Doing some research for budget temperature control mods. With the catch that the temperature control feature actually works...
So far the Kangxin VF and VF mini are the only two I've seen that actually work.
The m80 doesn't work
The rcomen on FT doesn't work properly.
Are there any other BUDGET temp control mods out there?

$170 is about the cheapest you'll find for an authentic DNA40 device (Hana Modz, S.I.). The latest supposedly better-than-the DNA40 is the SXmini Box Mod for $200.
I have a clone Hana Modz and, like the M80, it fails the burn test. However, it does have some temp control. My authentic DNA40 Hana passed the burn test (dry cotton in the coil at 300 degrees and 20 watts).
Save your pennies and wait. Spend close to $200 for the best. You'll be a better person for doing so.

I second that. The IPV4 has the genuine YIHI chip, and is certainly a budget price. As well, looks like the YIHI chip passes the burn test:

There's really three categories:

  1. Yihi - SX350J and SX330J chips
    • Pioneer4You IPV4 is the only budget one (EDIT: released), as people have mentioned
      • I've had mine a week, and it's a good device. Lots of bugs, and little annoyances.
      • And one big annoyance - the "mirror finish" screen (unreadable outside or in any bright light.)
        • But that can be DIY fixed (there's another thread discussing that in this forum)
      • I have my (first ever) YouTube video in my signature; unboxing and (long) description including of annoyances and some problems I had - which have not repeated, thankfully.
    • Sigelei 75W
      • Just learnt about this one. Not yet released.
      • Single 18650 battery, almost certainly using a Yihi chip - I would think very likely the same 330J as the IPV4
      • Link at Asmodus, priced at $90.
      • Link at Origin Vape, mentioning 'rumours' of using the Yihi chip
  • Genuine DNA 40s
    • HCigar HB40 @ $100 is the only cheap one I can think of
      • I've seen positive reviews of this, e.g. Mike Vapes on YouTube.
    • All the big names like Hana, VaporShark, VaporFlask etc will be much more
  • ChiDNA 40s (as the Chinese clone of the DNA 40 has become known in some circles)
    • 50W Heatvape Invader Mini: very cheap, and easy-to-purchase (available in US and Europe)
      • Yes, 50W - the clone DNA 40s are now up to 50W.
      • Single battery 18650.
      • About $60-70 I think?
      • Water resistant and rugged - very rugged; people have driven cars over them!
      • No USB charger port (because of the water resistance.)
      • Other downsides are some annoyances in operation such as it requiring five clicks to wake up from sleep, if you leave it too long, and also not having a spring loaded 510.
    • Kangxin "Mini VF" 50W: another 50W device, soon to be released
      • Only available from China at the moment - 3FVape, Focal and FastTech all have them listed.
      • Very similar to the Heatvape in spec - single battery 18650, 50W
      • Except this has USB charging and spring loaded 510
      • It also has a built-in flashlight with two modes! Which I actually think will be awesome :)
      • Will be available in about 5 colours
      • I have one on order from FastTech, in the green.
      • Has been (predictably) delayed; first batches currently scheduled for next week, but my FT order says ships on the 25th (two weeks further)
    • Yep NTC 60W - yes, now 60W?!
      • A new mod appearing on Alibaba: moander.en.alibaba.com
      • Appears to be ChiDNA 40 pushed to 60W
      • 1 x 18650
      • See posts below
    • Hana Box clones : lots around, but I have no knowledge of what they're like
    • VaporShark clones : ditto
      • personally I wouldn't consider these because I hate the VS bottom-screen!
    • Vapor Flask 2.1 clones - Waidea and Kangxin; these I do know a lot about
      • I own the Waidea and that is what I recommend.
      • The Waidea is the closest to a 1:1 clone. Very very close to the original, practically identical exterior - the appearance and finish is excellent.
      • Here's a review: Vaping Cheap's review of the Waidea VF DNA 40 clone.
      • They have had some ground issues, that has required some owners - myself included - to remove the top plate and screw it on much tighter. This is because they didn't put in a proper ground path, it relies on the tightness of the top plate.
        • Waidea have been informed of that via Nicole at Vaping Cheap, and have said a fix has been implemented and is in current/future batches.
        • So it hopefully shouldn't be an issue for new orders.
      • I love mine. It basically looks like a $250 device, and I paid $70 for it (from 3fVape)
      • TC works fine. Not as well as a genuine DNA 40 perhaps - there's some annoyances such as it sometimes thinking a Kanthal coil is Ni200 (when TC is turned on) and so giving a sub-power vape for 2-3 seconds before it notices. But other Waidea owners are not reporting this, so it seems to be fixed in later batches.
      • A common problem with all ChiDNA-40s (so far) is that when they go to sleep, you have to press fire once to wake them up, then fire again to vape - in other words a two-press fire to start vaping from sleep. That is likely the case for all the Chi DNA40s I've mentioned here, not just the VaporFlask clones.
      • If you want more details on these, there's a huge thread on 'another forum'.
So yeah, there's a lot to choose from! But most of it is clones, and most of those you generally need to order from China. But I'm sure before long they will start being imported to US and Europe (some individual sellers may already be doing so, eg. on eBay)

Bit early to tell maybe? It's similar price to IPV4, almost certainly using the same chip, but only single battery, and lower wattage. Better if you like single battery ,worse if you like dual battery! The wattage probably doesn't matter much for most people, certainly not me (I've never been above 60W.)

Of course the IPV4 has a major defect - the unreadable screen - but I'm guessing that's going to be fixed in future batches and quite possibly by the time the Sigelei comes out.

The side panels come off on the Sigelei, so that suggests magnets which is nice. Then again the IPV4's rubber section is hardly difficult to remove, and it feels great in the hand - though it doesn't look as nice I guess.

Anyway I agree that the Sigelei looks good. But I'm currently assuming it's going to be more of a single vs dual battery thing compared to the IPV4, rather than being altogether superior. And personally I prefer dual battery.

Maybe I am jumping the gun by the statement; but looking at history sigelei appears to be a tad better as far as fit and finish goes. I don't own a sigelei mod but my ipvmini2 and ipv3's compared to a sigelei of similar power do show a huge difference in finish. I think of it as going from a ford to a mercury... same product but a little more attention to detail with slight upgrades in material.
The lack of a dual battery will Hurt it to some I'm sure, but I'm one that isn't a fan of the 'married batteries'. I have one set for the few times I wanna take my sx mini up to higher power; but, I can't keep my keys in the same spot, moreless batteries.

Yeah fair enough. My only experience of Pioneer4You is the IPV4 and I certainly can't claim it's a masterpiece of design or QC - the screen alone is utterly ridiculous. I have heard good things about the Sigeleis.

Regarding batteries - what I've done is label mine in pairs. Battery A1 and A2, B1 and B2, etc. I always make sure I use them as pairs, but I move the pairs between my two dual battery mods (the IPV4 and the Waidea VF clone.)

I don't yet have any single battery mods - my first will arrive in a couple of weeks, it's the Kangxin Mini VF 50W I described above. When I get it I planned to get another pair of batteries and label them S1 and S2, and use those only in the single battery mod(s)

Although I learnt something interesting today (which perhaps is not news to you!) - one only really needs to worry about marrying with series mods. Dual battery series mods should have matched batteries, but for dual parallel mods it doesn't matter. And in fact they could even have different charge levels, and they would become equalised after a while (the lesser charged battery being in effect charged by the mod/the greater charged battery.)

Of course if one has both parallel and series mods, the problem remains. But it would change the nature of the problem - it would mean that instead of dedicating a pair of batteries to single mods, I could instead dedicate batteries for the Series mod(s) (also labelled 'S'!), and then the others could be interchangeable between parallel or single mods.

But yeah it is an extra hassle all round, though not one I can avoid already owning one parallel, one series, and soon one single battery mod! I can understand why if you don't already have a series mod, you might find it more convenient not to get one. (It didn't remotely occur to me, I'm still quite new to removable batteries!)

The sxmini has a dual batt mode and I have two pairs of vtc4s for it , labeled. I'm just inherently lazy. Lmao
That and my adv doesn't require dual batteries; but on occasion ill go up to 90-95. In which case ill switch it over to dual batt mode. Normally though my personal preference is for the smaller form factor.

I don't know that im buying that parallel battery mismatch thing. If i were you i would look into that a little further before not keeping them together. If its in relation to p4y's 'new charger technology' I would yeast that as far as I could throw an Abrams tank.
As a general rule all batteries in sets need to discharge and cycle together irregardless of of stacked or parallel

Wow OK! That would just qualify as budget I guess, though the MSRP is $180. I see a pre-order at $120.

I have no idea what chip that is -could it be a new one? The screen, assuming it's accurate, looks nothing like DNA 40 or Yihi

There are 2 more "genuine Dna 40" mods coming out from a company called "lost Vape" - both are dual 18650 mods - the TAN mod "Plus" (wooden box mod) and the Esquare which is a metal frame box mod with your choice of covers. I believe the price range is somewhere around $130-140

I personally am not impressed with IPv4. Lots of little issues popping up (I'm sure can be fixed with firmware) but then there's the other issues.
1: Mirror finish makes it hard to see screen. Yes, you can diy a fix, but you will void your warranty.
2: doesn't come with a battery charger and if you find one, it only charges 1a
3. No lock function.
4. Can't save joules setting in memory
5. No live temperature reading.
6: inside is cheaply put together

I would get the hcigar hb40 if your looking cheap route. Or you can get a Hanamodz sale unit. The sale units have light scratches but will save you $30. They also have the new v4 with larger screen, atty lock and a flip open battery door for $150

Or wait for the sigelei one. Personally. I wouldn't buy clone chip ones, for me, it's a safety issue. I'll buy clone, rda, Rta buy mods, I want authentic, at least the chip that runs it.

really glad i found this thread!

thinking about getting an invader mini or one of those kangxin mini vf mods. im just not sold on their size. i was considering installing a YiHi chip in my cloupor mini, but at the rate that this stuff changes there is surely a similar mod coming soon.

what other options are there?

I received my Kangxin Mini VF about a week ago. The TC isn't bad at all. The device does switch from TC to wattage mode and vice versa, after the dialog for a new/old coil. I noticed occasional hick ups, trying to use the device while charging. Once, I even had to remove the battery for a hard reset. Another con I noticed, vaping at 450F @ 40W, the battery needs recharging after one hour of use.

I'm enjoying the invader mini as a going out mod and the evic vt is getting great early reviews. That will be out in a couple weeks

Even though I generally stay away from devices with built in batteries, the Evic vt shows promise. And I actually love the color schemes though I seems a lot of people don't. Pubsardo atually has a quote on his website that initial testing is showing that it's the best TL device he's tried so far in regards to how it handles TL. I figure it's worth a shot since it's only $70 for the full kit. I also really like the atty that matches, though I will never buy coil heads.

Now I just hate the wAiting. Waiting for this is worse than my anticipation for the apple watch. Been waiting for that since it was announced in October but mine finally comes on Monday

The difference in this kit and what i have used before is astronomical. I have use both the Ti and the Ni coils for over a day now and am in love. Im a much bigger fan of the Ti coil.

I'm waiting for the evic vt. I'm really interested to see if the ti mode actually works. I like working with titanium but it doesn't seem to mix well with the dna40 or the sxmini . Even at 300 degrees, the cotton burns right up

I have been vaping on temp control between 380 and 420 with zero burning issues. I build coils myself. In fact i started building coils long before I had a deck to build them on. BUT...i have no qualms about picking up a 5 pack of coils to keep with this. Im going to keep using They are vertical stacked .05 oh with monster air flow. Look at this, I could literally stick a straw down this airflow hole its so wide.

What is that on?

I ace no burning issues with ni200. Titanium gets much hotter and at 310, the cotton turned black and burnt apart instantly. If the wick is wet, here's no issue, but if it burns when the cotton gets dry, it defeats the purpose of temperature control

That looks awesome. How did you get it so fast? I didn't think they were releasing for a couple more weeks. I have one on preorder but was told they are in route to them now.

Good to know the titanium mode works. I have a role of spider silk 26g ti. Like I said, just doesn't work well on sxmini

I won this from an online contest here. DHL got this from Shanghai to the Florida Keys in 3 days.

I have been testing each coil extensively, so I can give a proper review on it.

People looking at me must have thought my boat was on fire, I was moving pretty quickly (30-40 mph ) wasn't even trying for a big hit, this thing is silly. Air flow is smoother then smooth. Flavor is out of this world.

Not for nothing, If i didnt just spend my money on a bunch of inexpensive Nautilus tanks, and a black and white subox. I would absolutely buy another one of these right now. For that random off-chance I lost this or it broke. This black and red is sweet, but I like the white and blue for a subtle classic look. That would be my color of choice .

I just received my Kangxin mini VF that I got from a gearbest flash sale for $15. I figured it was an inexpensive way to try temp control. It really works well, but like you said the battery life is just abysmal. I also could do without the led bulb on top. Other than that it is pretty nice. Temp control works well, and it feels really nice in the hand. It will probably replace my kbox as aout and about beater mod. Now that I have tried Temp control, I have ordered an IPV 3 LI that I can use at home.
