Has anyone of you ever hit the sweet spot on any RDA or RTA the same way that the vape reviewers do ? It looks magical to me the way these people get such perfect flavor and clouds on their first builds on gear . ( Gear name not important ) NOT ME , it takes a few builds , a few wicks and A LOT of cursing to get good hits and so on .. Just curious to see how I can improve my techniques and where I am failing . Anyone ??

The coil position is very important.
if they are a little too high or low it throws the airflow off and can mute the flavor.

I have 3 go to builds that I use dependent on the rda. I also make it a habit of placing the coil roughly 2-3mm from the airflow, keeping the airflow centered at the coil. In some cases I nail it first time out, but in most some tweaking is involved. (Some RDAs have taken more work than others to nail down.)

Dont get cought up with what you SEE reviewers do. They are mostly just sales personnel nowadays, hocking each others endorsed products.

The better ones have played with the item for a few weeks before discussing it at any length. It's hard to take any reviewer seriously; especially, the ones that know less about a product than I do when they get on camera. If a person is opening the package for the first time on camera, how can you trust their knowledge of the product?

It usually takes me at least one trial build to get a feel for how the atty behaves and then adjust from there. Sometimes one or 2 more.

Except the Profile. That one took me1,234,879 tries.

Quite so. I just pulled a 5 year old cheapo back out, that already vaped good, pulled the coils up another mm or so, rewicked it and it's a night and day difference. Awesome flavor. Truly. In fact, I'm going to grab a few more at a buck and a half apiece in a couple days.
===========================================
Another thing that bugs me about many reviewers is how they build and wick the thing and then tell me how great the flavor is on the first 2 pulls. Dude. There's no way that cotton is broken in and I have enough experience at this point to know that it takes a little while for the flavor to really pop with fresh cotton.

Yes. Mostly or all of those have been single coilers.
For me it easier to get it right right outa the box for for single coil RDA's, and I have a few that the first time was a charm.
Then the single coil RTA's are a usual good to go first time, while some can take me a couple times > for coil type/position and wicking. For these usually the first time is at least good, but then adjust on the next rewick or build.
For duals, whether RDA or RTA, I don't build coils so I'm always rechecking to hit my resistance before building. Usually takes a couple times to move resistance up or down depending on the atty, coil placement, wicking. Dual coil RDA's I only have a couple since I'm mostly a single coiler. One was super the first time and no need to change anything(Asgard).
I don't get along as good with dual coil RTA's, usually takes a few. Probably because it's so much easier for me to get a fantastic vape w/1 coil.
Just an hour ago I cleaned and built a dual RTA I hadn't used in a while that I've built 3 times and it was good 3 times. This time I changed the coil type and id, moved the resistance up a little, and vaping it now with more wattage than I use on anything else, and WOW !!
My 2 mesh RTA's took me 3 wicks to figure out.

Helps to know your target resistance and how to get there.

Might help to find a responsible reviewer that vapes like you and kinda follow their lead as a guide.

I do admit I couldn't have pulled it off without watching multiple YouTube build video tutorials first, but still nevertheless I hit that sweet spot on my first RDA ever, the Wotofo Troll RDA 2, on the first try even before my first vaping month had passed, and that also included building the coils from the ground up with spools of round wire, my (newly bought back then) cordless drill, and some basic tools like fishing swivels, successfully on the first try also despite my having no coil building experience whatsoever back then. This all happened like 3 years minus 2 weeks ago. I've learned a lot since.

build1.jpg

It doesn't matter how good your coils are... if something is wrong about the positioning of your coils, the airflow setting, the wattage, or the wicking job, then it won't be in the sweet spot that's for sure.

Overall I agree with all of the above, and the better reviewers have tested the piece for a while...when a reviewer tests an an rba right out of the box it does not seem fair to me , but I listen to thr reviewers thoughts as to the construction of the atty. And yes I have had a good experience right out of the box. Recently I tried the Kelpie and used the supplied coil, which I usually ignore. It was perfect for me, other coils I have tried since have been good but not like the OG.

One thing I've learned, that's very important for me, is never trying a new juice with a new atty. I've tossed a few new attys to the side because their first build seemed to perform horrendously. But it turned out that it was only the new juice that I used in the atty that was horrible.

^^^^^^ This.

I have far more trouble with dual coils than singles. And of that trouble, much of it has to do with ramp-up time. Sometimes I have to change a build out completely because there's just too much metal in the two coils and I don't have the patience to wait for it, and I'm not upping my wattage to 80 just to get the coils hot.

Position of the coil in relation to the airflow, keeping the track of air clear of cotton, as well as the proportion of the coil and cotton to the free space inside the RDA, all those things should be checked as the build happens, just as a matter of routine. And remember that the rules don't always apply - sometimes air just does its own thing. I ended up with air whooshing along the side of a single coil (that is, instead of hitting it directly, head on) in a C2MNT clone and it vapes great. Go figure. The suction created by your draw on the RDA is going to pull the air where you need it, regardless of how your coil sits or where the air hits it, so imo the air passing across the coil for the longest distance possible, and through open space for the shortest distance possible, is going to produce better vapor and flavor. But hey, I'm still a relative noob. Whadda I know? :)

That Nordic guy on yourtube (Morton? maybe? cannot remember) has some very interesting videos on how air acts in RDAs. His examples are crude but appear to be applicable. The biggest lesson I learned was that air goes straight until it hits something; it doesn't necessarily bend toward the drip tip after entering the RDA. It explains why RDAs like the CSMNT and Drop could produce decent flavor even though their AF doesn't exactly line up with the coils.

Morten Oen is his name. With the CSMNT the airflow does line up with the coils, at least it does after you line up the coils with the airflow, which is what I always do (pics below)... it also explains why the Drop RDA is not for me. Having the airflow improperly lined up reminds me of trying to smoke a normal cigarette that's got a hole in its side just before the filter. It simply never works. The optimal distance between the air holes and the coils is something that Morten also talked about in at least some of his videos, and, he also talked about how the air speed plays an equally important part. So the reason why some people think none of it matters is often because they are never going to get enough air speed, be it because they vape at such a low wattage that there's nowhere nearly enough underpressure being created inside the chamber of their RDA or because they don't understand the simple fact that, with most 24mm/25mm dual coil RDAs, having the air holes completely wide open is going to suck more air in at the sacrifice of the air speed. So they are never going to feel the oomph, like, they've been smoking cracked cigarettes their entire lives, it's just what they will always continue to assume is right so they remain unaware that they're missing out on something, and they can't ever be argued with, as you can't fix stupid.

I do pretty much every time. I use the same builds the first time using something. It's much easier to test flavor if you use a build & cotton you're familiar with. And after using enough attys, you basically know where to place the coils to get the best flavor once you've looked at the deck.

First chance I get, I'll try it your way, and we'll see if stupid can indeed be fixed. If only I had been smart enough to realize how stupid I am, I'd have known to seek advice from The Great and Powerful Oz.

I didn't say you're stupid. Some people just don't like oomph so it is still only a matter of personal preferences, but my point was that a lot of people never even tried to find out what exactly ARE their own personal preferences, and, often (but certainly not always) it's because they're just too stupid to even want to ever admit.

Be cool guys , it's not a pissing contest here . Look at it like a means to improve upon first time fails , and a way to call out bullshit that come with trying new gear !! Keep them coming , just be nice . We are all here for the love of vaping ..

I never have any issues with side airflow atties on the first build, because the position of the coil is almost the same on all of them.
Bottom and even more so top airflow atties are much more demanding though imo. Placing the coil too far away from the air intakes doesn't create enough pressure which in turn mutes the flavor, but if you position the coils too close, it chokes the air off.

For the most part I can get it down pretty quickly, used enough now to look at most and figure out how things should be...some attys do take some figuring out though ...coil ID, coil type, position, Wicking cuts and can be a ballache to dial in

I’ve always found it best to take pics as I go ...then once I’m happy I’ve dialled an atty I have a reference point from different angles when I come back to it at a later date or switch between gear

latest RTA I purchased I’m struggling with Taifun GT4 ...watching some of the guys on YouTube out the box saying best thing since sliced bread...not my experience so far it’s excellent certainly in quality dept but just good in flavour dept...still trying to find its sweet spot 3 builds in so far ...honestly prefer my kaees solomon v1 at this point though haha

Yes, exactly. If the area located between the air hole and the coil is too narrow, then due to localized pressure buildup occurring in that area the airflow will be squeezed out from there causing large portions of the airflow to be redirected away from the coil and be distributed more towards adjacent open space thus not reaching the downwind side of the coil or reaching it only indirectly, that is, reaching it only partially, through the chaotic weakening effects resulting from nearby turbulence.

As for not creating enough pressure, actually this is referring to the pressure caused by the airflow colliding with the coil. The impact force is what creates this pressure, and is therefore largely determined by the speed at which the air is slamming into the coil's exterior surface... see here:

Think of it this way, all is not lost since this GT4 is on my radar. So you have a probable customer if you decide to let it go. ;)
I think I have myself just about convinced. The only thing for me is that I hear from the same sliced bread YT'ers that the nano kit improves flavor and I'm convinced I'd have to have both the atty and kit for around $225+. 25mm is a good size, the machining is exc, the af looks great, JFC, it has style it has grace :giggle:. But it's a big bullet to bite without knowing for sure.

So I looked at clones. There's a good og/clone compare out there and the clones [Ulton or ShenRay] measure up good for quality, workmanship,,,,and flavor and vape supposedly the same, so they say. But, the nano kit clone is elusive. So atm it's either RTA/og or clone w/ og nano kit at over 2x the cost of the cloned RTA.
Or slap leather. I'd rather do the pocket friendlier $30 clone/clone to see if I like it enough to be a $225 lifer. So I think I'll look a couple more days for a clone nano kit, and or see if a hardware add gets any response.

What version did you get? Pure Glass?

haha sorry bird has already shotgunned dibbs ...plan on keeping it though I want to unlocks it’s full potential at least, don’t get me wrong it performs but I had stupid high expectations it was going to be “the one”

yeah I got the shorty version ...bought mine from creme de vape ...taifun came out with their own shorty kit (before that only steam tuners was available) this is better imo

Machining is simply top notch ...
I plan on giving it another go soon might try to go with a 2.5mm coil instead

The Elder Dragon comes to mind as well. I tossed in one of the coils out of the box and got crazy good flavor. I ended up putting it on my Feedlink and it rocked on there (direct output squonk).

There's a tool to cut your legs at length as well. Just mount it and wick it and your in buisness.

I been hearing the steam tuners shorty was best. If I buy one it will the the Pure Glass like the one you have, then decide on the nano. While staying the same height as pure, the nano has a smaller chamber, which also increases capacity from 2 to 4.3ml.

and it promises me it will put its big-girl waterproof pants on and behave. :)

The Fireluke is a huge disappointment, using the coil that came with it (0.15 ohm single mesh).
Lmao

I had the Fireluke Mesh (or now the Fireluke M) tank before it was released. They asked me to review it and yeah, those coils need to break in. I remember now. I was really inpressed at the time (start of 2018?). It was the ONLY subohm mesh tank for a short time. I hadn't heard of using screen mesh as a heating element at the time. Anyways, it should taste better after a tank or two. Those coils lasted me a very long time as well. I still have some packs of those but haven't used the tank in a good while.

Here is good feedback about why I went pureglass over the steam tuners Nano

https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/threads/taifun-gt-discusion.431876/page-273#post-21443431

thing is everything just works as you’d expect from original manufacturer ...no reverse threading...chunky glass tank....knurling...mess free refilling...no mucking about trying to get original top cap as well for ultem....510 fits no probs taking top cap off

ok you sacrifice a couple of ml but that nano tank will need to be pretty thin to cater for 4ml

Before the pureglass came out and GT4 was tallboy only for sure would have got the Nano kit ...just dont see the point now rather have the glass tank if I’m honest and refill a little more often

unfortunately chambers aren’t compatible to swap them between them both

I'd like the all the og parts working as expected as well. Matching knurling, fill method. Reverse threads don't bother me so much, having any seepage because of the flush fill would. A little more care filling and probably a wipe every now and then.
I've seen pure owners buying using nano and say how good the flavor is. But no real remarks of comparing the 2.

It's as tho pure's bell/chimney was sized to accommodate TPD. Could maybe have a smaller bell and maybe shorten the tank. That would at least eliminate any doubt on flavor improvement of nano.

I got a clone Drop RDA and i find it is like perfect but then I vape a different flavour and it's not as good all of a sudden. I never rewhick when changing flavours.. I make sure I choose the eLiquid that is the most clear. Stay away from dark eLiquid.

Cool video. I'm going to look for more. That one makes me think twice about the way I've done things.

That video is absolute genius. I would never have believed what it plainly shows.

I've added cotton in lower open spaces in two of my RDAs, as an experiment (Axial and TVL Reload). It works. Flavor is boosted, air is less turbulent. Clouds are larger and heavier. Simply brilliant.

Better late than never. I come around eventually. Thanks for sharing this.

One of my favorite Norwegian movies is Kraftidioten (2014). Cold Pursuit, the remake (from Hollywood) of this dark movie, is not half bad, but not nearly as good as the original, and, I watched the original with Dutch subtitles, as I don't speak Norwegian... I just don't understand why most Americans always want voiceovers whenever they finally decide to watch a foreign language movie. Voiceovers are a surefire way to destroy a perfectly good movie IMO.

Not everything he has said is matching my own personal experience, though. Specifically, his videos on the particular subject of how densely packed the cotton needs to be on the inside of my coils don't factor in how juice behaves when the coils are heated, and the juice is boiling, and, with side airflow RDAs, it can happen that the flavor gets somewhat muted if the center of the coils is positioned at the same height as the center of the air holes so, if that's the case, lifting the coils ever so slightly up higher usually does work in spite of what the experiment in the video is showing.

I hate voice overs. Two of my close freinds said they hate subtitles. Voice overs ruin it I think. It takes away from authenticity.

I can tolerate subtitles a lot easier than voiceovers.

Remember those horrible overdubbed martial arts movies from back in the 70s? Omg! Hysterical! (You may not be old enough, I don't know, but believe me, they'd crack you up.)

Hey, greetings from bali, i am a newbie here, wanna learn something new, i have the c2mnt clone, but never find a good placing coil to get the flavour, my friend own the authentic, using the same height and coils but the taste are never the same, would you like to share ur setting? 😊 Thanks

I think if you reread it, her settings are there in the context. I'll quote the relevant section below.

The suction created by your draw on the RDA is going to pull the air where you need it, regardless of how your coil sits or where the air hits it, so imo the air passing across the coil for the longest distance possible, and through open space for the shortest distance possible, is going to produce better vapor and flavor.

You need to follow the example she offers. Ensure your air flows over the coil for the longest distance & for the shortest distance of void space. In simple terms you want air on the coil but not much in the chamber itself.

I find I do well using a Wasp Nano RDA. The chambers on these are very small. Airflow comes in from both sides and can be reduced like a funnel to directly hit the coil. I may leave an opening of roughly 2 mm on each side for air to come in.

Figure it would be about the same using the style of RDA you're using. I know it's similar for a couple of other small chambered RDA I use. It even helps in a larger chambered Advken Gorge RDA I use.

Yes, a lot of vaping relies upon technique. And yes, you need to experiment a bit to "get it" for yourself. Apologies it is like that but this is what is meant when we say, "the way for you to vape right is the way you vape right", or "the best way to vape for you is the way you think best".

Oh, and be prepared. That "way" can switch up on you from time to time too. *chuckles* You might for instance go to a different altitude which has an effect.

Thanks, it means i need to positioned the coil near or directly hit by the AF, and let the chamber do the rest? gonna try now,
Agains thanks for the advise,

And magic, at first i think its looks ugly because i need to bend the coil until near AF Hole, but now, it taste greaatttt!!!

From now on i can apply to any atomizer, as long as i know how the chamber, coil type and the airflow, because it was a clone the airflow doesnt has same angle entering the chamber, i put around 2/3 coil body from the af hole, now it taste sweet and boosted Throat hit

Ha ha! Yep, there you go.

Yep, yep, yep. Now you're "cooking with gas" as is said. Once you have some basic understanding about technique/s you can apply them to near all the atomizers.

You will still run across some that resist your best techniques. For you those just might not be what you want to keep. Someone else might know another trick, or two though.

Use what works for you and don't worry too much over what doesn't. You can always ask questions too. :)

And I apologize if I seemed to be writing/talking like a jerk in the last post. I was trying to help you understand what @nadalama was saying though.
