, nearly all online stores over here major in selling RDAs now
