Ok guys finally finished the box now I just need to get a matches set of batteries cracked my lid trying to figure out the best way to get the magnets in

That looks nice I epoxy the magnets into mine iv just finished my second box mod.

I use a 1/4 drill bit and just go a little at a time test fit magnet and repeat when they sit flush with the lid, little dab of epoxy when the dry fit looks good...

Hey everyone, glad to see this thread still doing so well. This will in fact be a historical thread in the modding community ....for those that can suck it up and pretend this is not VJ's site. Boy what a douche :)

Anyhow, I just finished up a box using @DIY FancyLights microFET/PWM package. Here's a few pics, great little circuit and awesome PCB design.

It's a 1550P enclosure, very tight space. I'm not a huge fan of liquid elect tape but on the 1550P's those contacts come way to close for comfort.

Under a heavy load during stress testing the board did not get hot. I pushed almost 300watts with a .2 build at 100% value to give it some abuse and took some temps with my infa-red temperature gauge, everything stayed under 60 degrees with a 10% </> fluctuation under load.

Here's some other recent boxes. This 1590G PWM was donated last week as the grand price for a local cloud comp this Saturday...

They are injection molded nylon 66 (zytel). I don't have them available yet. These are just the samples. Still need to do a production run.

This thread is one of the greatest things to ever come from the internet. Ok, maybe that's overstating things a bit. :) I've been looking into building a Mod for over a year but never bit the bullet. I've been reading up on mods for a very long time and following this thread forever as well. I've finally decided to bite the bullet and can't wait to get started. I've been building DIY electronic gadgets for years now, so I went through a bunch of boxes of my electronics and have everything I need, several different MOSFET's, buttons, caps, you name it. I have an old IPV 3 that went capooey awhile back, so I figured I'll reuse the box and 510. Hopefully I can find some time this week to make a decent Sub-ohm VV LR HV mod based on all of the great information this thread contains. I've gotta say, the community on this board is top notch so I had to sign up. This is my first forum ever - I'm very anti social - that's how much all y'all rock.

Just wanted to say thanks for everyone's info, dedication, and helpfulness. Hope to be able to help contribute someday. Cheers!

With those contacts when the sled is sitting in box resting on the boss edge of enclosure, does the bottom contacts hit the bottom of box?

The plastic of the holder won't prevent the contacts from touching the wall. Some of the 3d prints I made did rest against the screw boss (you can see this in post 2nd to last pic http://vapingunderground.com/threads/basic-mosfet-wiring.2361/page-14#post-833906). For the mold however, I made the corner cutout over sized. Altering the model for molding (adding proper drafts to the vertical faces) and well as making sure there was another clearance for the different radii for the 1590G variants available (hammond, modcrate, aplinetech, dripp3d, others...) are why the corner cutout was changed.

With a series link wire soldered in place, as long as the insulation is thick enough, it can rest against that wall. Like shown here (clear packing tape added for extra security):

Just out of curiosity, I see 99% of these box mods using MOSFETs. I was looking at my supplies and came across an SCR (thyristor) that I have, an HC106D. Started thinking that maybe I could stir things up and look into using an SCR since it seems like a great option if I want to include a bunch of newer ideas and safety features in my box mod, such as voltage protection/discharge, PWM, USB pass through charging, etc. Seems like an SCR would be the best choice for implementing such things, although I'm still VERY noob in electronics, so maybe not.

Anyhoo, did some googling to see if anyone else had done a mod using SCR's and I saw this Yihi SX350 chip for a box mod. I couldn't find any datasheets for it, but it has ALL of the gimmicks I was looking to put into my mod I'm about to start on. This thing is loaded with features! I'm betting their board is based on SCR IC. Does anyone know, or have knowledge of using an SCR for a box mod?

Although all of the kits, chips, boards, etc. that you folks have created or posted on this thread are very well done, I'm anal in the fact that I like to make EVERYTHING my own, from scratch, like starting a fire by rubbing sticks together rather than buying a match from a gas station. I also want to contribute some unique ideas to this community, so I thought if I took on this endeavor of doing an SCR based mod, I could help enlighten myself and perhaps bring something new to the table.

I know I should probably have posted this as a new thread, but I wanted to make sure I got the attention of you folks on this thread because I think you guys are top notch. If I end up going down this SCR mod road, I will start a new thread about this, asking questions, posting updates, etc.

Yeah, this is what I was talking about. I'm betting the YIHI is using SCR instead of MOSFET, but there's no way to tell unless they specifically come out and tell ya right? Looking at this Yihi chip, it has most if not all of the things I wanted to implement in my own custom build. Problem is, I've never used an SCR before, so I don't know if I could pull it off with the limited knowledge I have of electronics.

Why not just buy the Yihi you may ask? Because I'm OCD and have to build everything myself from scratch. Although, I guess I wouldn't be building the thyristor or batteries or any other component myself . . .heh. Going to search the forums, see who has tried this chip.

@Laggin The SX350 is a great chip for lower watts with out TC. I have done 2 builds with it and love the chip. The SX350 I think is limited to 60 watts on the last update. The SX350J chip is what Wabah Linked above. I have never used the chip but it has had alot of great reviews from the modders and people using the SXMini mod.

ha ha ha, nice David. Crazy, the OP on your link sounds just like me, like some twin I never knew. That's oddly funny. Nice find. As for the cons that were posted on that thread, I've studied about ways to overcome those, such as the voltage drop, the "desire" for the SCR to want to stacy on, etc. But yes, even if I could overcome those things, it still is likely too complicated for me to do. If I did go the SCR route at this point, I would in fact buy theSC3X50j chip that Oggy pointed out. I was looking at that the other night, although the j chip doesn't support the USB passthrough for battery charging, so who knows which YIHI I'd go with.

In any case, you've all convinced me to K.I.S.S. and go with a MOSFET (I'll do two actually, only because I actually put my batteries in backwards today, go figure), so there's one "regulation" I should probably make sure I have in my box mod. ha! :)

First off, thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread. Got me building with micro switches and tactile buttons instead of big plunger knobs that contact the battery! Seriously appreciate the info and art shared here. I have a question about Pchannel FET's. I really don't want to use one because of the high internal resistance, but I was gifted a VaporFlask clone with dead electronics and wanted to convert it to an unregulated. The batteries use the case as their ground however. So my options (as I see it) are
1 Put the batteries in backwards and wire the center pin as the neg.... (don't really want to do this)
2 Use a Pchannel MOSFET
3 Completely isolate the 510 connector from the rest of the mod (not that hard, I can make an acrylic top plate)
Considering I plan to keep the charging board and add a voltage meter and possibly a low-voltage cut-off from DIYfancylights, what would be the best option. If it IS to use a Pchannel, Is there a comparably rated one to the IRL3034b?
 
I have my mosfet wired exactly like this diagram, but with a simple momentary 3a button. With or without the button installed, as soon as you install the battery - it starts firing. I'm very confused. Tried 2 different mosfets and same result. I'm using the 3034n from digikey just like a ton of other people use. The other difference from the diagram is that I'm using dual 18650's instead of a single. Any ideas why it might be auto firing? I did get it to work for about 5 pulses and then it went back to auto firing.
Over heated it when ya soldered it.

What does everyone think of the mosfet Si7157DP made by Vishay. It's a P fet, and surface mount, but what do you think about using one of these on a small PCB along with a surface mount resistor?

Potentiometer. That is likely a PWM (pulse width modulation) mod or possibly an OKR, OKL or Raptor. If you are making an unregulated mosfet mod, you cannot simply add a potentiometer and be able to adjust the output. Additional circuitry is required.

Hello all, I'm a new member, new vaper and new mod maker here. I read this whole thread, drooled at all of the excellent builds and thought I'd join in on the fun with pics of my first build.

But first, a little about myself. I just started vaping about a month and a half ago after smoking for over 30 years. But I quickly got hooked on this awesome,life saving hobby! I started with a Kanger Subvod Mega TC with a Toptank Mini. A week later I upgraded to an iStick 200w with a V.C. Buddha Zephyr. So I started building my own coils that same week and after seeing other peoples and pics of custom box mods, I wanted to build one my self. So I bought a Pac-Man Arcade candy tin and I built myself a single 18650 mosfet mod. The wiring space was very tight but it works great and was a lot of fun! I used a FDV v4 510 low profile, 12mm switch, a dual Keystone sled that I cut in half, 14awg silicone wire for everything but the switch which has 20awg. An IRLB3034 N-chan. Mosfet, a 15k ohm resister and a Sony VTC4. I started on the side of safety with a .84 single coil build in my Wismec Theorem but it was a pretty weak hit, so I tried my Toptank mini RBA with a .32 Clapton and it hits so much better. So now I can't wait to build my next mod!

Builds in tight spaces was part of my incentive for making the microFET board to save space around the NFET while simplifying wiring.

I made a Vaping Underground MOSFET box mod board, if interested, preliminary design...I might end up having to make another via hole for another wire, otherwise you will have to make a "Y" + battery cable...

2 layer board of 0.62x1.19 inches (16x30mm). $3.70 for three.

Any of the TO220 style N-Type MOSFETS, and any 1/4 watt resistor, cut the center leg, it's ground...that huge ground plane is now ground, solder any momentary switch on SW1 and SW2, solder the BAT+ to the center pin on the 510 connector, solder GND to the 510 outer housing....fire that puppy up :)

Here are some VERY good TO220 style MOSFETS
@Warhawk-AVG , Do you still have any of the mosfet boards? If so, I'd like to get 3 of them.
