A lot of us have lost a perfectly good mod by either drowning or dunking it in liquid.

Myself included:cuss2:

Some of us are handy with tools and have the knowledge to open up a mod, clean it and put it back together again.

I am not in that category.:(

About a month ago, I managed to drop my Wall Crawler mod into a large glass of wine (it was completely submerged for about a minute) and that is all it took to kill the mod.

A couple of weeks later started thinking (something not recommended by my Mrs.)and I came up with this idea.

I mean, what the heck, the mods a lost cause anyway, right?

I filled a large mug with Distilled Water and dropped the mod in it to soak.

Then I took the mod out, drained it (liquid just poured out of the USB slot) and repeated the process a few times until the liquid started coming out clear instead of wine red.

Then I drained the mod for a final time and just let it air-dry for a few days.

Then I filled the mug with 91% Isopropyl Alcohol, $0.89 at your local Pharmacy.

Then I submerged the mod and let it soak. Took it out a few times to drain it and re-soak it and after a day of soaking, I drained it for the final time and set it aside to dry out for a couple of days.

Keeping my fingers crossed, I installed a freshly charged battery and the thing fired right up!:vino:

And believe it or not, the color display was not affected at all. Still clear and easy to see.

I decided this needed another test, fished out a mod that died (I think) because of a bad connector seal and some E-Liquid got inside the mod.

I repeated the process and it worked once again!:stars2:

Any way, at this point I would invite any and all VU members that have held on to a drowned or dunked mod to try my fix and report back here.

What do you have to lose?

Someone in the bonkers thread fixed a downed regulated mod by running it through their ultrasonic cleaner - which blew me away

Definitely worth trying to fix

Crazy a mod dropped in wine, lol

In theory if you do not try to use the mod after dunking and it is not in something like salt water the method used by Uncle RJ CAN work.
If you dunk your mod do not try to use it and immediately remove the battery.
then try the rinse and dry method.
Whatcha got to lose?

Edit:
Best to do the rinse method fairly quickly before anything has time to dry on the circuit board and such. But then I suppose that is what the isopropyl rinse is for?

The Isopropyl Alcohol serves two purposes.

It flushes and displaces any moisture left within the mod after flushing with water.

Also, it has been used as a contact cleaner like forever.

And when it evaporates, it leaves no or minimal residue on electronics/contacts.

While I cant prove it, I expect that is part of the reason why the display continues to function and is clear and easy to read after this process.

I suspect that your display was well sealed as all of them should be.

I would not recommend an ultrasonic cleaner as the vibrations could do bad things to the chips and such.

Seeing that one of these mods failed due to lack of proper sealing in the 510 connection, are you willing to bet your life on ALL of the displays being properly sealed?:D

some are some not depends on who they get the display from and what their specs are for it.
Based on my experience with LCD type displays it is usually bad news if they get any liquid in them.
Even solvents designed for cleaning electronics with virtually zero residue.
ALL LCD displays should be well sealed in anything and imho ALL electronics in mods should be dip sealed in a good sealant.

I use denatured alcohol all the time at work to clean circuit boards. Following a good soaking and brushing, I place the board in a cardboard box with a hair dryer blowing inside. After a good baking the board looks like new; thorough drying gets the moisture out of any critical spots. Dry it well before using!

As long as it was not box wine from Sams :)

HOW DARE YOU INSINUATE THAT I AM PURCHASING BOXED WINE FROM SAMS CLUB:cuss2::cuss2::gaah:

I get my boxed wine from Kroger!:D

Truth be told I have one largish glass of boxed red wine (has to be red) once a day for medical reasons.

My Cholesterol levels used to be pretty bad and I was taking meds to keep it all in check.

Since I have started drinking one glass of boxed red wine every day, I have quit the meds and my Cholesterol levels are textbook perfect!

When I have gone through the trouble of making a really, REALLY nice meal, if a red wine is called for, I break out a bottle of Tanto Zamora which is a dryish red wine with hints of fruit and very low on tannin's which give me a headache

Ahh Kroger boxed wine is fine :)
I went off of BP and cholesterol meds shortly after switching from smoking to vaping.
Both are now within acceptable range for an old Phart like me.

RJ I have the bitter gene and any alcohol tastes bad to me.
I drink for effect not for taste or to enhance a meal.
If it came down to drinking wine every day or taking a pill I would choose the pill.

And how anyone can say that scotch tastes good....
To me it is kinda like getting a bit of gasoline in my mouth while siphoning...
Horrid stuff.

It was indeed a freak accident.

I cannot tolerate Scotch or Gin.

Other than coffee or iced tea, my adult beverage of choice is Strongbow Hard Cider.

Gin is like drinking cedar tree juice.
And american iced tea is bitter to me.
I can do some oriental teas, hot. But some taste like alfalfa.

gin is juniper; scotch is peat-bog. (although, I've had some scotch I can't recall that did not taste like peat from a garden place smelled).

An EE friend of mine has mentioned the 2 magic words: "Conformal coating" - this is a sealer used on electronics to obviate humidity and drips. etc - it would appear that only Evolv for sure, and YiHi (probable) use a "conformal coating" on their populated boards. We've discussed the idea of field-testing new mods with a spray-job of "conformal" before ever using, but I'm using my DNA's and a mech, and he's happy with his eleaf's, (yes, it's my fault he bought and likes them ;-).

You can buy the stuff in spray-cans fro Digikey or Mouser, so it may well be worth someones time to give this a shot: get a new mod? Open it up, spray it down for a few light coats, close it up - and go. (Anyone have a 'Favorite B&M' that wants to give it a whirl, feel free. Report the results ;-)

If it was not powered on this is the perfect way to dry out electronics. Alcohol is Petroleum based and NOT Recommended.

This douche is supposed to have me ignored. Most Isopropyl is not synthetic. Not talking about drinking alcohol.

Had to peek and see if you were posting bad advice.
someone obviously needs to keep an eye on you.

There are many types of alcohol and yes some are made using coal, natural gas, oil, etc.

OMG you are vaping anti freeze LMAO.

You read all my posts douchebag, stop your shit already. GFY with keeping an eye on people you need a 24 hour caregiver.
LOL I need a full staff of caregivers 24 hr.

You should try it.

And nope that was the first post of yours I had peeked at in months.
I did not want someone to mess up their mod with a possible plastic attacking cleaner.

Too bad you yourself state you are too cheap to pay for the kind of care you need. Say whatever you like you think it isn't obvious you read my posts since you always feel you must contradict what I post with incorrect information. Get a life and stop derailing this thread. There is nothing better than QD Contact Cleaner so go drink some of your alcohol and go to bed old fart.

QD Contact Cleaner

I will give you this it does say safe for use on all plastics but I would not use on transparent plastics.

But it is composed of alcohol and petroleum distillates which kind of negates your post.

CRC QD contact cleaner is a unique blend of petroleum-distillates and alcohol which provides a suitable precision cleaner for sensitive electronics. It is a cost effective alternative to all contact cleaners. It Evaporates quickly and leaves no residue and is safe to use on all plastics.

yep very good contact cleaner.

I think I have some on the shelf.

And as to alcohols. PG is pretty much an alcohol.
And made from petroleum based products.

Something being made using petroleum based products vs containing petroleum distillates are VERY different things.

Propylene glycol (also known as 1,2 propanediol) is a relatively small molecule with two alcohol (hydroxyl) groups (-OH). It is a colorless, odorless liquid that is completely water-soluble. PG is a synthetic product obtained from the hydration ofpropylene oxide, which is derived from petroleum products.

LOL. He was correct that some types of alcohol are made from petroleum
However his recommended alternative is toxic and contains petroleum distillates.
And while it may not eat up plastics I would NEVER use on clear plastic.
Have gotten burned by fogging up clear plastic in the past using petroleum based solvents.

RJ I have the bitter gene
.

In regards to your Bitter Gene...........................

Sadly, I am a bit of a Coffee Snob.

Unless desperate for a caffeine fix, I pretty much wont drink coffee unless I make it myself.

Gotta be as Dark As Sin, Hot As Hell and Stronger Than Hercules!

That being said, years ago, I discovered that just adding the smallest pinch of either Sea Salt or Kosher Salt to the grounds before brewing (also to you cup of Joe) in many instances Tricks The Tastebuds into not tasting the Bitter Notes in whatever you are drinking.

Just like salting a Watermelon and other melons and fruits makes them taste sweeter.

Now I return you all to the regularly scheduled Pissing Match

Neither works for me. But thanks for the tip.

things that are bitter as heck to me taste sour to others.
Persimmons. wife says they are just a bit sour after they are frosted on.
Pure horrible bitter to me.
Now green gooseberrys are pure sour.

All cooked greens are horribly bitter to me.
Brocoli somewhat.

have a kid that does not like things like that?
Maybe the bitter gene instead of being a picky eater.
Being forced ot eat greens was horrible for me as a child.
No one believed me when I told them how bad they were.

One reason I left home as soon as possible.
