My 50mg/ml base turned red. Does anyone know why?

So my supplier gave me a 10ml bottle of 99.9% pure nic to try. (I know, very dangerous. Don't worry, I have full lab gear.)

When I mixed it with my USP PG in a glass jar to make it 50mg/ml and left it for a couple of days it had a reddish tint to it.

The supplier told me that this sometimes happens. They tell me not to worry because my density is high, it is common. Has this happened to anyone? Does anyone know why?

Any help would be appreciated.

I think it happens because of oxidization.
Mine hasn't turned reddish but but it turned a darker color.
Almost a light amber.
Light and air exposure are usually the main things that will cause nic to discolor.
That's why folks store in dark bottles or in dark cabinets and such.

Simply my opinion though.
I could be way off
well... I am off. I just don't know if I'm off on this.

Hi, I noticed that this is your first post and that you have a Taiwan based ecig site as part of your user name. If you are a vendor, please post your deals in sales and promotions. VU has had a lot of vendors come in as VU members and post questions regarding pure nic, and other products and then proceed to do their sales pitch in the thread with other "members" touting the ecig site. We understand that style of marketing and are not too keen on it.

I understand your concern zamazam. i can assure you that it is not my intent. If you see me promoting my site you can tell the mods to delete me right away.

The truth is that e-cigs are not aloud in Taiwan. I am just trying to learn more about diy.

It sickens me to think that others have soiled the path for all of us.

Thank you for watching out for our fellow vapers.

What Fishee said. It can go from light yellow to reddish or even brownish. As long as there are no floaties and it tastes OK in your recipes, it's most likely fine.

Having never mixed with pure nic, I'm not about to go into mixing with it. It's not something I'm personally thrilled about having discussed, but that's MY personal opinion only.

The experience I have with 100mg/ml nic has been dependent on the company I've gotten it from. I've had 100mg/ml mixed down to a 13mg base turn pink or light amber, even being sealed, in a dark cabinet, away from light. From another company, same concentrations, it stays crystal clear. The one that changed a bit, definitely had a harsher feel to it on inhale, more peppery taste, but was ok to vape. Sure, it affected the taste to some degree. Some don't like that at all, some don't mind it in the least.

Yep. Oxidation.

The downside to using pure nic for the DIY'er to make a nicotine base is stirring without mixing in O2. It's very important to mix/stir well but if the stirring method mixes in tiny air bubbles(or even big bubbles) the nic will oxidize faster.

I think in the labs when they cut down pure Nic for vapers it's done in an oxygen free type enclosure, and then sealed.
The stronger the NIC is, the quicker it will oxidize.
Just a logical guess here, but I may be wrong.

Everyone, thank you for your input. I feel much better now about using it with my DIY. I was so worried about handling this stuff that I went and purchased gloves, goggles, a n95 mask and lab coat. Maybe I was over thinking it, but just wanted to be safe.

I guess that it must have been the oxygen that caused it to turn reddish. I am vaping it now and it seems fine.

Thanks again,

Bill

Considering what you were working with, you CAN'T over think it. Do you have a nic testing kit? I highly recommend testing for nic mg, especially with what you mixed with.

" Do you have a nic testing kit?"
Not yet. I need to find one soon though. The good news is that everything is fine. I haven't died from vaping my new liquid with the nic solution. :)
Thanks everyone for your input.

I wish I could find where I saw the tests done, but I remember seeing somewhere that even heavy oxidation of high nic juice had negligible effect on nic content. I think it may have been years ago during the Johnson's Creek "OMG My Juice Turned Red and We're All Gonna Die Debacle."

Nic does not gain strength when it sits. If anything it loses strength. The red/orange color is from UV light. Some juice/nic base get a yellowish or brownish color to them. It is still fine to use as long as it is not expired. If you keep extra you have in the freezer it will keep past its due date. Also keep your Nic in a cool dark spot when not in use and/or in amber bottles. I buy Nic in bulk. When I put this in the bottle it is in, it was clear. That is what 60 days give or take will do when it is in a clear bottle with moderate light hitting it. It is still fine to use. The smell may become more pungent too. My Nic comes in a amber bottle and I keep it in a cupboard above my fridge. It is still clear after 8 months.

Light and if o2 in it when you mixed it.. Double damage.

I sometimes mix up a batch of 100mg from pure and mind you, this is under a noble gas, and let it sit out covered to keep the gas in and within 24-48 hours due to light it turns a nice honey yellow then after another few weeks to brown. I cant say i have ever seen mine, or others for that matter turn "RED"
I forgot to read, is it PG base or VG base. VG is simply a terror to nicotine. I can mix up PG and VG from the same pure bottle and the VG almost always comes out a slight yellow, ever so slight, but still to my eye, noticeable. PG, clear as water.
