Nic in the freezer

Going to be breaking up 2 liters of nic into glass bottles to store in the freezer for the first time. Any preferences on lid style? Screw on, cork, snap on, etc. Also, I think I read some put a layer of serain (sp?) Wrap over the top? Good Idea or no?

I use polycone plastic lids for my nic, no saran wrap. Some wrap plumber tape as around the outside of lid as an added layer of protection.

I've been using amber glass "packer" bottles, 100ml, and whatever plastic caps are displayed to go with them for quite a while. I like them because they're wide mouth. I do keep one working bottle in the fridge, the rest I store in the box the glass bottles were shipped in. They have dividers in them, so I leave those in there. I label the caps with the date I got it, the box with the lot #, just in case.

I just assumed clear bottles would be the way to go? Are you all using darker bottles to allow less light in?

I use 120 ml clear boston round bottles with poly cone lids. Like clear so I can see if any yellowing. Using 4+ ye old nic now and clear as the day I got it. I also put the bottles in plastic tubs with lids to prevent breakage and such. Fill to bottom of neck to minimize air in bottle, it will not freeze and expand.
PG and vg must get lots colder than a regular deep freeze to freeze around -60F I think.
Using 120 ml bottles allows less air time with the nic as you use from it which reduces nic oxidation. as opposed to using larger bottles. I actually fill an amber 30 ml working bottle as needed and put the 120 back in the freezer.

Thank you. I was going to ask about fill amount. I really need the freezer for nothing else, so space is not an issue. Was thinking 60 or 120 ml bottles myself.

I get 100 nic and put it into small 50ml dark poison bottles. They seal really well naturally being for poison. Fill to near top. I have a couple of litres in my freezer. More managable in the small bottles. Then put in zip lock bags. The ones I take from the freezer to use I let come to room temp before opening them, use some then back in the normal fridge section. When to be used again go through the temp adjustment thing again and so on. Was told that will minimise condensation issues. I also before using when it comes to room temp give it a good shake and let it sit till the bubbles subside. The shake I was told makes sure that if any nic seperation occured is taken care of.
Now I do this from advice and if any of it has no point I am not sure but it all made sense when I was given the advice. To date its all been good and constant quality wise with all the nic still crystal clear 3 yrs on.

@Smigo good catch on the shaking after warmup.
I had forgotten to mention that.
Hi. You do that too obviously. I can't recall where I got all that info from but when I got my nic, seriously an effort to do so here in Oz legally which I wanted to do and did, but as info here at the time was very scarce I searched and read dozens of posts all over the place and came up with or settled on the way I do it now. I think I weeded out the good from the bad info. Which I count as a win. :)

Those poison bottles are great, they’re really old fashioned looking. I wish I could find them here. Good idea!

Never had mine in the freezer before either, or problems. But never tried to store 10+ years worth either.

Oh it will pass, they will want MO MONEY after all of this corona pandemic devastation.
Just my opinion of course.
Repubs in KY are pushing a big tax on vaping. est 50 million annual tax revenue. Not sure what happens after Sept 9 though.

virtually none in government are for vaping.

So, got it stored. Kinda weird, anyone seen this or have an idea. Nic was crystal clear going in. Bottles new and well washed. But has a bit of a yellowish tint once in? Not sure how much pic will show but.....

It looks like it may be starting to oxidize.
It could just be from the little bit of oxygen that got in when you poured it in to those bottles.

That's kinda what I thought, but the whole idea of the freezer was to keep oxidizing out, lol. Guess I will just keep an eye on it and see that it doesn't oxidize more?

Very good. I have a 25-30 yr stockpile though. LIke for rest of life.

I still have no idea if the house or senate nic tax bills will pass. afik they are not dead just ignored for the time being.

https://vaping360.com/vape-news/86114/outrageous-nicotine-tax-bill-passes-house-committee/

It's even better than that.
You have something that could potentially become worth 20 - 50 times the price that you paid for it in the very near future.
Nicotine today is like how bitcoin was in 2016
I wish I had a bigger freezer.;)

One day you may need to sell a liter or two if you need a new car or something:D

@Creature0069 is correct.
The clear bottles can cause the oxidation to worsen if you are opening and closing the freezer a lot.
You can wrap the bottles in something to help block the sunlight.

Yep if a lot of door flapping and the light hits them.
Mine is in plastic tubs in the bottom of deep freezer with stuff on top of them.

How long has any one bottle sat before being opened and used?

I know what SHOULD be done, but don't have the space or a separate freezer for it.

So, I took my recent large purchase, and just took a peek to see all was well. it's in a sealed non-clear LDPE bottle (like they use for bleach), sealed in plastic, in a sealed heavy cardboard box.

Sealed the box back up and put it in the back of a hall closet that stays about the same temp year-round and it's covered up as well. If it oxidizes some, oh well...I like the flavor of old nic actually. xD

Eventually, I may divide it up into smaller Boston rounds, but for now it's just fine in there.

I recently took a 250ml brown glass Boston Round out of there and it's fine...from 2016. Vaping it now.

That's a long time. I haven't read of many who have done that. However, many probably have. The only thing I know for sure is that some of the larger sellers of nic recommend putting it in a freezer. I guess the only way to know if it has had a negative impact would be if you tested it.

what do you mean by "crystal clear going in" ? as in, when was it clear ? when you were pouring it ?

yeah, but the thing is = selling it. would you buy nic from someone you didn't know ? maybe you would, a lot of people would not. but then these days, who knows.

There are threads on ECF about that going back a decade. :)
A lot of testing by a chemist guy...can't recall his name ATM.

I have e-liquid that is from 2011 though...BWB 555, 36mg

Yeah, was clear when pouring it.

ok. i bet it always was that color. mine is that color. when pouring, there is less of it, so you can't see the color in it. when there is an amount, like your bottle, then you can see the color. in a 1ltr glass bottle it would look even darker and/or more colorfull.

I think so too. I took it out of the freezer, and it is a bit less pronounced. I think the color of the freezer walls is adding to it as well.

There you go, some actual proof that nic doesn't degrade to the point of being useless. We need more of that. Thanks.

newer fridge ? LED lights can really bring out detailing. thats how i found the corrosion on my new mod, couldn't see it otherwise.
btw, i topped my bottles to the tippy-top, a little came out as i capped em = basically no air. does it make a diffence, who am i to say. i figure it can't hurt.

No, really old fridge. Early 70's I'm guessing, lol. Probably not the most efficient, but a beast of a workhorse :D I filled em up, but the front bottle is just what was left= not full.

FAIK, most of the discussion these days is about appearance and taste. People want absolutely clear stuff that doesn't taste like tobacco. o_O
If that is your goal, I'd say use synthetic nic or maybe nic salts. Both are pricey and I've not tried them.

Back in the day, when we vaped 18mg+ and it was mostly tobacco and other strong flavors, it wasn't such a concern.

I still vape 14mg and still mostly tobaccos, some fruity stuff, with only a few 'dessert' types that might be more affected by a strong-tasting nic.

Found some of the ancient threads. Kurt is the guy I'd mentioned, a chemist by trade.

This post in particular. Unfortunately, I think his main posting may have been moved or gone.

I could care less if it's not clear as long as it don't stink like fish and it gives me a buzz. ;-)
