expert reaction to meta-analysis looking at e-cigarette use and smoking cessation

Ah, this isn't good news imo, it basically says that persons using ecigs are LESS likely to quit smoking ... not at all what I would have expected personally. :(

It is saying that the research methods are badly flawed and the research is useless. Kind of what i expected when i read the first bit about it making it less likely to quit.

They had the question "have you ever used an ecig?" in the context of even just a single draw on one. That makes the whole study BS.

I think for many e cigs do keep smokers smoking. Rather than just quit, they vape where they can't smoke and continue smoking when they can...

Prof. Peter Hajek, Director of the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), said:

E-cigarettes are a major development in public health. It is unfortunate that their potentially huge positive impact is being hindered by excessive regulations triggered by misleading suggestions.”

Entirely plausible theory. I've met my share of dual-users. Anecdotal evidence gathered from personal experience suggests they're far fewer in number than those that use vaping to quit completely, but so far as I know there are no solid numbers on who uses e-cigs or why.

I guess I'm a dual user.I can go for long periods of time not smoking, but then I will have a smoke...my smoking has gone down so dramaticly and continues to taper off that I'm confident it's just a matter of time of time before it tapers off altogether...for alot of us vaping is a nicotine replacement tool, usually old hard core smokers...but for the more emotionally and mentally unstable vaping is some form of self identity some need to belong to a tribe,a cult.

There is no other explanation for smoking rates among teens to have fallen the most in the past 4 years than any other 4 years in the history of Americas biggest youth (13 to 19) smoking survey that pre dates my existence on earth.

The smoking rate hadn't changed much at all from 2005 to 2010 but then from 2011 to 2015 it takes a nose dive at the exact time that vaping takes off?

Tobacco control should not be allowed to take credit for what vaping did.

They haven't changed anything, same old boring NRT and quit lines.

Stan cherry picked studies that already excluded vapiers who already switched vaping and some of the studies were from smokers who had already tried vaping and failed.

The exact same meta analysis was done in the UK using non cherry picked studies and the exact opposite results were found.

Stan the mechanic had this study done for a year and it just got published.
I wonder how many medical journals he submitted it to that didn't accept it before he found one crooked enough to give it a pass?

There should be a law that if a journal rejects a paper it should be disclosed on the paper itself.
That would solve the problem of integrity in scientific studies,

The smoking rate has gone down because the price of cigarettes has gone up...

it's really this simple....if vaping didn't work the tobacco industry wouldn't be rushing to get into the vaping market.

Big Tobacco wants dual users. They want their customers to smoke where they can and vape where they can't...

I think there's alot of truth to that...I heard that alot from smokers the price is driving them out of smoking...for me personally not at all ....but for other people it is a real decideing factor

They just buy generic/black market/roll your own or smoke less.
The price of cigarettes rose the most dramatically in the united states between 2005 and 2010 when they more than doubled in cost.
The rise in quitting occurred from 2011 to 2015 at the exact time the rise in vaping occurred.

Don't let Tobacco control trick you into believing that vaping didn't play a major role in the reduction in smoking over the last decade.

I started smoking at 15 years old and bought my first pack maybe a year or two later - it was 10 bucks at the time and I told myself I'd quit if I ever had to pay 13 for a pack. Then 13 a pack came along and I tried to quit but in Canada especially vaping wasn't a thing or a big thing and I stayed quit maybe a 3 months but I went right back to smoking. I made a new deal that at 15 bucks I'd quit. This past August it hit 15 bucks and I was ready to quit, I walked out of the gas station & into a vape shop. For me the price triggered it but it's vaping being readily available that has made it so I have been able to stay completely quit and not tempted.
