Hey guys. Always seen this site, but never visited. Been vaping about 3 years. Started with a $30 juice pen kit, now it's probably my most expensive habit. I have a question. I don't smoke, but I love vaping. Of course there are people against inhaling anything, but I could care less. I got into temp control a few month ago. Love it. Seen a vid online today about the dangers of using nickel (some of you may have seen) and he raised valid points to me. Do you guys believe using nickel/titanium is okay? He said using kanthal is perfectly safe. We used the elements used to make in it everyday life. Forks, spoons, cooking pans and the such. Have since the metal age. He said there a reason there is not nickel cook ware. And people that topically use nickel say it taste different. He said that's becuase nickel is being introduced into the wire/e juice. And I've been reading a lot about a toxin titanium may produce. I LOVE temperature control, but there is a ton of uncertainty flying around. I just wanna enjoy my juice and not worry about coughing up a lung 30 years down the road. I see that a lot. Not the way to go out.

Welcome to the VU.
It may take years to understand the good/bad results of vaping. The only thing we all agree on is "It's safer than smoking"

I actually found the vaping safety area and saw the nickel thread. Some good stuff. I guess I shouldn't be really concerned. I didn't realize my gf had a nickel allergy and she didn't die or have her throat swell up from using mine. She just said it taste bad. Must be very little nickel being let off.

Welcome to VU, @VapingN252 - I'm afraid I don't have much to offer as I don't do temp limiting, just wanted to pop in and let @Huckleberried know I saw her tag...from what I understand nickel is generally accepted in the TC world, but there's a debate ongoing as to whether it's okay for old-tech wattage control. I'm still using Kanthal for that...

Hey bud, welcome the VU :)

In regards to using pure nickel wire I don't see how it could be any more or less dangerous than using one of those "special wires" like gplat or another wire where we honestly don't know what blend of metals or amounts in the mix we use. As for the Standard resistance wires we use, one is NiChrome which is literally composed of two elements, Chromium and Nickel (some versions of Nicrome can have small amounts of Iron in them as well but mainly just the two elements compose it hints the name being a hybrid of the two elements.)

The other main resistance wire, Kanthal, is a blend of Iron, Chromium, and Aluminum.....with Aluminum supposedly linked in some instances to affecting memory and iron fumes being toxic at melting point, or any heavy metal fumes for that matter, if am forced to come to the conclusion that vaping nickel wire is no worse than using stock resistance wire.

As other's have stated, we don't have the long long term vaping studies, they're still being done, to prove what the truest long term effects of vaping will be, just that we all are in agreement that it is safer than smoking...it literally saved my life (I've written my story in other threads, you can find it if you wish to find how vaping literally saved my life,) and I breathed so much better within a few short months of switching from what felt like a hopeless smoking habit that I was at the mercy of for life...i had quit quitting and had given up convinced I'd never be able to stop smoking and vaping saved me from that as well as I am almost nic free from where I started and the strongest possible nic levels a couple years ago....and vaping gear has excelled and improved by light years since then making it safer and better all the time.

Nickel wire has been used in vaping coils for years, just not as the contact metal vaporizing the liquid. Pretty much all stock Kanger coils from the T2 on (I never tore apart anything older than that,) used Nickel as leads tack welded to a nicrome coil to help keep the insulator for the bottom of the coil assembly from burning up and shorting the coil out as well as many older RTA atty's required NR-R-NR configured coils that used Nickel or pure silver wire even as leads to a resistance wire coil. Most of these RTA's were designed with a ceramic cup style coil holder and the nickel leads helped keep things from heating things up in the wrong place making the builds lasting longer and coils working more efficiently. Examples of these style tanks are the Oddysseus Tank and Diver V1 and V2.

So, in some small part or another, Nickel wire has been used in vaping for years and nothing until temp limiting came into the picture questioned nickel's probable toxicity as it is now what is vaporizing the liquid instead of just being a non resistance lead for electricity to pass threw to the resistance wire for a more efficient coil. Hope this helps put your mind further at ease and I wish you happy vaping and any more questions please don't hesitate to ask...there are no stupid questions, only stupid reasons for not asking them. But as someone vaping for years I am sure you have some advanced knowledge and I could probably learn a thing or two from you :)

Cheers :)

I believe we have been vaping on nickel since the CE4 and protank and even before.
They all use NiChrome wire.
Guess what the "Ni" part is?

one of those "special wires" like gplat

gPlat = 317L Stainless (Wire for a Mig welder but a special diameter)

Therefore a $20 15 foot length of gPlat costs the "inventor" less than 50 cents.

One more thing:

FUCK GPLAT AND THOSE VAPINOLOGY ASSHOLES THAT TOOK ADVANTAGE OF VAPERS BY REBRANDING WELDING WIRE.

Yup, Nicrome.....Nickel Chromium wire :D so far people love it, it's why it's got a lower resistance rating than Kanthal because it's a blend of a non resistant metal and a resistant metal and the different blends (Nichrome 60, Nichrome 80, etc....) but yeah I couldn't agree with you more about Gplat and those other "gimicky" bullshit wires....the only "gimicky" type thing I ever bought into was Cotton Bacon and it's turned out to honestly be the best cotton I've ever used in my opinion...I can even vape it down to singeing close to dry and it will forgive me once or twice before giving me a burned taste and have to swap it out :)

I couldn't have said it better myself @5150sick ....laughed my ass off when I saw that, not because it's funny, but because that it's sad and true and couldn't have been said better any other way :)

Tired of the Media focusing on the "money story" . I will not make an issue over it. Everyone in America, get along. I don't have time to Baby sit your ass. Have more important things to do.

Um....Gplat is an overpriced brand of resistance wire used in vaping....we were talking about how the guy that came up with the "Gplat" brand to a relitivitely cheap type of wire...called it a "special alloy blend" and is our personal opinions, overcharged out the ass for it, and made a fortune. What we were talking about had nothing to do with rappers or any other type of music...we were just sharing our thoughts on other types of wire than traditional Kanthal and Nichrome bud...so sorry if I got confused by your response :)

I did ask Lightning Vapes about Titanium. They won't touch it. Says it can give off TOXIC fumes. Sean has always shot straight with me. No reason to doubt him. ;)

LOL! :D

As for Titanium...as I said in another post, with work and exhaustion running it's course I am sadly behind. I am behind in my reviews and reading, I am behind on keeping up on the latest pricing, and the latest controversy and a backlog of threads to go threw on here I plan to all catch up on when I wake up Sunday (it will be nice to have a "all vape day" :) ) But I know little to nothing about this Titanium stuff so I have stayed away from it till I could look into it more...Things are finally getting caught up around here and when I get back from a work trip next weekend I look forward to finally doing some vape shopping and getting my hands on a few things that I haven't been able to sample or borrow and learn more about for myself. If I find anything out as always, y'all will be the first to know and I am eager to learn more about this Titanium wire...I honestly didn't see that one coming. Nickel made sense, but Titanium feels like it was out of left field...even more than the "G-unit Gplat" phenomimon :D

I rely on people that make a living selling products to shoot straight with me. I have No Idea at all about Titanium as far as vaping goes. Motorcycle & Car parts made of it cost out the ass. I have receipts to prove it. Surgical Steel is coming into play, I didn't think to ask, but with Kanthal so inexpensive I will keep using it. I throw perfectly good coils away all the time, so I can make more.

My thing is I've been researching titanium and the toxic it makes. Apparently, it's in a lot of stuff we use on a daily basis. That being said, we are exposed to it (especially food wise) but inhalation is a different beast.

It's a tricky one, and as mentioned, who knows!
We all know copper is toxic, but still drink water out of copper pipes in many countries, which seems to be safe as no copper breaks down into the water. After over three years of vaping, one thing I do know, is that if those coils start turning red with your mouth to the throttle, you're not gonna have a fun time. Dry burns can't be good for you, no matter what wire you're using. Apart from the obvious pain in the throat, recent tests have proven this. Thankfully, it hasn't happened to me in a long time. Back when I was learning to use gennies I copped some harshies. If the coils stay saturated, I'd assume that none of the materials in use would do much damage, but I'm no scientist!

I have a Titanium left hip, pelvis, right rod in femur, and in both forearms
Seems to work fine to me :)
