Hello out there.

Although I can't predict how I'm going to feel in a few weeks if this keeps up, for now I'm still here, taking it a day at a time, and doing pretty well with it all. I hope you and your family are as well.

I do recognize that I'm very lucky in all of this. Overall, things could be much worse for me. I know they are much worse for many people. There are so many people suffering right now for so many different reasons, from job losses to families separated to sick loved ones. It is easy at the moment to get sucked into the negativity, into the despair of not knowing when this will end and what the world will look like when it does. It's a slippery vortex, and one that only works to perpetuate the negative energy swirling around out there right now.

The truth is, we don't know what is going to happen. That can be very scary; we want answers, we want the contentment of knowing. But there should be something very familiar and comforting in the unknown, two somethings really. One, it's something we've all faced before and have overcome, because really life is just a series of events and occurrences, challenges and problems whose outcomes we are unable to see at the outset. We have gotten through not knowing before, and we will again. And two, since the result is unknown, it is as equally likely from here as any other outcome that everything will work out in the end.

What we can do to help make this time more positive and easier to get through for ourselves and for everyone else is to find ways to plant seeds of joy and compassion instead of fear and anger, fighting against that negativity vortex instead of feeding it. Doing this only makes our own joy grow.

When my dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer when I was 10, he was drawn to Buddhism. Something that they believe in is that you must give life to get life, and so my dad made a habit of buying worms from bait shops and letting them go in gardens and parks and on lakeshores. It doesn't mean that magically their life force will be transferred to you and save you if you are sick. The point is that by showing compassion and love and kindness, the experience of freely giving these away will enrich your life, give it meaning, and attract those same things back to you. The same principle applies here: give joy to get joy.

It is so good for your soul and your heart to feel joyful, and one of the best ways to do that is by spreading it ourselves. Our mental and emotional health impact our physical, we know this. So in this time of great mental and emotional upheaval, let's support our own health by doing what we can to support that of those around us. Send care packages to friends and family, make phone calls, have Skype dates, sew face masks, plan little surprises for those you are quarantined with, do something for others that puts a smile on your face and theirs. There is so much we can do even while stuck in our homes that can have a huge impact on someone's day.

How will you plant joy today?

Happy Healing ❤️
