What wire for newbie for coil build

Hey guys/gals,

Kinda semi new to the vaping seen. Have been vaping for about 2 months, im currently using the geekvape aegis mini. I have just purchased the geekvape creed tank so i can carry a bit more juice, however, im knew to the coil building side of things.

After watching so many videos on you tube and googling away, im so confused with the ohms law and everything else i cant seem to get my head around. SO that led me to here, looking for some advice / help on what type wire to use ? in power mode im currently using Mesh x2 0.3ohm coils in my cerbrus & shield tank. But im trying to work out how to set up my creed tank.. any info / pointers would be highly appreciated.

cheers

Type of wire is personal preference. I use mostly Kanthal A-1 as I vape in wattage or VV modes. N80 and SS316 heat up and cool down faster. SS changes resistance based on it's temp though so it's better used in temp control.
Are you looking to buy ready made coils or make your own?
If making your own:

Start simple with single wire coils. Your tank takes 2. Use this calculator https://www.steam-engine.org/coil.html
Set the wire type you have
Put in your wire guage, just set the AWG side
Set it for dual coils
Set the ohms you want the final product to be
Set the diameter of the coils you want to make (3mm is a good starting point)
Set the leg length (this is the length of leg coming off the coil going to the posts in the tank)
It will tell you on the right how many wraps for each coil and what they will ohm out to.

For example, if you want .3 ohm's in the tank, the tool will tell you to make two .6 ohm coils. If you shoot for .5, it will say to make two 1 ohm coils.

You're using a regulated mod so ohms law isn't as necessary to know. You just need to know your mod's limit for how low you can build.

Hi there Creature0069,

Thanks for the quick informative reply! its much appreciated. I guess to start with, i'll be looking into just buying some pre-made coils to get me up and running with the creed tank. Is there a way to find out what the mods limit is ? im not trying to be to fancy, im happy to stay vaping at the 40w as i currently am with my other tanks. I guess im just slighly confused with the whole coil change, and what to go out an buy or what im looking for.. so to speak.. i hope this make some sense

For the mod, most any site selling them should list the specs for how low a build it will fire. Probably .05 or .08 as that seems what most current gen mods will do.

Do you have the tank yet? Most likely it will come with a pair of coils to get you started.

There are a LOT of options when it comes to buying coils. Most aren't very good. Like those 8 in 1 type coils packs. They work but they're just okay. The good thing about it though is good coils can last for months because you only have to rewick every so often instead of replacing coils and wick. So "expensive" pre made coils are still cheaper than sub tank coils.
There are even a few guys on this forum that make stellar coils.
Decent packs you can find on websites are the Geekvape 2 in 1 packs. They'll be called F208, F209, etc. They range anywhere from like $5-10 but you get like 8 coils and a coil tool. Those coils could last a year or more. They're probably the best "name brand" coils I've seen.

Just looked, your mini will fire down to .05 ohms so you'll be okay with pretty much any coils.

Did someone ask about coils?

Hi Creature,

Thanks for that, that was a little more helpful for me and a bit more easier to understand.. so i just done some looking around on the web, so something like this would be suitable for my current mod ?

also if i was to use this mod would i have to use the ohms calculator and manually input the settings etc ? as in volts / amps and stuff like that ? or would i just use it in power mode as per usual ?

cheers

Those coils will work.

No you won't need the calculator unless you're making your own coils. The ones you buy state what ohms they are. A pair of the coils in your link would come out to a .22-.23 in your tank. Well above the mods limit. You'll be fine running them in power mode.

Awesome thanks for that i feel like im getting a bit more of an idea about it now, so thank you for all your help and advice. Its greatly appreciated. So one last newbie question, what is the best way in power mode with such coils to work out what the best wattage in power mode would be to run at ?

Thanks again

Best wattage all comes down to preference. One way to get a decent starting point is after you screw it onto your mod, tap the fire button quick. The mod will read the ohms of the coil and show you the voltage it'll use for whatever wattage it's set at. I usually adjust wattage so it reads at about 3.5v and work up from there until it feels right for me. After you play around with a few different coil builds, you'll get a general idea of where to set wattage for specific ohms without doing that.

The beauty part of RTA's is that if you run it too hot and burn the wick, you can just rewick it instead of throwing the coil out due to burnt taste. ;)

I personally do not trust the ohm rating on any mass manufactured coil. I personally IMHO would only trust one of our VU resident builders to provide accurate specs on their builds.

Hey guys,

So i thought i would pop back to keep this thread updated.

Ive finally built my RTA Creed, however i seem to not be getting any flavour from it , well nothing i can taste that well other then a cotton'y type flavour. Here is a link to the premade coils i am using. And another link to the cotton i am using also. I also made sure to add a few drops of juice onto the cotton and coil also. Any advice is greatly appreciated as always, thanks in advance.

cheers

heya,

so just an update, ive rebuilt the coil but im now out of my premade coils. I am still not getting any flavour. Im starting to think it might be the juice im using ? the juice is purple aid by mad hatter. Im also sure i should be safe vaping at 35w on this regulated mod ? im pretty sure they were 0.4ohm coils also..i dont have much spare juice available at the moment, as i am running low so when my new juice arrives ill try a different juice and try again.

cheers

I am a new Builder. I do not have a drill or the equipment to make complex coils. I do however have a roll of 26 kg w ss316l. I can make single round wire coils. I can make parallel coils. And with the assistance of a pen with a pocket clip I can make Twisted coils. I can also use the Twisted coils with a single strand of the same wire and make a twisted staged coil. Now I will move on however maybe I will not. I get a great Vape from all of these variations as long as I follow the rules and make appropriate ohm coils for the intended application. It sounds boring. But give me a good pain and 12 in wire and I can whip you up a twisted coil that is better than any Twisted coil you can buy commercially manufactured. And The Taste is great as well. All that with the same spool of wire.

Hey ,

So just a quick update. To keep this thread updated for anyone else who has the same issues I did.

Turns out I had a bit of vapours tongue, because I’ve been using 2 kits lately with different flavoured e-juice. I am getting the flavour from my new build, although it doesn’t seem as “tasty” as my other kit with the different juice, my coils are still working.

So after a re-wick and a flavour change I should be all good from here on in. Just wanted to say thanks for the help and advice and when/if I’m looking for some more coils I’ll keep the posts above in mind.

Cheers

A good way to help with that is to try vaping some unflavored juice for a little while. Found I can vape unflavored juice nearly regular. I like simple single flavors at times. Currently, I'm vaping about 10% peppermint & 90% unflavored VG based nicotine solution. It's doing well for me.

The vaping unflavored lets you keep vaping if you need the nicotine, while letting your tongue "reset" itself. I mention a need of nicotine because many are former smokers whom vape for the nicotine. You could still desire continuing to vape, regardless. Not wanting to presume either way here.

Hey,

Thanks for that. That’s another thing I wasn’t aware of either so appreciate the reply

Cheers
