COPD and Vaping

For anyone that knows me, I've made no secret about being diagnosed with COPD in 2015 and finally trying vaping because of that diagnosis. I also worked as an OJT Respiratory Therapist from 2001-2008 and was licensed in respiratory in 2006 (grandfathered in). That background gave me a huge insight into the deaths of people smoking and things that could have been avoided if vaping has been presented as an option. I watched dozens of patients die under my watch because they couldn't quit that deadly habit!

My background with COPD and vaping has been so positive, that if I was working in the field today I'd recommend every single smoker with COPD to try vaping to stop smoking. I was able to quit the very first day I started vaping and that was because I had a great community of people that knew what I needed to beat the addiction. I started vaping with an 18mg nicotine liquid, and a mouth to lung tank setup. I'd failed (and almost died) with "acceptable" nicotine replacement products and drugs. Chantix had me on the brink of suicide!

Within a few months of vaping completely, I stopped coughing all the time, no longer needed inhalers and was able to exercise and sing again. My pulmonary function test after two years was almost unheard of in a person diagnosed with COPD, it's almost like I never smoked! For someone that smoked 30+ years, two packs of Marlboro red 100's a day, I can only say vaping was my miracle. I've talked to several people just like me with COPD that had similar results, so it wasn't just that I got lucky! My diagnosis of COPD came from Chronic Bronchitis. Since I quit vaping in 2015, I haven't had bronchitis or pneumonia. Prior to vaping, I was being diagnosed with pneumonia at least twice a year after 2014.

The bottom line is, even with COPD, vaping can make a DRAMATIC difference in your lung health and we should be promoting this for every smoker diagnosed with it.

My sister's experience has been similar to yours. It had been about 10 years since her COPD dx when she started vaping in about 2015. She is like a new person now, has been able to go back to work and support herself for the first time in about 20 years.

I love hearing stories like yours and even love more that it’s not unique. The flip side of course is I hate the government’s, and various other organizations, slander of vaping and worse yet their endorsement of terrible products that at best are a tremendous waste of money and at worst are fatal. It’s insane they say here try Chantix yet refuse to recommend vaping which has smokers quitting at unheard of rates with minimal risk to the patient. The idea with any medication is to weigh the risk of side effects to the benefit received and if the benefit outweighs the risks then it’s successful. My doctors understand and support my vaping but for these other doctors working for the Truth, CDC, FDA, American Lung Association, etc.,etc., took an oath which apparently they have no problem breaking. Maybe when they get to the pearly gates they can take some of that blood money they’re paid for their lies and get Saint Pete to sneak them into the kingdom. I have a feeling they are set up for a long fall though. That’s how I feel about all that at the moment.

Yes, down the line the lies and corruption are going to bite back. They’re not even very good lies unless you happen to know absolutely nothing about vaping. They’re using reverse logic. Unfortunately it’s working on the people who think the gov’t should save children (instead of parents parenting.)

Really glad to hear about vaping and COPD. Great news!

And did you by chance see how they are CHARGING people $100 to learn how to QUIT smoking with their failed ideas? That one really sat wrong with me.

I haven’t seen that and unfortunately I’m not surprised by it either. The people on the other side of this vaping debate seem to be ok watching smokers suffer and die of the various ailments smoking causes knowing damn well vaping greatly increases their chances of quitting successfully.

I bookmarked it for reference https://shop.freedomfromsmoking.org/FFSIndividual.html This is where they send you after visiting the lung association page to quit smoking. I wanted to throw up.

And they’re trying to seduce people with lower insurance rates! The only effective way to quit and to stay quit is vaping. The ALA knows this. Since BP or BT didn’t “invent” vaping and probably can’t trademark or copyright it now, they want to squash it. They’re pushing people back to smoking by pointing them to useless quitting methods.

I’ve been off smokes for going on 9 months by vaping. I tried lozenges, patches, even cigalikes. None of them worked. I was too afraid to try Chantix. My dh did and he couldn’t stand it. It was worse than smoking even with his COPD. He’s still dual using, but he’s cut his smoking by more than half by vaping. And his breathing is much better.

Wow only $99.99, and access to an online community of knowledgeable folks who are there to answer questions and give support. So a product that has been proven to cause serious problems and has little effect at helping people quit smoking.
Sorry but no thanks, I’ll take the VU forum which is full of knowledgeable folks to answer questions and give support. Oh and guess what...it’s free!!!! They accept donations but they aren’t necessary for access to this wonderful community. Not to mention we don’t pump out lies and misinformation to the community we serve. I have all the support I need and it didn’t cost me a Benji, F-off American Lung Association, you should be ashamed of yourselves.

Here's a funny ol' thing...

I quit smoking back in July of 2010. In late 2016 I took up vaping when my wife tried it to get off the cigs. It didn't work for her and I dropped it, myself, after several months. Then, about two months ago, primarily as a protest against the coming flavoured juice ban in Michigan, I took up vaping again.

Curious about some of the claims about vaping, I also bought a highly-rated pulse oximeter.

So I've been vaping for about two months, now. Probably gone through somewhere around 200-250ml of juice in that time. My blood oxygen level is, if anything, up! Was running around 95 when I started vaping. Now runs around 96.

Are you vaping 0mg juice?

Well, you might want to stock some nic for just in case, then. Unless you don’t mind quitting vaping or vaping no nic juice.
I can probably do without the nic. 3mg isn't much, and I'm not vaping all that much. 200-250ml in two months? That's less than 5ml/day. That being said: Next visit to my local DIY place I'll be picking up some 100mg nic.

I’m only telling you because you seem like a nice guy. And you’re a good addition to VU.
Aw, gee...
