I have a friend who has just gotten into vaping. He wants a mod that uses 2 batteries that he can make his own coils. What would you recommend?

Reload RTA is dual coil and a lot of people like it. I'm currently using a Zeus X on my rx gen3 dual.

Yeah good grief, there's endless options these days. A couple good ones already. How much money does he want to spend?

Not too horrible a price on the Zeus X either. My usual range is $5 - $25 but if a tank like this proves a solid performer, an extra $10 or so isn't untenable. And with these folks bringing it up as a good tank, to me it warrants the extra outlay of cash.

For now though I'll be content with my Gorge & Wasp Nano RDAs. Need to get another NaRDA clone. Seems the peek insulator for the positive post is wanting to keep slipping from the deck. Fairly sure I do not have the "proper" squonking 510 pin to set into it & that's why it's being a PITA. Never can really tell regarding those pins either. It fits and holds posts in place or it doesn't. So, not sure exactly what size I'd need. With NaRDA clones being so cheap, easy enough to get a new one.

I think @JuicyLucy hexed my NaRDA clone because I sang the NaRDA song too much. :) Hope she doesn't mind my "Gorge, gorge, gorge of the jungle!" song. ;) :p

Apologies for the OP, I'm writing about single coil RDA. I do think though the Zeus X looks like a product to meet your needs. You might also like a Griffin, it has a velocity style deck which can help people learn building. I don't use tanks much anymore.

Wismec Reuleaux RX2 21700 with two pairs of Molicel INR21700-P42A batteries and an external battery charger, and yes of course the Reload RTA.

Use the mod in wattage mode with ArcticFox firmware (free download) installed on it, and, by using NFE Tools software (free download) on a Windows PC you can edit your own custom power curves that you can then upload into the mod via USB connection. Set the Preheat Type to 'Curve', and select your power curve from the list that also appears. Each power curve can be individually user-edited through the very straightforward Curve Editor feature of NFE Tools. This will allow you to experiment with the preheat, to reduce the ramp up time of the coils and to prevent the coils from running too hot after their ramp up period finishes. The USB connection no longer is needed after you uploaded all your final settings into the mod. There exist other mods that let you use a custom power curve. ArcticFox differs from the rest in that the power curves use percentages. I.e., in ArcticFox, the numbers that make up the curve are percentages, not wattages. As a result from this, each time when you decide to change the wattage setting on the mod by using the wattage up/down buttons on the mod, manual re-adjustment of the power curve will not be needed, thanks to ArcticFox firmware. This advantage is pretty astronomical IMO, as you'll save yourself the pain of having to keep dialing them in every time. Some people prefer to use Temperature Control mode on a mod with a chip that has good Temperature Control. But personally, I, prefer to build and use complex coil builds that don't gel well together with TC. Usually they are Nichrome 80, with multiple core wire strands and a wrap wire around them, which is what some people like to call 'exotics'. Personally, I, prefer to describe these kinds of coil builds as "a warm wet dense saturated flavorful vape".

Aegis Legend mod and Zeus X atty are a good pairing. Not so sure the Zeus X is the best choice for a new builder, but also not so sure that dual coils are the best choice for a new builder either. Coils need to be the same resistance, and installed so that they heat up at the same rate. There is a learning curve for most people with RTAs anyway.

Looking at it from a purely practical standpoint, if I were just starting now and had the requirements OP states, I'd get an Aegis Legend and an Augvape Intake RTA. The Intake is a lot easier to build than the Zeus X and gives a good vape and good flavor. If he does get a Zeus X, it is possible to build it with a single coil, and for starters I would definitely recommend that he do that.

The zues x should be able to run a single coil. Bit it needs a bunch of cotton to properly fill the wicking ports. I wouldn't recomend the x 4 a new builder as it even took me 2 wick jobs to na il l it when i first got it. I still say a dead rabbit rta. Its not at the top of the charts but it is a solid performer and so easy to build on and wick. Jmho

Yes, I'm running my Zeus X with a 4mm single coil. I knew it would need a big coil in order to have enough cotton to fill up those ports.

The thing flooded like a bitch the first time I filled it, but I think once the cotton had some time to expand, it's ok now. I'm about to refill it again and I will know for sure very shortly.

ETA: I filled it, and it's fine. I am not filling it all the way to the top, though, just to the top of the RBA housing.

I run dual 3mm id. And i still prime and let sit till expanded. Then take the cotton from when i thinned and fluffed and tuck in any spots lacking in the ports. But its a beast of an rta when rite.
For single coil i like the kylin mini.
