help me get into RBA-s

Hello, recently i purchased Ijoy Saber; single 20700 battery, 100W cylindrical regulated mod with subohm tank.
i also purchased 2x 20700 batteries and nitecore Q2 charger for them.

is this mod any good for RBA-s?
i was thinking about getting RDTA for it.

now since im newbie about RBA-s, i have few questions.
my biggest concern is will it leak?
if i put RDTA in my backpack and carry it around it will change positions (side to side, even upside down)
i googled it and as i understood, only thing keeping e-liquid from entering coil chamber is cotton.
which means if you leave it laying on the side, it is matter of time when it will start leaking.
please correct me if i am wrong.
i didn't have leaking problems with subohm tank that came with this mod and i carried it in my backpack all the time.

i'm usually vaping at 40W, so which RDTA would you recommend?

well i am newbie on the matter, googled and RDTA came up, but if you say top airflow RTA, then that's what i'll go for.
can you recommend one?

There's lots to choose from for top airflow rtas. Check out some YouTube reviews on the Wotofo serpent elevate and the Wotofo intake rtas.

thank you for pointing me in right direction.
so i googled and "Geekvape Zeus X RTA" came up as "virtually leakproof"
can you check, will it fit my ijoy saber, since i'm not sure

Just an FYI but RDTA and RTA are 2 different beasts. An RTA is like your subohm tank. RDTA is at atty on top of a smaller tank.
Leaking will depend on your wicking for the most part.
Don't forget to buy wire and cotton.
Wire will depend on how many ohms you want your coils to be, unless you purchase coils made by someone else.
What ohms are the coils you use now?

I'd hold off on the Zeus X since a few have said its not the easiest to wick.

The elevate and intake are single coil attys known for being leak proof, easy to build and produce great flavor.

now i'm using 0.15 ohm coils and i'm vaping it at 40W
i'm not freak about flavour and big clouds, just need something reliable and simple to get me into RBA-s game

Sure. Wattage mode only but that's probably all you need, for now at least.
Single battery mod works well with single coil RTA. What 20700 batteries are they?
OFRF Gear 24mm
Wasp Nano RTA 23mm
OBS Crius II single coil is 25mm. And the flavor is WOW! Really easy to build/wick without leaking. Doesn't leak a drop.
Has 510 connection for drip tip and there are wider 510's than what it comes with if that's your preference. If you want 5ml capacity for it I know one that fits.

A Dead rabbit RTA is super noob friendly and is not prone to leaking. It also has a better airflow than the Zeus and the wotofos (IMO).

ijoy 20700 batteries;
  • Nominal Capacity: 3000mAh
  • Maximum Discharge Current: 40A
  • Continuous Discharge Current: 20A
  • Nominal Voltage: 3.7V
  • Top: Flat Top
  • Type: NCR
  • Size: 20700

ok guys, thanks for all the info, now i have enough material to do my homework and choose RTA that will work fine for me.

now i have to learn about coil building and wicking, so any advice is welcome.

Pick out a few attys that interest you and then watch reviews on YouTube to get familiar with how the attys should be built. :)

i decided to go for Wotofo Serpent Elevate RTA, ordered it.
as for coils, before i get into building coils myself i will try premade coil that comes in packaging.
and that is:
- frame staple clapton coil
- power range 40-55W
- 3mm
- 0.33 ohm
not sure which material, N80 maybe that stands for material, i dont know need to research wires more.

and i'll take it from there

Make sure you let us know how it goes!

sure, there is tons of stuff i need to research, but i think it will go well.
i always liked tinkering with stuff.
i'll post pics.

so, my Wotofo Serpent Elevate RTA arrived today:

here's the RTA itself:

i also got some organic cotton:

so, got everything i need for now, let's build:

click for bigger image

since i did my homework building was easy, took coil that was included in packaging (0.33 ohm), clipped it's legs to about 4.5 mm, secured it into build deck, positioned it correctly, burned in, worked hotspots and it was time for wicking.
so i watched instructions about building this RTA on YT and everyone warned that wicking this RTA is tricky which proved to be truth.
so i wicked it:

click for bigger image

i thought i wicked it pretty good first time but when is started to vape i noticed some of unvaporized juice came right up.
i wicked it too thin, and too much juice was entering the coil chamber resulting in juice not being vaporized.
back to building, this time i put more cotton.
and bingo, that was it.
this time juice was vaporized just as it should.

so in comparison with my original subohm tank that came with my Ijoy Saber, Wotofo Serpent Elevate RTA really suprised me with better flavour and i expected less clouds, i was wrong.
this thing really smokes especially if you crank up watts.
airflow even when full open is more restricted but i dont mind it since i like some resistance being present when inhaling, that's the way i vaped it with original subohm tank.
what really suprised me was wattage needed to vape; on my original subohm tank (0.15 ohm coil) i vaped at 40 watts and voltage would go around 2.5V on full battery, on Wotofo Serpent Elevate RTA voltage goes around 3.5V which is whole 1V up even better is fact i'm vaping it at 25W using coil that came in package (0.33 ohm) in reality it makes 0.37 ohms.
coil is rated at 40-55W but i found out that vaping it at 25W still generates lots of smoke and flavour is good.
vaping like this doesn't even get the tank warm in comparison to original Ijoy subohm tank which was getting pretty hot.

my original Ijoy saber with subohm tank (imo looks beautiful):

and ijoy saber with Wotofo Serpent Elevate RTA:

click for bigger image

not as beautiful any more but much more functional and fits my needs much better.
i only have it for a day now and my first impression is very positive.
this was my first build ever, i had some beginner's issues but there is learning curve and there is alot to learn; building my own coils, experimenting with resistances, mixing my own e-liquids...
but let's take it one step at the time.

for about week of use i'll post my final thoughts on this RTA
thanks everyone for helping me.

All of that sounds like you did an excellent job of choosing a good RTA, and then putting your own smarts to work to sort out problems and get it done! Good for you! By the way, welcome to VU!

The OBS Engine nano is the one that got me.

Speaking of Zeus. I need to make some coils and stick one in good old Zeus. Haven't vaped that tank in a bit.

The Engine Nano is terrific. I really like mine a lot.

You folks are late bloomers eh? I started with the subtank when the released the rba deck. Still use them when I'm not squonking. lol
I've also got a dead rabbit rta but it looks silly on my old eVic.

I vaped MTL with Kabuki clones and factory coils for years, was convinced I'd never be able to manage rebuildables. This group of degenerates convinced me otherwise. :giggle:

Have three eVic VTwos myself. Hussar clone RTAs work great on them.

Cotton is the only thing keeping any tank from leaking, sub-ohm or rebuildable, that and being closed/vacuume (like the trick of filling a submerged glass and lifting it above the water line)
IME I’ve had way more sub ohm tanks prone to leaking than a properly wicked rta.

I Had a vTwo. Loved that thing to death, outlasted an 18650 by hours! Then it stopped taking a charge. It got disassembled and I put the board in a box I made out of Styrene plastic with an 18650 battery sled, an 8ml bottle and fat daddy 510, now it's a VTSquonker. She's ugly as sin, but she's mine! lol

Yep, I certainly am a late bloomer. I'm on my second year of vaping so there's worlds of stuff that came out before I jumped on board. :D

I think you made a better choice with the top airflow rta rather than an rdta. Especially if throwing it in a pack without worrying too much about leaking was critical for you. Still have to be careful and remember it's in there so you don't break the glass. Rdta's are fine but they're not sealed like an rta is. Along with the fact that the top cap isn't screwed down, just slip-fit on there. Depending on the rdta some top caps fit fairly snug, others are loose enough you wouldn't want to grab the top to pick your mod up. Meaning it could've slipped loose and come off in your bag. They're also better when kept upright like mod sitting on a desk. The tipping action soaks the wicking to keep it wet when vaping but not really suited to laying on its side.

There's definitely a sense of satisfaction with rebuildables, realizing you're not held hostage by factory coils. Even if you go back and forth with factory subtanks, you know if you've got wire and cotton you're good to go.
