i started with an Ego, but like most of us here, I have moved on to a different style mod. Most of us use mods with 510 connections. I would suggest you start with an Istick and an Aspire Nautilus mini. Welcome to the Underground.

Most Vapers have started with an EGO or something similar. Everyone moves on to more advanced devices though, if you are serious about vaping.

Celtic Fog gave a great starting point for a new vaper. Ego's tend to be a waste of time and money.

Ego's are great for beginners... K.I.S.S.... is a great motto... for someone just starting out who doesn't need or want to be overwhelmed. I personally still use Egos everyday and I've been vaping for almost 3 years.

Ego's come in a huge array of sizes, shapes, Mahs, and Variable voltage or not variable voltage. The higher the Mah... the longer the battery will last between charges. If you just want a good basic uncomplicated battery.. get a stantard Ego or Evod battery such as these...

The next step up would be a variable voltage... such as a Vision Spinner, Spinner II, Ego Twist, or Tesla Spider... These have a dial on the bottom that allows you to adjust the voltage...

The next step up after this, and the highest I would recommend for a new vaper, would be a regulated mod... such as an eLeaf iStick or MVP... These allow you to adjust voltage and wattage... These are favorites among a great deal of Vapers...

I currently have this one. http://www.v-ecigs.com/900mah-ego-passthrough-black/
not the biggest, my original one i used for at least 8 months was a 1100 but i paid about 3 times the price, I refuse to on one that is not pass through just cause its a pain to me personally to unscrew the tank, screw on the charger to charge it plus i am always charging mine in my car while driving and vaping on it.
honestly tho even tho i haven't used one yet I would just buy the Istick10, its only like $30.00 its pass thou has a 1050 battery and its veritable voltage. http://www.smokecityca.com/eleaf-istick-mini-p/sc_istickmini.htm
But I do plan to keep my Ego also after I get one, just good to have back ups, and have back ups of your backups. My first Ego did stop working but it was dropped I don't know how many times. it got lost, found, thrown in a trash can, i found it cleaned it up kept using it. now it just don't keep a charge. i don't think any device will last a lifetime.

Ego batteries certainly fill an important niche in the vaping world.
Most of us, as you've seen, started there and then moved on as our needs changed. However, some never outgrow them. Both my wife and my boss are going on two years with eGo style batteries and have no desire to switch.
I consider myself an experienced vaper and I have a couple Spinner II's in my arsenal. I like the ease and form factor.
Each person is going to choose their gear for different reasons.
Find something you like, something that works for you and then dive in, but understand, if you're like most of us, you'll be eyeing the next new thing in no time.

EGo Twist batteries are excellent for a beginner who wants a little more control than a straight 3.7v 900 mAh stick battery. I still have the one I started with. I keep a Protank 3 on it for driving and situations where my RDA just isn't practical.

I keep using a ego 650mah at work. its cheap, and I use menthol 24mg in it. hit strong, and opens my sinuses. I just cleaned my chicken coupe today, and the ammonia closed up my nose . Menthol mania, and a fresh charged ego battery opened me back up.

I still have the two simple black ego (evod) 600 mah batteries (my first ever batteries) that I purchased October of 2013. They still take a charge and work fine, pump out 3.7 volts like a mech mod would. Whenever everything else is drained or I just don't feel like taking a tank off some other battery, I pull one out and am amazed at how such a little cheap battery works so well.

I have an evod with the adjustable bottom at the end of battery. It works much better than the one i tried a year ago. but i still have that one and keep an extra charged all the time. Of course I have found that I would prefer to have a battery that will last ALL DAY and charge while I sleep! Eventually I will get one. I am happy I have what I have though! It's still better than smoking analogs, and even though I don't enjoy the hit off the weaker battery as much, it works to keep me from grabbing a stinky cig! My advise is to get what you can afford to suite your needs right now. It may change later but it's still better than smoking :) If you can afford a good initial investment get a good battery! One that will stay charged a long time- that you can adjust settings. That coupled with a good tank- because you will enjoy more and better tasting vapor. I will let someone who knows more tell you what kind of each is best. I don't know yet! Some suggested the Istick and an Aspire Nautilus mini. You will get more bang for your buck.

You are very welcome!... You will find that most "seasoned" or "veteran" vapers are more than happy to answer any questions you may have and help you along your journey. After all, we were all their once ;)

For a new starter, I would like to recommend you to try ego or evod at first, and then ego twist, and then VV/VW Box MOD...
IMO, mech MOD and RDA is much completed than VV/VW box MOD in using...

Try the eGo T 900 mAh battery, a high quality lithium ion battery for your electronic cigarette. A rechargeable battery that will last you one full day, this one is perfect for all day vaping without a break.
