Collingwood president Eddie McGuire and Tony Jones in fiery exchange over AFL membership refunds
By Chris De Silva - 31 minutes ago
Tony Jones and Collingwood president Eddie McGuire have a fiery exchange over whether McGuire will issue club membership refunds
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire and Nine News reporter Tony Jones have been involved in a fiery exchange when Jones pushed McGuire about membership refunds.

With the AFL going through an unprecedented financial crisis due to the coronavirus outbreak, McGuire urged supporters to stick with their clubs, but refused to guarantee that Collingwood members who seek a refund would indeed receive one.

McGuire maintained that clubs would die without the continued support of their respective members, touching back to the very beginning of the Collingwood Football Club in the 1890s.

"It's as simple as this: if you don't have members, you don't have a club," he told Nine News.

"A club that has no members is a memory, so we need our members to stick with us as much as they can.

"If our supporters or anyone gets into financial hardship, speak to us. We are there together because members are the club.

"It is not as if we're privately owned ... this is all about sticking together through tough times.

"You know the history of the Collingwood Football Club, we were founded in the darkest times of depression in the 1890s and got through by building the stands at Victoria Park with sustenance."

However, Jones, who has been vocal about clubs refunding fans' memberships, was not impressed by McGuire's answer and pressed the Magpies president, when the heated exchange ensued.

Here is the full dialogue between Eddie McGuire and Tony Jones:

Tony Jones: If a member comes to you now and says, 'I've lost both my jobs, I need my money back', you would say?

Eddie McGuire: Tony, you've got to listen to me, mate. We are in it together. We look after our members, they are a part of our family. Tony, if you came to me and said I need a loan, do you reckon I would help you? Of course we would. What we don't want to do is have a run on clubs because the membership is keeping us alive at the moment. We've got no visibility. I came in tonight and I saw a kid seven years of age walking along in his Essendon jumper and I looked at him and I thought, he's probably a generational Essendon supporter. He's got so much to look forward to. If you believe that the clubs and the AFL football is important, please stick with us at the moment. You're not listening to me Tony. You're trying to get a headline, and this is what we don't need at the moment.

TJ: No mate, I'm not trying to get a headline. I'm trying to get an answer.

EM: I'm giving you an answer Tony!

TJ: If a member comes to you and says they want their money back, will you give the money back?

Tony Jones explains why AFL clubs should issue refunds to members who want their money back in the wake of cancelled games
EM: Tony, I just said to you, if you've got financial hardship speak to your club. We're there to help you, we always do. We do this year-in, year-out with people who've got financial hardship. What I'm saying to you though, Tony, is that this is more than just a transaction. This is people who love their club and it means more to them. Now Tony, do you want to hear what the answer is, or do you want to keep asking questions?

TJ: We're running out of time, but you can love your club without actually putting your hand in your pocket too, Eddie.

EM: Tony, if we don't have enough people putting their hand in their pocket, there will be no club, it's as simple as that.

TJ: OK. Unfortunately there's a lot of empty pockets, Ed.

EM: Yeah, and they'll be looked after, Tony. Don't make this into people taking money out of people's pockets. Don't wind me up with a smart a-- last-liner. This is desperate stakes and don't try and make a headline or make a fool out of me. When people need help, they will get it, but they must stick with their supporters.

TJ: I'm not trying to make a headline Eddie.

If no refund I’d stick a woke koala down their shorts.

my new hero animal now. Rabid raccoons with herpes just don’t measure up anymore.

corn husks have all blown away but I sent you a big box of really dried out corn cobbs for your TP issue.
Use GENTLY.

I don't know if a koala with a std is more heroic, but I'll take your word on it.

Cobbs are good - use all sides, rinse, wash, and we're ready to go again.

What is there to do at Lowe's at 4:00am, besides watering the plants in the garden department?

I move and stock lumber/concrete/drywall and top stock all the extra bunks of lumber and such. Doing it at 4 before we open means I can put the petal to the metal on the forklift. I’m the only person on my half of the building at that time.

The only living person.

Particularly active this morning.

Eddie always makes me shake my head mate. And you know I'm a Collingwood supporter. Here is a bit of my history. I grew up in Gladstone Park. In the Broady Boys days. We were just across the valley from Broady. Broadmeadows, the valley, Gladstone Park. Cant get any closer. I knew plenty of the Broady Boys, me and my mates went there often. Was the closest train station. Olsen Place, crazy area, but had mates there and often went there. 80's they had their shop windows guarded by cyclone wire! But dont get me wrong, even though we went there and had Broady Boy mates, we were not into the gang fights and violence like them. When things went nuts we stayed away. Saw a lot of crazy stuff. But here is this. Eddy wanna be, over and over makes himself out to be because as a kid he lived there to be like a Broady Boy gang member. What an utter joke. Nobody I knew even knew him, no Broady Boy knew him, and even now I still know one and he laughs at the idea of Eddy associating his time there with them. He was nothing but a private schooled nerd that was fully insulated from anything to do with them. His references to them I can say are 100% wanna be fantasy to give himself a false tough guy rep. He was then and is now as far as that era goes an utter nobody.

@Hawkizefan

apparently the amish in iowa didn't get the memo, and are having huge horse auctions, or something?

i guess the amish are a bit sheltered from facebook though

the Amish are god’s chosen and immune to the Rona.
And their women are the hottest......in a “wrap it in some burlap” kinda way.

they live like it’s 1850. Horse and buggy, no media, etc....
I’m sure that all they have heard is word of mouth about what’s going on and are probably distancing their groups from everybody else...but in groups nonetheless. They’re good people....just in their own world for the most part.

Well.....not really sticky....stinky......I’m a stinky wicket.
Not so much a wicket but more of a widget.
I’m a stinky widget.
Ummm...stupid, not stinky. Stupid widget.
Idget....not widget.
I’m a stupid idget

I’m BORED.........

Did you trim the shrubbery and cut the grass already? Or, you can rehearse your forklift movements, so you can re-stock tomorrow morning in style.

my forklifting skills are being abused this week.
Normally get 2-4 building material trucks a week.
I got 5 on Monday.....2 today and at least 1 tomorrow.
Very few things can stay outside in the “bullpen”...like concrete block and pressure treated lumber, but everything else has to come inside.
I’m in the middle of a 25 lbs. of shiate and only a 5 lb. shiate bag to put it in dilemma. I usually go weeks at a time without having to engage with the top dog store manager but today she apparently felt compassionate and decided to visit the slum side of the store. (I always say that we are the red headed stepchildren of Lowe’s). She stood there for a full 30 seconds trying to comprehend what she was seeing then asked me where I was going to put all of “that stuff”. Before I could tell her I had an idea where to put it, my immediate manager jumped in (to save me I’m guessing...cuz she knows me pretty well) and told her I had a plan. After the store manager left I looked at my manager and said you know my plan is to shove as much of that crap as I can in the back corner ant the rest in aisle 50.

good times.

on a bright note...my coworker broke the panel saw today.
Take that you shiplap biotches. Hope it’s broke all pandemic summer long.

and I’m still bored. Whose turn is it to entertain me this week?

You want one of my warehouse guys? One sits on his 'lift facing one wall. When he gets tired of that view he turns around and looks at the other wall. Every so often he'll drive up and down the aisles to check if any of the moving crates or pallets have decided to move by themselves.
The other one will move pallets from one location to a better spot, then do laps from the front to the back. The best is when he comes into the office to ask for help in finding a pallet that he most likely moved the day before.

We got word from our top dog manager(s) that we have to "watch" our employee's hours, since business is slowing down. Those two plus our almost ex-gm's wife that's in our office our on the top of my list for reduced hours. I'm salaried, but I'd be glad to open up at 6:00am and leave after 8 hours, but they would have to find some other dummy to lock up the warehouse and yard.

GREAT times . . .

Go to the tools section in aisle 6 and grab a circular saw to fix the panel one. If you can't macgyver it, I'm sure you'll be happy to do free hand cuts for your customers. Peeps with the red apron do that kind of stuff, right?

Me too

Typical though that I was barracking for the senior black lab, and the younger yellow one won

Story of my life

yeah, me too.
But the older one totally played it wrong. Got cocky and didn’t protect the bone properly.
Lots of whispering out there that the game has passed her by and that she should retire to avoid more embarrassment.
Maybe she should look into the kibble nibble league. Not the dog eat dog international group but a less intense local league.
