I built my kayfun lite today,i put a dual coil in it,i took my drill bit and bent them up so they were almost touching each other over the air hole,,,I used 30 ga wire with 6 wraps and put silica in it for wick,it came out to 0.85 ohms,,,,I use a nemesis clone with a 35amp battery,,,,,so far its hittin like a champ,,tons of vapor, not eating up battery power to bad like i thought it would.

6wraps of 30ga chimney build, vapes like a champ and around 8ga. Gonna have to try a dual coil later but it tastes great either eay

The best build I had was a .5 ohm dual coil…. But it jacked up my insulator and discolored my positive mounting block.. Guess my KayFun couldn't take the heat. So now I stick with single coil builds around 1.1 to 1.3 ohms.

I build a micro Coil 30 gauge, 7ish wraps gets me 1.2 ohms. Seems to be my sweet spot for kayfuns. I've been wrapping on an Allen key instead of a drill bit lately, and it's actually been making awesome coils. Kinda surprised it works so well.

I am experimenting extensively with wicking lately. I finally think I have conquered user error flooding, but my wicking isn't always satisfactory. So many ways to do it.

the way it looks to me,,,your airflow goes right through the middle of the tube

Ok i have finally seen it and i understand the concept now. The wick goes around, not inside, the coil. It makes sense, but i only use READYxWICK, which won't work well for this. I don't care much for cotton, but i'll give it a shot in about a week or two when i'm ready to rebuild my Kayfun.

Seems like 1.2 seems like the sweet spot for best flavor

Wicking is the key. I pull my cotton through the coil and leave about 1/8th inch above the bottom tube. I then stuff it in on each side of the deck. Works best for me.

Vaping Cuban, I totally agree that 1.2 is the way to go, especially on a mech. Perfect flavor and plenty of vapor for me.

As far as my quoted post, I've been doing the same wicking you describe on one of my builds and it seems good. No leaking for a week. My other I do the "traditional" way as described in the manual, and by many others. I lay the wick on the deck not covering the channels, and it works usually. My problem lately has been with burnt initial hits. I need a few short puffs to get enough juice in. My wick is not choking my coil, and it happens after a few days usually. That is my new headache that I can't seem to solve, now. At least it's fine after a few short puffs, just a bit annoying.

I absolutely LOVE my kayfuns, but they can be temperamental little bitches, too.

Been double posting a lot here, just keep having new things to say. If it's preferable to edit my posts in the future, please let me know, mods. I know you are lax, but double posting pisses people off sometimes.

I digress, so my wicking build that was going well, same as described by rdwilliamson, is now getting burnt hits initially again, after a refill, which I let sit for a few, and did some primers with the air hole briefly blocked. It's now working again, though. Gremlins. Lol.

The gremlins are gone again, by the way. Hitting like a champ again. So strange. Now I can enjoy some tasty orange dreamsicle... Yum.

Agreed. I drive for a living so a tank is a necessity, and this heat was causing so much leaking when in my car for a bit. I found that unscrewing the tank and storing it upright has stopped the flooding completely, aside from user error.

Something new always, yet I will still be purchasing more.

Best build i found is a clapton-ish coil. I say "ish" because i dont use guitar strings. I use 24ga wrapped with 32ga. 3/4 wraps on a 14 gauge needle and it ohms at around 0.44. Best flavor ive had in a kayfun.

I have the same issue in southern Oklahoma. Was 109 yesterday, came out to find the pressure in my kayfun big had build up and the fluid was leaking from every seam. What a mess.

Secondly, I got the kayfun 26650 a couple weeks ago, liked it at first, but it wasn't satisfying enough to keep using, going from the 28mm Atty with a 10mm drip tip bore to the kayfun felt like using a protank. If i could increase vapor production I'd be using it daily.

Have followed some guides on reddit, but have found all their builds take FOREVER to heat up, then barely produce vapor.

Trying the 30 AWG 7 wrap micro now, will report back when done

I don't use my Kayfun very often primarily because at first I could never get it to wick right, combined with the slow heat of the micro's I was building I didn't find the flavor to be accurate. However, for shits and giggles I built it with a 28g 7 wrap ugly coil (0.94 ohm) last week and can't believe how good Boba's Bounty tastes in it. Not a single dry hit! Not quite the sub ohm territory I tend to haunt, but worth attempting to build in the 1.2 sweetspot to see if I like that even better... will update later in the week once I've had the time to give that a shot.

I use 30 gauge kanthal, and six or seven wraps around a jewelers screwdriver or 1/16th drill bit, or, I'm currently wrapping successfully around Allen keys of the same size, should get 1.2 ohms almost exactly with a micro coil, as your setup listed is like mine. I find 1.2-1.4, but preferably 1.2 the sweet spot for my kayfuns. Perfect vape, and perfect flavor. Just right on both fronts.

For the heat flooding, I hear ya. I've been successfully avoiding flooding all week so far, I just take of my atty, and stand it up in a small pill container almost the perfect size, and keep it covered from the sun. No leaks all week. Can't remember if I read about this technique or watched a vid suggesting it, but it's proven to be good advice thus far. Not 109 here, but it's already in the 90s today, so I had some good heat to test in today, and all was well. Give that a shot in your car, I'm interested if it helps you. Who knows, tomorrow I might do the same and get a flood, but so far so good. Try it.

I just built a 28g macro coil 2 wires twisted together usinga drill, went with 5 wraps great flavor. It's a good build for a long drag, not sure how many ohms yet, my meter broke just hoping the cotton last atleast a few days! The biggest problem I have with kayfun is burning cotton! I love using my drippers but hafta use my kayfun for work, so I try to get the most out of it! Chimney build sounds likea great build I will definitely try that!

If it's burning cotton, especially if it worked for a few days, two things to check. Don't choke your wick on the coil. It's hard to get it right, since you want the ends to be fluffy, but the part in your coil shouldn't be twisted and tiny, but should be movable back and forth a bit, with out disturbing the coil at all.

Additionally, my last build was two days ago, burning cotton is why I re built. I ended up recoiling, because my coil was way too high above the air hole in the deck. They say 1-2mm is ideal, and it is important, since that starts the vacuum, and too high of a coil won't wick sufficiently at first. Hence, initial burning taste. It's a fine line, since it's my understanding the coil will short if actually touching the deck. I've never had that happen, yet, so I'd try to move your coil closer down to the airflow maybe. As long as you don't short with a mech, that shouldn't be a problem.

I definitely would not fire anything on a mech without checking ohms, though, so if you have no device to check ohms, (I use my mvp 2 since I don't build too low, yet at least, and it reads to at least .6, just won't fire it), I wouldn't risk it. Your choice, I'm only a couple months into building and about a month into mechs, so no expert, I just know safety first. I wouldn't want a short and some battery venting going down, I think we all can agree on that. Just looking out for ya'.

I use the vertical coils AKA chimney coil, and degummed hemp fiber works great for this coil. use this coil on my Kayfuns and Taifuns and i am in heaven!:)

Wait... Taifun?? How does that work?? I mean with the wick-holes on the sides?

I thought that was a kayfun build at first, then read the taifun comment. I was rather confused, and at first, before realizing that was no kayfun, I was thinking how in the hell are you using that much cotton? Lol. That would flood the shit out of a kayfun. Looks like an interesting build. I might need to look into taifuns. Do you us the GT or the GS? I think that's the two?

I only have GT's, GS are smaller and might be harder to build that way.

I am in heaven with my 'Funs! they do just what i need, and with the hemp fiber less maintenance then cotton. Will be trying Ramie and Rayon soon when i have time to experiment.

Awesome, I love my 'Funs, too just of the Kay variety. I have read lots of good stuff about the Taifun, so I might have to pick one up in the future.

And that hemp looks intriguing. Might have to get some. I've been told that rayon is great, too. It seems like something you wouldn't want to heat and inhale, though. I really don't know enough, though. Gotta do research since I'm associating a word with concern, and might be talking out my ass, lol. I always prefer to err on the side of caution, though.

Best build I have had in a Kayfun, and the way I set them all up now is twisted 32 gauge (3 strands) micro coil. 6 wraps on a 5/64 rod comes out to about .8-.9 ohms.
Some tasty vape there.

This times 100. I tried a dual coil and the chimney coil and I feel that a single standard horizontal coil vapes best for me on the 3.1ES (clone). Flavor is great and the natural C curve to the wick leaves me never a dry hit. Sure it's around .8ohm and not going to win a cloud competition but flavor and TH are on point. That's what I want from a tank.

When my 50w box comes in, I'll likely visit it with a 1.something ohm build but for now on a mech .6 - .8 is pretty sweet. Pair that with flawless wicking, I don't find any benefit to the chimney.

This seems to work best for me. 9 wraps on a 14ga syringe and comes in right at 1.2 ohms with 28ga wire. The wick works better folding and smashing against the deck for me, but some have bigger and smaller channels for juice and that changes everything. Will vape good as low as 11 watts. Flavor is potent.

So I finally got a new clear section to replace my cracked m tank on one of my kayfuns, that's been holding juice, but I haven't rebuilt it in weeks, since I knew disassembling would break it. Well, I changed my chimney gasket, all seems well, but now I've rebuilt a great coil that's hitting awesome at 1.2 ohms. I've re wicked three times, both of my usual setups, and fucking leaking, each damn time! I've wasted so much juice I'm about to throw my atty at the wall(I put it down and away from me, btw).

I needed to get away. One of those feelings where you feel you know what you're doing, so you HAVE to keep doing it until it's right. Three times and I'm forcing a break.

I'm so frustrated. I think later I might replace the gaskets that came with the new plastic, they look fine, but maybe they aren't sealing? Don't know, it's probably wicking error since the air hole is leaking, I'm just doing my usual, though. I haven't leaked in so long, and now I'm back to this shit. So pissed off now, needed to vent.

Used the o rings from my stock steel "window" and lo and behold, five minutes later I'm wicked, only partially filled, not gonna lose a bunch of juice again, and so far so good... Knock on wood.

The o rings on my plastic tank were too big for it, and I only noticed when I went to swap, and one just basically rolled right off. I'm far from being perfect, and still mess up my wicking, but it think that did it. Whatever it was, hopefully, it is good now. Let's see if it lasts, I'm optimistic. Those definitely weren't sealing. I got that difficulty inserting the drip tip that I always get after a clean and wick and or coiling job. That resistance tells me I have a seal, and it wasn't doing that before.

I knew better when that pressure wasn't there, but I do stupid shit when I get frustrated.

For old orings try putting them in some boiling water then throw them in the freezer, as i have heard the gets the rubber or silicone back to shape.

Worth a try if you are in a pinch!!!
Good Luck!!!

Out of curiosity where were you leaking? Was it come out the air hole or physically seeping through connection points.

What I do after installing a new wick and I have attached the base of the chimney is to add a few drops of liquid directly onto the coil and wick, just enough so some of it starts to creep out of the liquid channels on the deck. Then I put on the top of the chimney, attach the tank, fill with liquid (top fill method) attach the top, wait about 2 minutes and it is ready to go.

No dry hits.
