VPN's are touted as saving whales.

Near as I can tell, all it does it obfuscate your ISP - every agency in the world can still see what's going on. If I worked full-time, yes: I'd add a VPN to my payments.

I do not have a webcam so they cannot actually watch me.

Now that would piss me off.

Anyone who believes they actually have online privacy is a bit delusional in my opinion.
Also even with VPN most have tracking cookies on their PC...
And if you have alexa or the like or google talk type things on your smartphone or tablet....

And most all net traffic is monitored in several nodes around the net by automated and human systems.
It started out being called Carnivore, but the name got out and they changed the name but kept and expanded the system.
I worked for many years in a major data center of a major backbone provider.
I am only allowed to talk about what made it out to the public by other means.

Yeah, me and wife's BIL discussed this once. Our conclusion, "want it not available or secure, leave it off line." Given a power plant in Iran had an infiltration by Struxnet even while offline, easy enough to see even you're not as secure as you might think. In that particular case someone had physical access & loaded it via a flash drive onto the computer.

I don't know if I use a VPN or not. I might, or not. Not sure it actually matters. Know I use a good deal of counter-intrusion and forensics software hacks keeping my 'puter reasonably safe. And yep NSA knows I have a little porn on here, furniture porn, vaping porn, house porn too. Not like I need to hide it. "Oh look, an adult man looking at porn, we ought to red flag this." "Nope, nothing to see there, move on."

unless u live in country like china, where everything your used to is banned then i dont really think u need to spend the money on a vpn. yes i knoe there is free vpns out there but most of u are not cheap (unlike me) and paying for one runs much better in my part of the world.

One benefit of a VPN is being able to view content in countries that do not allow you to view in your own.

We use ours with the fire sticks, but for a lot of every day use it's just a nuisance. Some sites won't let me log in or browse till I turn it off.

Yes, its built in to latest OPERA browser, click it on or off at will. At times I've noticed it slows down surfing on Internet, loading pages can be slower, but the best part, its free .

When I worked remotely for a data center i used a high strength corporate VPN WITH RSA key fob dual authentication.
Probably the most secure method. I was also not allowed to use the work PC for ANY other purpose.

VPN will always slow down data rates due to encryption overhead if the VPN is real.
I have no faith in the VPN lite floating around now.

Want to stay out of trouble on the net?
Do nothing illegal online.
Good virus and spyware protection.
And be very suspicious of an email you may get from Jesus Christ or the like :)
I have actually gotten a few :D

I have multiple VPNs but for different purposes. My home based server uses one for... "downloading backups of my movies and tv shows" and my router has a VPN I can use when I'm working remotely if I need to get any files from my home network. Lastly I have a Google VPN through my phone service that activates anytime I connect to any public WiFi network.
