Converting from smoking to vaping

Hi guys. I'm a total noob when it comes to vaping. Heres my story…

I started smoking when I was 14 basically sneaking into my mom's Marlboro lights 100's menthol. I became a regular when I was 16 and up to a pack to a pack and a half a day. My 17th birthday, I switched brands and went to smoking Newports Menthol 100's full flavor. I'm up to my current level 0f a pack and a half to two packs a day. Then comes college…

I live with a non smoker in the dorm. It seems like everyone around me is an anti. I feel like everyone is around me with a probe wanting to stick it somewhere on me everytime I light up. I had gotten tired of the lecturing from every anti on campus. I was lighting up one day after class and one of my few smoking friends came over to me and we stood there talking. She pulled this pen 0ut of her messenger bag and started smoking on it. I became mesmerized by it. It looked so cool. I wanted to ask her about it. It seems like no one gives her a bunch of shit for smoking either. I'd like to start but dont know where to start.

My questions…

What would be a good setup for someone starting out?
At my brand preference and amount, what would be a good strength?
Can I keep up at my current smoking amount by vaping?
Would I be smart to wean myself off nicotine? If so, whats the best way to do it?
Your tips?

Thanks.

1. A good set up... do you want to stick to the Pen type? They're eGo type batteries. There are good ones available, but there is better equipment available beyond an eGo type.
2. A good strength to vape would be between 12 and 18mg to start. Some need higher than that, I was most comfortable with 18mg, for the most part. I smoked more than a pack a day for 30 years.
3. You can smoke and vape, but most people find they prefer the vape. I smoked for 3-4 weeks before I put cigarettes down completely.
4. Weaning off nicotine is purely a personal choice. I started at 18mg, bumped up to 24mg, but it was too strong, went back to 18mg. After a few months, I started staggering down the strength of the nicotine by 2mg about monthly. I've been vaping about 2 years now, I vape roughly 10mg and feel fine staying there. I don't really have any intention of going nic free, but I may change my mind. I'm not worried about the nicotine, really.

You'll likely get several responses ranging from eGo types, to variable wattage devices. What's important is what YOU want and feel comfortable with. There are many, many options available these days. Good luck! Welcome to VU.

Hey! Welcome to the forum and making a choice to start vaping! As stated by Huckleberried, since you're just starting out, just stick with the pen style vapes for now and see how it fares with you. An Ego ONE is a nice choice to start with and its available in most vape shops. Becareful with some vape shops as they'll try to sell you on a complicated setup from the get go.

At a pack and a half to 2 packs a day I'd start with 18mg's strength in a flavor of your choosing and go from there. I'm currently at 8-9mg's and I'm staying right there. It took me 2 years to stop dual using, but I wasn't taking vaping very seriously and my setup wasn't encouraging me to stop (it wasn't very satisfying).

Weaning off nicotine as stated above is a personal choice. The nicotine doesn't cause cancer like everything states, but the bi-products from the combustion of tobacco cause it more than anything. I like my nicotine and I'm staying with it lol.

But start with a pen style vape and go from there. And watch out with the crap you can buy from gas stations... I don't like those very much personally.

Welcome to the Underground and your new life style!

The one question no one asked is.....................

What is your budget all in for a good kit?

And here is the way I made the transition to a non smoker.

Before I switched, I was a "Stogie Sucker.

upload_2015-9-17_12-5-19.jpeg

I was smoking those cheap assed little cigars that look like funny cigarettes.

And I was tearing the filters off.

So I started at 36mg of nic.

And I have slowly reduced that level as I am now down to 6mg with Zero as my target.

When I received my first kit, I had just purchased a carton of the stinkies.

I smoked first thing in the morning, then on to vaping until I just had to have a stinky then back and forth and a smoke before bed.

I did a variation on this theme for about 2 weeks and found that I was starting to enjoy vaping over smoking.

Then at the end of 2 weeks I was vaping only and just did not want to smoke.

I also had one full pack of stinkies left after I had quit.

And it is still sitting unopened on my desk.

And, BTW, IMHO, since you are smoking menthols that will make it even easier on you as you can just switch to a menthol E-Liquid.

My budget is around 100 dollars for the vape kit and juice. I just started looking at stuff online and I'm seeing some interesting setups.

Quick update guys. I bought my first vaping setup from a local vape shop. I got a Njoy eLeaf iStick base, AC Nautilis mini tank and juice in menthol, vanilla bean and double espresso. I'm vaping the vanilla bean right now and it seems strange to me right now but I think its that I'm not used to vaping yet.
Congratulations! I just hope, your vanilla bean isn't like the one I used to purchase. It was a coil killer, gain king up the coils so quick, I had to change coils every 2-3 days. That's when I got started with building my own coils.

Enjoy your new vape gear!

I do like it. The vanilla is quite good. It still seems weird to me that I'm vaping and nit necessarily smoking. I'm still filling in with cigarettes though at least until I'm used to vaping and then I'm going to wean myself away from the stinkies.

When you have the right level of nicotine, it's fairly easy to quit smoking.

I would say the Joyetech Evic VTC Mini is the best newbie kit at the moment, you can grow with it and it looks and feels great. Just make sure you get good batteries for it.

You'll be able to drop the cigarettes easily. If that's what you really want to do. You also have to train yourself to pick up the mod, instead of a cigarette.

I can't tell you how often the "idea" crosses my mind, it's a lot. But I hit my mod, and I'm good.

You just have to choose not to pick up the cigarette, and the urge will pass quickly.

Mornings... my place looks like a smoke stack. I hit my mod hard. It was nothing for me to smoke half a pack, before my second cup of coffee. I got passed that too :)

candicelayla welcome to VU and your new life.
Sounds like your off to a good start, you've got a decent starter set up. I'm one of those that went back and forth between vaping and a 1/2 pack of marlboro's and quite when the smokes were gone, but that's just me, some take longer, even much longer. But your starting to cut back on the coffin nails.
One thing I had to do the first montn or so was to keep a tank loaded with a high nic level then what was working for me, I started at 18mg and had 24mg on hand to fight off the strong cravings. A few puffs, a little light headedness and I'd go back to the lower nic tank.

First of all; Congratulations on making an awesome decision for your health and your pocket book.

Now, to the meat of your question. I'm going to give you the basic break down I give everyone who comes into my store.

1. The first step is that you need to commit to being done with conventional cigarettes. You, I think, have already done this and kudos to you for that. Still, it needs to be said that some figures I found online show that the statistic for quitting cigarettes in favor of vaping is 67%. That means that 23% either fail, or never intended to quit in the first place. It is my opinion that those people simply didn't want to quit smoking. That's fine, everyone's entitled to that choice, just be aware that there is still some mental preparedness that needs to go into this decision.

2. It's time to pick a device. Which device you go with is going to help you pick a nicotine strength when we move to selecting a few e-liquids to vape. A few good options are the evod 2 or a kanger mini subtank (k-box). These are both wildly different selections and you need to be aware of those differences. The evod style is nice because it isn't overly confusing, doesn't have a whole lot of variables in how it operates and it is cheap. I used an evod to quit smoking (2.5 packs a day) and it was an easy transition. That said, the K-box is one I give to plenty of first time vape users because of the ability to change how the vape will affect you. The variable air flow is going to make your vape warmer or cooler, based upon how wide open it is. You can get a few different coil types, to change that warmth as well. What does warmth mean? Hit at the back of your throat and how close to a cigarette it feels to you.

3. Now it's time for the e-liquid. I've seen a lot of suggestions for nicotine strength and I want to say "It depends on the device you are using." I have a few customers who went from cigarettes to drip vaping. If they had used a 24mg nicotine strength, it would have rocked their world. Based upon your cigarette usage I would suggest for the Evod (1 or 2) a 18mg nicotine strength and for the k-box setup a 12mg nicotine strength to start. Be aware, these affect different people differently. Why? Because none of us smoked in exactly the same way. I took deep and big hits, while others I know did shorter and less duration puffs. This matters, because the nicotine is absorbed through all portions of the longs and if the smoke goes deeper, you are going to get more nicotine.

3(b). PG vs VG. To keep it simple, PG is less sweet and gives you more of a throat hit. VG will give you more cloud and is a bit sweeter. For you, stick to something near a 50/50 mix. I know some people swear by the PG for that throat hit smokers like, but to be honest, I find it is better to get a warmer vape to achieve this and a 50/50 mix is going to give you a bigger cloud then a 30VG/70PG mixture will, convincing your brain that this is pretty close to the same thing.

4. Lastly - pick a few different flavors you are absolutely in love with. Go to a Vape shop in your local area and try them in person. Don't rely on reviews online, or guess and check, as this can defeat you before you've even begun. I said a few different flavors because it helps to keep your brain interested and will stop you from getting too used to one flavor, keeping it from becoming boring.

Wrapping it up - I hope you find flavors and a device that suits you and I look forward to hearing how it is going!

I started vaping "again" about a month ago I also was a pack a day person I've been around vaping before and have accumulated some knowledge of the vaping scene I started out with a variable voltage/watt mod when they were fairly expensive and when I got back into it a month ago bought an istick 40w tempature controlled mod with a kangertech sub tank mini and I used 6mg nic juice found it fairly easy to quit smoking and haven't touch a cigarette since and surprisingly find them awful to smell now since then I have switched to a ipv d2 75w tc mod and a herakles tank and a dripping atomizer also I don't think I'll ever go back to smoking just the smell alone makes me sick now

Hmm, well it is a bit different. It takes some getting used to, but even a smoker's tongue would know good juice. If you've already found a flavor that you can tolerate, then continue getting enough to get you by on its own, but also consider buying a few small bottles of flavors you haven't tried each time you re-up. It's a gamble to buy juice you may or may not be able to vape, but trust me when I say that the first flavor that you fall in love with immediately is game-changing. You will want to vape that juice all of the time.

Generally speaking, it's all about positive reinforcement. Every time that you smoke while doing something that you enjoy, you're reinforcing that behavior by associating it with other pleasant experiences. The same goes for vaping.

Vape when you're doing things that you enjoy on their own... ...preferably things that you wouldn't usually smoke while doing. You can vape under circumstances wherein you wouldn't/couldn't usually smoke. You can use that to your advantage.

Doing so shortens the amount of time it takes to get the positive mental associations with vaping forming. You don't smoke when you do that anymore. You vape when you do this. Have you ever smoked in bed? What about while cooking? The break-room at work? Basically, if it would be strange or impractical to smoke in a situation, that's probably a good time to have a vape. Vape when you wouldn't think to smoke.

Just little things like that change the way you perceive the experience. Rather than vape after that or before this (as it often goes with smoking,) vape "whenever". If you ever observe the behavior of someone who's been vaping for a long time, you'll probably notice that they don't tend to have "Hold on, I should vape before this," or "Man, after all of that, it's time to vape." moments. They'll pull their vape out randomly and may only take a few puffs before putting it away.

The idea I'm trying to get across is that you shouldn't try to make vaping a replacement for smoking. It's much easier to trick yourself into allowing it to occupy an entirely different space in your mind from smoking - a space that is uniquely rewarding in ways that smoking is not. Don't vape like you smoke and don't vape to fulfill the urge to smoke. It forces you into making an unfavorable comparison. No matter how you vape, what flavor/strength you vape, or what kind of day you're having, you are going to get cravings.

This is due to the fact that vaping isn't a substitute for an old habit. It's a lifestyle change. To ditch an old habit, you have to find incentives to do something different, not something similar to the habit you're trying to break. You're acquiring a new set of whims. You'll still get the urge to smoke sometimes, but it won't influence your behavior as much because the new niches being carved in your mind take priority over the older ones. New experiences form denser memories than familiar ones.

As far as tapering off goes... ...you can if you want. Pick your poison: quick burst of acute suffering, or long stretch of brooding, background static. It has worked for many people, though I'd argue that their success was had in spite of that rather than because of it. The sooner you can put those cravings behind you, the better.

Think of it this way. A week of withdrawals and cravings leaves you with fewer opportunities than a month or two of "getting by" does. I also think it's a bad idea to dual-use, in general, as you're pitting something that you're very used to against something you're not when it is more important to distance yourself from making comparisons to old experiences.

There is a lot of good enough here, and I will just add mine to strengthen the case.

Quitting analogs is not easy for everyone, even with vaping.
I am still struggling with it, and have been for several years.
But I have recently went from almost a pack a day to 3 or less.
And that is smoking about half or less and throwing them away usually.
I have been doing this off and on for a long time.
Every individuals experience will be different.

As stated above, you do need to distance yourself from analogs at some point.
I would never say sooner the better, that is an individual time frame, that forcing it could cause one to relapse faster.
It's an hour by hour, day by day thing.
Cause even with vaping daily, if you are a long time smoker, You know what it is that you are missing that a vape is incapable of replacing,
no matter the nic level.

There are a million things that you are used to with analogs, and subtle nuances that just cannot be replaced with vaping.
But, don't give up, I haven't for years.

Started with the eGo's and Bridged Atty with some type of fiber and filling those by the drop, first drippers on the market really.
That helped and worked for a bit, but was not good enough for me.
Then I progressed some time later to eGo Twists and Vivi Nova's and those were better, but still not hitting it.
I will skip the many other progressions, but now, I have an iTaste MVP3 30w and IVP3 Li VR 200W and a TFv4 and Velocity
These are actually working for me.

The moral is, you will have to find what really works for you personaly and don't give up.

What you have is a good starting point, and that may work for you just fine.

What you will have to really fight, is the psychological and physical aspects of missing analogs. That's the biggest struggle.
Cause regardless of vaping or not. Quitting smoking is just hard on an innumerable level for many people.

I still smoke, and vape. But I have cut my smoking way down, and I believe soon all the way out. I started with ego and twist style pens, and that didn't cut it. I now have a iStick 50w, and Kangertech Kbox mini.

I think as long as your cutting down from your previous 2 packs a day, you are making progress. Keep it up. I am down to half a pack, if that, and only at work.

My budget is around 100 dollars for the vape kit and juice. I just started looking at stuff online and I'm seeing some interesting setups.

For that budget you should definitly consider buying the vape kit on second hand websites, it is cheap and good quality most of the time. That's what I did when I started and I bought it from a nice customer on http://www.for-sale.co.uk/vaping. I highly recommend it, I'm sure you can find whatever you need on there. Good luck!

All the stories I've heard were more like, I vaped for 24 hours and tried smoking cigarettes and then I just didn't like it anymore. It's kind of nice to know that I'm not the only one that still smokes a little at first. Hopefullly I can drop it completely. Did you slowly cut down your tobacco use? I'd like to know more about your quitting story if you don't mind.

I did cut down a little from the beginning, but had a tough time finding a flavor that I liked. I was a menthol smoker for 30 years. I gave up on trying to find something that reminded me of a cigarette, tried out some "fun" flavors and found some that I really enjoyed. After that, my tobacco use did cut down a LOT. It just takes time for some of us to find what works.

I was admitted to the hospital with shortness of breath that was diagnosed as COPD. 25 year smoker of two packs a day. They released me from the hospital with nicotine patches and I was literally chomping at the bit for a cigarette. A friend of mine suggested vaping and I went to my brick and mortar and called her on my phone to help get me setup. My BM didn't have an ego, so I started with the istick 20w and the Kanger aerotank v2 and 18mg nic Cowboy juice. The cowboy juice worked for me because it was tobacco flavor and reminded me of smoking. That was August 7,2015 and I haven't touched a cigarette since.

If you want a little irony.... I was a Respiratory Tech for seven years and knew what smoking would do to my lungs. Another irony? More than half the respiratory therapists I worked with (and nurses for that matter) smoked. Since that date in August my mom has stopped smoking, my cousin is trying vaping, my DIL is vaping, and two friends. I pay if forward every chance I get because I really believe without vaping, I would have died from smoking.

My pulmonary function test was horrible. I couldn't breathe without coughing prior to giving up smoking. As someone who really enjoyed singing, I lost the ability to do that too. Smoking took a lot from me and now I'm fighting back. I wish you nothing but the absolute best on your journey!

I never would've thought something like it would work, but I'm glad I proved myself wrong. Finding the right juice for you is HUGE. I stopped chasing something that tasted like burnt paper and leaves.

I've been vaping for about 2 months now, and cig free for about a month of that. I started out with a flavor called honey tobacco at 18mg nicotine. At that point I started vaping at the times I usually smoked, but I was still smoking before bed and when I first woke up in the morning. Two weeks later I dropped to 12mg nicotine and was just smoking before bed. After I finished those bottles I swapped flavors and dropped to 6mg and forced myself to stop smoking all together. I still crave cigs every now and then, usually right after eating a particularly tasty meal I get a real powerful urge to light up again, but I've been able to resist it. I haven't gone back and tried smoking since then, but I'm guessing that I'd despise the taste enough to not pick up another one. I'm planning on dropping to 0 nicotine on the next batch of juice I pick up and see how it goes. Yeah, I've mostly replaced one habit with another, but I'm no longer the only person still smoking at work and I don't stink. As a bonus, my sense of smell is starting to come back, although that's a mixed blessing in a paper mill town, but my sinuses aren't as constantly plugged like they used to be.

@Huckleberried I'd like to prove myself wrong as well. I have found 1 e juice that I like but it does get tiring, hopefully I can find 3 flavors I like so I can switch it up.

@rickycal78 The after meal cigarette just pushes me towards sparking one as well. Hoping to break the habit just like you.

3 flavors you like is completely do-able. I found 2 in the beginning and it changed everything for me. Don't get me wrong, I still sometimes get a bit of an urge after 2 years. Nothing like it was in the beginning, though. Leaving my cigarettes in my car while I was at work helped a lot, but when I started forgetting to bring them in the house after work, I knew things were changing. I could easily go outside and get them, but it became easy to decide not to. I was proving that I no longer needed to. That made me feel really good. Baby steps is all it took and that worked. :)

Just to update: I switched from TC to VW and found out that I actually like the very first juice I bought and hid away. :D what a surprise how the flavor is now much stronger with VW

Not sure the TC vs. VW is what did that. If it's old juice, it steeped, flavors change over time, the Temp you vape at had very little to do with it. However, different temps (and I am not talking about TC, that doesn't matter that much), can bring out nuanced flavors in a juice. Such as, I just made a new batch, it will completely change week after week for the first 4 weeks. But, at 38W on a .5 atty, you get more tobacco flavors, and at 42W more cream flavor. But that will also change after a good long steep.

note: Edited cause I sent it via TapaTalk and it was messy.
