Currently reading “A Dance With Dragons” which is the fifth installment of the “Game of Thrones” series by George R.R. Martin. So far, I’ve liked all the books in this series. Almost done with 5 and then to the last.

My Daughter keeps trying to get me to watch the Game of Thrones......she thinks because I'm a history buff I'd like it. I just finished a book about America's worst female serial killer...she poisned old people in her nursing home back around the 1900's...they thinks she may have poisend as many as 40 people.

Factfulness by Hans Rosling. It's about using facts to understand the world. The author spent decades trying to get people to consider available factual information about things before making conclusions.

In breaking news, scientists have finally convinced a leopard to change his spots.

I don’t really think it has to do with too much “history” per say except it’s set in a fantasy world a long time ago. I’ve only met 1 person who didn’t like game of thrones. I think it’s a work of art. The show and the books alike.

This thread is a good idea. Going to tap into this for some new reads.

Presently reading "It's a Long Story, My Life: Willie Nelson" by Willie Nelson and David Ritz.

I pretty much only read nonfiction.

Spent the other day reading A River Runs Through It, for about the tenth time.

Also read Billy F. Gibbons short biography, Rock and Roll Gearhead the other evening.

I finished Out Bad, by Donald Charles Davis, which I had set aside for awhile.

Next up: Ball Lighning, by Cixin Liu

I read a lot of different stuff.

A River Runs Through it was a pretty good book....he's a good writer...I'm sort of surprised he didn't publish more than he did.

I don't think he started writing until he was retired. And he was published by Chicago Press, who had never tackled anything like a book at the time.

more is the pity....meanwhile you have John Grisham writing the same novel over and over again with 16 different titles.

I haven't picked up a Grisham novel for 25 years. If you have read one, you have read them all. I DO like a Ken Follet now and then but I haven't picked one up in awhile. My wife loves both authors and has everything they ever wrote in dead tree form. Myself, I've gone the Kindle route for a long time now. If the `pocolypse comes, I will be screwde, blued, and tattooed, but I will also have my good wife's collections to fall back on.

Currently reading Artificial Condition, book 2 in the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. It’s pretty interesting. I’m really liking it, and I’m a hard sell on science fiction.

Which one? And is it good? I haven’t read any of them yet, but Old Man’s War is in my TBR pile.
The Consuming Fire. It's the second book in a new series for him - The Collapsing Empire is the first book. This second book in the series was very good; better than the first.

I love reading classic literature books from the like of George Orwell, Alexander Dumas so I never run out of books to read (just run out of time :p). Heard a lot of Catch-22 but never have a chance to read it.

If you're into Science Fiction Iron Sky.....you owe it to yourself to read the Lensman Series, by E.E. Smith. Written between the 1930's and 40's or so, so while part of the first book might seem a little dated, you just have to put yourself back into the 1930's to get how amazing this series is and was. Kind of a transgalactic epic.....very good stuff, hard to put down. Different authors, even the writers from Star Trek borrowed ideas from this series.

Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy, by Cixin Liu. Three Body Problem, Dark Forest, and Deaths End. Chinese hard science fiction that starts at the cultural revolution in the 60's and goes to the end of the universe. I read this trilogy a couple years ago. Starting on it again.

I keep telling myself I'll finish up reading Terry Pratchett's The Wee Free Men. Keep avoiding finishing it. In it a character mistakenly thinks that a relative she knew all her life was an enigma to her. The character then realizes that she was wrong, and that she did indeed know the relative.

The way Mr. Pratchett wrote it hit home with me regarding my Pap. I had felt like I never genuinely gotten to know him because we seldom if ever hugged, seldom spoke of much more than fishing, gardening, hunting, tracking and in general country life and living. As the character began to realize, so too did I.

I recalled a memory of being a very younger boy. I was getting ready to go to Pap's bed because he worked from 11 PM to 7 AM, he rose around 10 Pm to get ready. I had gone on into the bathroom with him in it shaving. I come over to wash my hands, he asked me to hand him his Old Spice.

As young boys are wont, I asked why he wore Old Spice. "Your grandma bought it for me when I come back from the war." It was a devilishly simple statement but one which now as an older fellow held a lot of profound meaning. I bawled my soul out thanks to Mr. Pratchett's writing such a scene in such a manner as to enchant me in. It was his writing that brought the memory back, and it's his writing now that keeps me avoiding finishing the book.

My Pap is gone now but my Pap remains. Sometimes if I listen to myself, I hear him. It comes through in how I live with love for my wife and don't need to constantly tell her audibly I love her. I also don't need reminded to take time out to consider her. These are lessons my Pap's words conveyed, "Your grandma bought it for me when I come back from the war."

the 5 tiffany aching books, of which that was the first, are pratchetts best work.

I won't argue they aren't but will say some of the Discworld series is also rather good too. I liked the one where the brothers invented clones and had all the free labor they could handle to build pyramids. I think in it Mr. Pratchett also explains how camels do math. Sure he might have been going full on crocker but total genius in the humor. Hi lar ious stuff he could weave into a tale. :)

The Dwarves series by Marcus Heitz is a very enjoyable read. Written for young adults the books are clever enough for all ages. The characters are very likable and also very humerous. I am ordering the 5 book series from Amazon so I can read them again. This time in order.

Its on youtube, I will be listening tonight. Woohoo.

And it should be Jeffrey from Coupling doing it. :giggle: It was on Four Extra or 7. Enjoy, it’s a really good adaptation.
Don’t like all of HP’s stuff, but that one is good, along with Shadow Over Innsmouth, imho.

Ooh Richard coyle, nice voice, haven't seen coupling but I recognise the voice.
Yea I'm not sure how much of lovecraft I actually like but he definitely deserves reading if you can ignore the old fashioned attitudes. Ridiculously influential and that's why I read him originally, to understand other writers work better.
Pt 2 tonight, eeeek

Coupling is pretty missable! lol But Richard Coyle has that great Welshie voice and he’s a decent actor as it turns out.
I’m pretty sure HP was neurotic to the max, but yes he is influential . I read a few, had nightmares for a week, and basically never read him again.
Does the one you’re listening to have that horrible presenter? And now...lol
Nice talking! Have a good one.
