Basic MOSFET wiring

For people interested in unregulated box mod vapes, I just got in and testing using the NXP PSMN0R9-25 surface mount resistor installed, 15k resistor installed, and heavy duty 2 oz copper. I also made sure the holes for Drain & Source could handle heavy duty wire (up to 14 awg stranded). The board is tiny & thinner the the TO-220 MOSFET's. I even had them made in the USA instead of China!

And to add to the wiring instructions people have posted here, this'll show how handy it can be.

I've wired the optional voltmeter in parallel with the vape coil instead of to the switch so you get the true voltage across the coil and the meter powers down automatically when not vaping.

Contact me or give me permission to post a link to my own URL's on eBay! I'll stop the advertisement now :) Just excited about getting them in finally.

For my next project I'm considering either a PWM circuit or a DC-DC regulator that can run from parallel or series batteries.

@Mau @Dutzy You guys have any builds going on?

Im doing a regular old parallel G Hydro dipped box again, just got the VM hole cut and waiting for some silicone wire to get in and the clear coat to dry for a couple days. That hydro pattern is kind of old these days, but I like it and really thats all that matters :p

Purple PWM build.

Finished the 2nd 26650 PWM box, this is the old style PWM board that were a little big. Seems that the usps has lost my new shipment of mini PWM boards :( but not to worry I guess, they are only .50 each now :) Board and all the components to populate are under $7.50, total bargain for the awesomeness.

I searched for months trying to find info on building box mods. Vape forums would get pissed off because I said Damn or crap or something like that. They would ban Me. Fuck Em' I found home! No kids should Vape anyway. And if people are too high & mighty to put up with a few chosen words, they don't belong on an Adult forum. Vapor Joes has helped me make the right choices for months. If they don't like it, Fuck Em'.
I was banned from those ass hats too. They tried like hell to make my change my user name. Told them I diddnt need them and to eat a bag of Dicks!!! Lol

I hear ya. I have no algorithm to explain it. It's an ehco in my mind. Your learning, learning. Unproductive people waste my time, so I avoid them when I can. :cool:

Checkin in guys. Im working on something, but in the mean time did anyone have any experience with YIHI SXmini J? Im bout to put it it just wanted some feedback on it and if anyone has general wiring diagram for this so I can use as a cheat sheet

What kind of voltage drop have you measured from your mods? I did a series 18650 today, and with 8.31v from batteries its giving 7.79v into atty with a 0.24 ohm load. 14ga wires carrying current, 194A fet and Sony batteries. I should have the 12.6v box done tomorrow, ill post some pics when im done. Gonna test the drop with a 0.5 ohm load, thats around 300w or so if everything goes to plan.

Why are you using 18650 for this? for the love of safety switch to something much better

THIS should fit the space you are looking for. 40amps, 50 amps burst

Because why not? Lipos are safer to use for vaping, sure. Just not very practical in case i need to swap out the battery for a fresh one. When i make a LiPo box, it will be something ungodly big, like 10 000 mah Gens ACE in a Hammonds D box. Been holding out on those until the new and bigger FDVs come out.

And i know what im doing, i really do. These high voltage boxes are safer than 4.2v parallels with crazy ass 0.04 ohm builds etc IMO.

Of course, I wasnt questioning that at all! Just the batteries are such trash, hold no true capacity, cant handle high amps and have crap drain. Charging is easier and faster, give it a shot if you are feeling bold. MAybe you will like it. I find them MUCH more efficient for vaping at high watts in this form factor vs traditional setups, even on around 1000 mah

Either way we both know that will be a good build lol

They wont be pushing high amps with the way i intend to vape :) i like my around 100w or so, 150w tops. With a 12.6v setup its not even touching the 30 amp limit, and the batteries perform better.

At 12v 1.0 ohm coil will be draining 12ish amps and over 150 watts. Plenty good.

Oh yeah, thats just torture testing and making sure everything holds up if i ever feel like selling it. Im never going to vape at 300w :D

So after making a plain box first I melted the sled trying to solder the contacts. So just took my time and made this one.

Those 3d sleds are very easy to melt :mad:
So are coils. First build for the 12.6v box was a 0.59 dual coil setup. Wicked, all wet, hit the button and flames happen. Second hit, coil melts from the center and fries the mosfet in progress.

Oh well.

Yea after I melted my second sled I decided that I would have to build outside box and then put in. And that is a pain. Can't even use a blow dryer on low to melt shrink wrap.

Where you get the box and sled from Wabah. Fixing to give the small box a try. But def want to try different sleds. Not to happy with 3d's personally.

That is a keystone battery sled. I got the box from Alpinetech, he has a ebay store but last time I checked he didn't have the anodized boxes on there. I hit him up through Facebook. Do a ebay store search for Alpinetech. He has cnc boxes and keystone sleds. Also google Modcrate he has them too, but mod crate has 3d sleds I think.

@Wabah58 what is the on/off switch for on the PWM board from @david4500?

I've got a mesquite wood box mod I made a few days ago that I'll post pictures of tomorrow . Its my first ever box mod so don't be expecting too much. But for now I'll post a picture of the sketch for a coffin mod I'll start making for my girlfriend tomorrow.IMG_20150823_180821.jpg

Depends on how you define 'better'. Some people are more sensitive to price, others need lower resistance (specially critical with Parallel builds), some are about size or ease of builds, others look for something in between. That diagram is good for Parallel builds, or you switch the battery wiring to series, and you have a good basic series build. But remember, in a series build, it's even more important not to over drain your batteries (high chance of battery failure in series then in parallel if you take them too low).

In my biased opinion the microFET boards I'm selling on eBay win in several categories. The microFET's have a surface mount MOSFET & resistor on aboard which really helps the easy of building and size requirements. The PSMN0R9-25 MOSFET I use for the assembled parts also have 'better' specs for lower resistance then 3034's. If you search in the forums & OSH, you'll see that others have recommended that MOSFET or some slightly worse ones. The disadvantage of getting a board from OSH is you have to solder those tiny parts to the board (which I think david4500 will agree is a pain for people without experience).

Notice the board size compared to the MOSFET ... the MOSFET I used was a 3034, so that board is TINY! The width of the board is about the same as the 3034, but it's thinner, easier to solder too, and the length after having the wires soldered will be less then a 3034 even after you cut most of the leads off.

I've been trying to hold off until several people from here have given me unbiased feedback on the boards ... but can't hold it in much longer!

P.S. the schematic only shows one battery, but it can be a parallel or series build.
P.S.S. microFET is simply the name I gave to them since they were so small.

Looks alright for batteries in series. Not so much for single or parallel batteries. Just pick up the go to 3034 instead.
 
How about the IRLB8743PBF N-channel or IRLB3813PBF N-channel? It is very hard to find those 3034 here in our place. BTW thanks for the heads up..^^

Some people like the IRLB8743PBF, others not as much with is why they switched to the IRLB3034PBF as the preferred TO-220 MOSFET. Based on the specifications, the IRLB3813PBF should be a better choice then the IRLB8743PBF. A lot will depend on what type of wattage you're vaping at, how often & long you hit, and how warm you fell comfortable with the MOSFET getting. The IRLB3034PBF have much lower resistance then those other two so will waste less power and won't get as warm with lots of long hard hits. Keep in mind that for a series battery build, the differences between those MOSFET's becomes much less important.

I suspect you're not in the US, so shipping from me would be more expensive (costs about $6 - $7 for most light weight International packages from th US). But, if you have other friends that might be interested, maybe a bulk buy from any source maybe a viable option. Forum PM me if you want to talk in more detail about IRLB3034 or my tiny microFET boards with MOSFET & resistor already installed.

DISCLAIMER: I don't vape myself ... I got sucked into these forums helping to support people that have been buying my parts. My evaluation comes from my experience working with the parts in various circuits along with specifications and my electronics background. Anyone with practical experience with those parts in vaping should be given priority to my opinion.
