Axial RDA Build

Hey gang, I decided to do my first write-up on a build. I specifically chose my new Axial RDA as I came up with some helpful tips to get a really good experience with this RDA.
For this build I chose 26ga SS316L, 6 wraps around 3.5mm, spaced. For me this is a good build for a restricted DL/loose MTL build.
c5c7445ed4ae292ee1b9c6687f00c36b.jpg

I angled the coil like so. In this way, the slots to access the screws are covered to prevent leaking, and the airflow is not covered. Notice where the jig is aligned:
e97d26d2fbbe71b1b0b8680ce376fe0d.jpg

Came out to .55 ohms, dry burn pulsed at 15 watts until the inner winds are blue and the outer winds are purple and legs are golden.

Took a section of rayon, removed about a quarter:
7669fc3a5cab703232b3aaef78ea8d5c.jpg

Thinned out the tails with a dental pic. It's progressively thinner from the coil outward.

Tuck the wick into the wells as so:
6d37b180df8bfe2203da651aae840406.jpg

Prime the wick, and use tweezers or a dental pick to make sure the air holes are not blocked but the screw slots are:
e5721345e6f480e31f1ca012b4968b8a.jpg

At 420 degrees and 55 watts, on two airholes open this is a really nice flavorful build with not too much vapor.

Hope this was a help to anyone! Enjoy!

I think it's safe to say, we'll be seeing a spike in Axial users. I have no idea how I'm going to build on mine. I have some ideas but want to see it in my hand first.
I think you're right @Just Frank, with that sale on Arkansas Eliquid. I picked up a couple and really like it so far. I curled my wick tails but I like @VinnySem's method of angling the coil. Anyway, here's my (gunked up) 2x26g/36g Ni90 clapton (3.0mm 6 wraps) at 0.22 Ω on a VA Spade squonk. Nice flavor and air adjustments. Haven't oversquonked (yet).

Thank you! I have a black one but looking at the shiny SS one is making me think twice. I have the purple top cap & the amber colored PEI topcap set coming next week.
I really like the polished SS with the VA Spade since it matches the fire button. The black one surprised me a little in that it's a gloss black, almost a hint of gunmetal but very nice color and finish. For some reason I was expecting flat black, not sure why. I didn't order any colored caps, but may if they keep the sale going. I wanted a red one and that was sold out. The SS is pretty nice....

Yes I wanted the red one too!

edit: the SS looks killer!

That looks awesome. That's the one I ordered. I was going to get a black delrin chuff cap but waited a day too long. It was sold out when I ordered, so I got the ultem one. I almost got a purple barrel to match my Squeeze 2 but decided not to. I only wanted to spend around $20 and my total was close to that.

I don't think I have anything that polished SS will match with lol. Oh well, I'm just hoping I can learn how to get it performing optimally for the way I like to vape. I usually like one big single coil but plan on trying duals on the Axial.

Nice. Got talked into one by a few folks here, waiting on mine. For some reason I thought it would be smaller but realized it's more or less a full size rda. Got the stainless even though it won't really match. Most of my atomizers are black and I just wanted something different. Hard to go wrong with stainless. I'm no fashion expert but sometimes to me there's a simplistic beauty in bare steel. Grabbed the clear pei cap/tip set for it as well. I may try a single coil but have a feeling if I were to use it more for vaping vs flavor testing I'd go with something more like f1r3b1rd's dual coil setup. Even at $35-40, proof that good looking rda's don't have to cost $80-90+.

It's a boring Sunday evening so I decided to get my Axial out.

I found some Wotofo coils durring the 4th of July sale at Element Vape. They're the tubes that hold ten pre-wound coils ($2.99). I used a set of N80, 3x28ga + 38ga. They were supposed to be .15Ω for dual coil. They're more like .2 maybe because I made the legs so long. I used a coil tool and cut them off at 8mm. I wasn't sure where to cut them, but wanted the coils close to the airflow holes.

I took some photos of my first try.

1215191903-1.jpg

For tri-core fused claptons these aren't very big. I usually use 3x26 core for a single coil, and those are much larger. There's imperfections in some of the wraps but whatever, I don't care.
1215191901a-1.jpg

Sorry this ones so shiny. I wanted to show where my coils lined up with the AF.
1215191901b-1.jpg

1215191917b-1.jpg

My Basium hasn't been used in weeks. It needed some lovin.
1215191927-1.jpg

I'm getting pretty good flavor off this. The cotton needs breaking in though, I can tell. I used a Geekvape Feather Cotton lace. *Actually scratch that. This stuff breaks in pretty fast*

The wide open aifflow section is A LOT of air. I like the 3 hole part, but find myself wanting a little more air sometimes. So I go back to the wide open part and dial it down.

If there's ways to get even more flavor off of this, I'm gunna find out. But right now, I'm pretty happy I got this. I needed this after the 2x Asmodus Barrage let downs lol. I haven't had that good of flavor off of those.

Edit- I forgot to say, I'm using this at 55W and get plenty of nice warm vapor, and again very good flavor.

I found cook placement to play a big role in flavor.
I cut my legs around 6mm, still leave the coils even with the airflow but this makes them a little further from the air port. When I look down the driptip I can see both coils.
I found I get much better flavor this way than kicked out to the edge.

20191215_212041.jpg 20191215_212015.jpg

It looks counterproductive to flavor at first; but, for whatever reason it works.

Thanks for the tip! I just winged it my first try. I'll definitely try it that way too.

Could be that not setting them close to edge, allows air [or more air] to go under coil and utilize the space between the posts to let air come up between coils and hit that back side.

No worries, I am my no means an expert. But, I've had this as my go to atty since shortly after it released. That view through the drip tip and height in relation the airflow are my two check points when I build it. Like I said, it looks like it shouldnt work, maybe it does because its really a 23mm RDA with a condensed chamber??

Also, make sure there is no wick under the coils... leave a clear path for air travel around the coil and to your mouth hole.

Apologies if I missed this earlier in the thread, but is anyone experiencing major ‘weeping’ issues with this RDA? Mine stays soaked at the bottom, just wondering if you guys replaced the orings with a different size? Or do the plastic caps seem to fix the problem?

Besides the leaking, I’m really enjoying the rda. It’s perfect for a single, ginormous oct-core fused Clapton.

Hope this was a help to anyone! Enjoy!

I angled the build in this RDA the same way you did. My coil is a 4mm N80 staged (2x26/38 plus 24 ga round) at 0.31 ohms. Wicked with CB V2. Great flavor and plenty of vapor for me on 2 of the 3 small air holes, a semi-restricted DL.

The angled position of the coil even works when the air isn't directed right at the coil. You can turn the air to about 45 degrees, let it sweep down the side of the coil, and get vapor and flavor that's just as good, if not a tiny bit better, than having air hit it head-on. Maybe that doesn't make sense, but in my observation, it's true.

I've since sold my Axial, in favor of a Reload S for a single-coil RDA. IMHO better overall vape experience.

Hope you enjoy your Reload! I only have a clone, but even the clone is quite good.

Am waiting as we speak on a Reload RTA clone from FT. Excited to get that one, now if it will just HURRY UP! :) Fat chance, though. lol

I'm really enjoying the Reload! I have both an X and an S. I am tempted to get one of the FT clones! Which one did you get? LMK how you like yours after you evaluate it for a bit :D

This is the clone I'm waiting on:

https://www.fasttech.com/p/9621855

I probably will try it as single-coil first, if I can get it built so that it doesn't leak. Will keep you posted! I have high expectations even for the clone, and have no idea if this is even a good clone, so we'll just have to see. Would have preferred to have one of the ones labeled as 304 or 316 stainless, but they were out of stock.

I have Axial, Reload S and Reload S clone.
I almost always squonk with all, xcept the clone I bought for the colored cap>that fits og deck pretty good, a little loose but not so much that
I've changed the o-rings to try to tighten it up.
S squonks the best, Axial drips the best. both very good in either mode imo too.
Here's the S clone I bought and the quality of the machining at the screws is lacking. They work but if going for a clone I'd look at feedback for a diff brand first, if there is one. Just sometimes using the cap atm and the deck is stashed.

Wow, check this out. This is a pretty thing! (imo)

Probably better quality than the one I bought, which was this one:

Unfortunately, the two SXK clones they have are both sold out.

It's only the stainless SXK model that says it's out of stock. Sorry, that's my mistake. Although I'm with some of the rest of you - I don't order items from them any more if they don't specifically say "in stock."

I don't really get weeping issues under it. Maybe check you're using the solid pin and not the squonk? Like maybe they installed the squonk pin by accident. Only wetness I've gotten is if popping the cap often to drip while using the beauty ring. Every time I push the cap back on and it glides over the edges of the cotton a little bit of juice gets pushed down and forced into the gap where the beauty ring leaves room for the cap. Any rda will do that though.

I love me SXK Reload S. It squonks I little ‘tight’ but it’s worth the hassle. It’s above the Axial on my personal list.

I haven't had that issue in the months I've had it, and I use it frequently.

WTH? I’m the only one? Lol

Sounds like I got some bunk orings, will have to find replacements.

If I over drip or squonk without the top cap on liquid will get between the beauty ring and deck, but that's user error on my part. Other than that I've had zero issues. Mine felt daily use.

Just a report back about my seeping issue:

The orings on the base of the RDA were beginning to dry-rot. I swapped them out and started using the ultem topcap and seeping has completely stopped. These RDAs aren't that old. So the quality of orings is questionable. Still well worth the price and hassle tho!
