Question on Nic lvl to quit smoking NOOB

So im new to vaping. I have some turd mod my brother gave me and a Aspire triton v2 that i bought. The guy at the shop got me all messed up and told me if i want to quit i need to be at 50w. It tasted so burnt so i thought it must just be a bad juice. Then reading today i found that my coil was not rated for that....

Any how I was not happy with the mod. It was ugly beat up and when id go out I was honestly kinda embarassed by it. So today I bought a Aspire Odyssey mini kit for the look mainly and I was happy with how the triton tank was.

Heres the thing, I really want to quit smoking. Its affecting my relationship, my gf doestn want me to kiss her and wont let me inside her house or around her family because I stink, i have a 4 year old son that I want to play with till the day i pass, and to be honest im not the same in the bedroom as i get winded really fast. I am the type of smoker where i smoke a pack of camel lites a day. Now with the vape I like to hit it over and over as if i were smoking a cigg. When i started I got a 12mg in vanilla and it tasted awful kinda like pepper. It was some cheapo brand. Now I have Fivepawn gambit in 6mg. I like the flavor although it seems to not taste the same after an hour of use. Problem is I still want a cigg. Not as much but I still want one fairly often.

My question is this. I am very new to this. Is it better to start with a tobacco flavor initially to quit smoking? And also does higher mg nicotine ejuice have a pepper flavor or in a quality juice is nicotine flavorless? Also any advice on this endeavor would be great. Thanks guys.

The "cheapo" brand folks use the cheapest ingredients they can get by with, and that includes nicotine. Cheap nic will give you that "pepper" taste. And I can't even guess what brands of cheap flavoring they're using.

Welcome to VU Brondondolon!

Unfortunately, preferences vary from person to person. Whether you choose to start off with a normal tobacco flavor or a fruity flavor might not change your normal everyday cravings for cigarettes, however it would be a good idea to stick with whatever tastes good to you and go from there. When people go into Vape shops to test out new flavors, the testers (more times than not) are 0 mg, so it's more difficult to get an accurate reading on how the juice is going to taste once you get it nic'd up. In the beginning, it's just a long drawn out process of trial and error. Stick with what tastes good to you and continue moving forward from there. The higher the nicotine content of the e-juice will produce more of a similar sensation to the burn from the smoke that you're used to. That may help contribute to managing your cravings. Good luck my friend, Vape on!

TL;DR *Sry for the long winded post, I started this just to say IMO no you shouldn't vape tobacco flavors when trying to stop smoking, it's easier to quit smoking when you break yourself from that nasty taste. In-fact that taste is 90% of the battle you'll be fighting.

Just wanted to post a quick opinion regarding your question about weather to vape tobacco flavors initially, let me preface this by saying I'm no expert, but I've been DIYing my liquid since day one. And for 32yrs I was a heavy duty roll my own pipe tobacco smoker. Camel filters were like smoking air to me. And I didn't count my cigs by how many packs I smoked I counted by how many pounds of tobacco I bought month. 3 weeks after buying my first real tank/mod I quit and can't even imagine going back.

In my opinion, No you should not vape tobacco's, the reason I say that is, no vape will taste like a cigarette to you, I don't even know if vape can be made to taste that nasty, plus the fact that vape is well 'vapor' not smoke, it literally feels different in your mouth and throat so you will never duplicate a cigarette with vape. Plus I bet you didn't start smoking because it tasted good, you started because you got a buzz off it, remember?

Flavor is going to be your primary battle, you will be getting your nicotine through vaping, and it will not take your body long at all to tell you that you don't 'need' a cigarette, but you will find that your still want that flavor. I tell everyone switching from cigs to vaping is easy, the only real battle is breaking yourself from the taste of cigs. Like I said you're getting you're nicotine no problem, but if you're trying to vape something that constantly reminds you of the flavor of cigs but isn't quite there it's just far too easy to pick one up to satisfy that need. Another tip stay away from the 18mg-22mg nic, 8-12 is plenty if you have even a decent tank/mod because you will be taking in more nicotine faster than you do from a cigarette. And you don't want to be a situation where you now taking on more nicotine daily than you did while smoking. Plus no matter what nic you using at those high levels you're going to taste and feel it in your mouth and throat as a harshness, if you feel yourself catching a buzz again like you did when you first started smoking your vaping to much nicotine and just like cig's that buzz will fade fast then you're just hooked on even more nic than before. If you need 'throat hit' that feeling you get in the back of your throat, higher levels of PG like 70pg/30vg will give you what you want without sacrificing taste and that can be achieved without any nicotine at all if you want. Or you can go the smooth as silk route with high vg blends.

You'll have to figure out for yourself how much nic you need, but you shouldn't put it in you head that you have to stop nicotine, in fact I've learned it's not the nic that really messes you up, it's all the other crap in cigs. I like my nicotine, it picks me up when I need it and calms me down when I need it, and vaping I never get the cravings or nervousness like I did when I was smoking. It's amazing just how many of the negative effects of cigs go away when you start vaping, even though you're getting your nicotine.

The hand mouth thing is easier by simply keeping you rig in your hand and letting yourself get used to the shape and weight, it doesn't take long for that to be what you need in your hand instead of a cig between your fingers. Also what helped me a lot when I trying to switch to vaping was finding drip tip that is about the same size as cig filter, the one I use is the same width as a cig and it's long enough that between the two it feels almost like a cig in my mouth. (Link)(Same width just shorter) As with all vaping, the drip tip that makes you happy is the best one to use. Vaping isn't a one size fit's all kinda thing, and that's just cool!

Set realistic goals for yourself, don't even try to quite smoking day one or week one, you kinda have to learn how to vape first, what flavors you like what temps you like, and then just start substituting a cig here and there for a vape. Just be-careful that your not vaping and smoking at the same time. It's easy to do, especially when you first start because you juice has actual flavor and your most likely programmed to smoke anytime flavor hits you mouth.
Then when you think your ready, one morning when you wake up pick up your vaporizer instead of cig and don't look back, your no longer a smoker now your a vaper!

Lastly when seeking help or advice, keep in mind that the guy working in your local vape shop (or online store), he needs to sell the stuff in his shop, he may be on commission, most make their on e-juice so of course theirs is the best even if it's made with cheap ingredients. And the tank he has in that case, that's the best dam tank on the planet! Your best source of honest information will be found right here on VU.

Well good luck to you, you've found a place here at VU full of good people and tons of information, and vaping has the wonderful benefit of being a social activity, you become part of a welcoming community.

Later,
Glass

First of all congratulations on taking the first steps to tobacco independence! I will tell you how I made the switch. I started vaping in earnest around the time that ego style battery kits became popular. The very first set up I bought was a 900mah stick battery and a plastic ce4 style tank. The liquid I got with the kit was a caramel tobacco at 18mg nic level. I quit that very day but I was very ready to do so. Within a few months I was trying as many flavors that I thought would taste good. So finding some flavors you really like is definitely a must. We didn't have sub ohm tanks back then so the higher nic juice was needed satisfied my cravings. I went to a mechanical mod and a dripper within 6 months and lowered my nic to around 8mg. I then began to diy my own liquids and further lowered my nic level. I currently use 3mg to 6mg depending on if I'm dripping or using one of my sub ohm tanks. It took two weeks to wash my system of the many chemicals they added to the tobacco I used to smoke but once past that the cravings were gone and I began to really enjoy not smoking anymore. I will suggest a couple of things for you to try one is drink lots of water to stay hydrated while you vape. Check your area for shops and google them to see if they have decents reviews. Once you find a good one go try some of their juices and get some flavors you like. Throat hit is another thing you may need a strong one at first to stem those cravings. I would go with anywhere from 6mg up to 12mg and start out at a lower wattage and adjust it up if needed you'll find your sweet spot easier that way. Once you begin to be able to taste again and then be active without having to catch your breath you'll be glad you started this particular journey. I hope some of this helps you out.

I did the "tobacco" flavor for about 24 hours. Then I started enjoying stuff... Could've quit right on the spot -- Although admittedly, over the course of January, I polished off the pack I opened the evening of December 31st. Probably 12-15 cigs over the month. And man -- After tasting the wonderful flavors out there (and dealing with a bout or two of "vaper's tongue"), most of those occasional cigs (usually at night before bed) tasted horrible.

Can't believe I was doing that 30-ish times every day for decades... And yes - the smell... Yech...

Anyway -- I'd suggest getting a flavor you think you'll really enjoy and maybe try something you wouldn't really even consider.

6mg nic is a pretty decent place to be especially if you're running sub-ohm. I had one bottle of (something...) in 12mg and - well, I hated the flavor, so I went back to 6mg. My last bunch of bottles have been 0mg.

In any case - TAKE ADVANTAGE of that flavor -- It keeps you from having the munchies. Your taste buds are clearing up in ways they haven't known in a long time. And sans-smoking, you might fall into snacking (as soooo many former smokers do).

I find myself gravitating towards rich, creamy flavors that actually make *snacks* taste somewhat boring by comparison. To that end, I've lost a handful or so of pounds in the last month as a bonus. Find a local shop with a bunch of sample tanks lying around and go nuts for awhile.

Mmmm.... Nuts. Hazelnut coffee / vanilla custard...

Just my two cents, I only smoked for about 4 years but I started with a 12mg tobacco flavor. Took me about 2 months to completely quit cigarettes. I'm down to 3mg, and like sweet flavors the best now. I had a Sigelli 50w with a Kanger subtank. LOVED it. Lost it unfortunately. I'm back to using my original Kanger KBox and the Aspire Atlantis. Not bad but soon I'm looking to get at least a 75w box. Doing some research. Anyway, I did have to start with tobacco flavors, a pretty high nicotine level, now I couldn't imagine anything more than 3mg.

Sorry for the late response. You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the imput. So my aspire odyssey mini in gold came today. I initially filled it with my five pawn gambit. For me the flavor is amazing. But unfortunately I get vape tongue with it quick. Not to mention I don't think it's an all day vape because the flavor is so intense. So against recommendations I ended up getting a tobacco flavor (halo tribeca 6mg) so far I'm in love. It's not a flavor like "man this is delicious" but it's smooth and has a good throat hit. What is cool too is the aspire mini doesn't have a lot of air so it's kinda like a cigg. I'm a pack a day smoker and since noon I've only had 4 cigg where I'd normally have 10 or so. Thanks for all the imput guys.

Question though. I'm trying to get my mom to quit too but it makes he cough really bad. What can I do to help her? I gave her my box mod with a aspire triton 2 and filled it with five pawn gambit 6mg with a 1.5ohm coil at 20w vent wide open and she takes a tiny little puff and coughs her lungs up. Any advice on that one?

First of all, congrats on the end of smoking :) you will love trying all of the different flavors of juice out there. As for your Mom, if you haven't tried it already take the wattage down to about 8 or so and slowly work up on it to between 15-20. It might be getting too hot for her too soon, causing the cough. If her mod will do temp control the have her use the Aspire Triton TC coils and work the watts up to about mid-range for the coil and about 500-520 on the temp. Hope this helps her :). If anyone else has other ideas on helping Brondondolon's Mom, jump right in.

I am definitely not the most knowledgeable vaper out there but I would try to get her to start on maybe a little eGo style batt with just a little tank to get her used to it. Alot of folks start of on this type of setup. Maybe someone could point you in the right direction on this because as I said they know more than I. I started of in the wrong direction buying expensive crappy stuff till I got my MVP. :)

Holee crap I never knew that. Makes perfect sense too. That's an important little tidbit. Thanks.

Ha not all the time.

I remember the second time I went to the vape shop was to try and buy some juice. I sat in there for 2 hours and talked and bullshitted around with the guy working the counter (really cool dude) and tried a dozen or 2 flavors. A couple were 0, but most were at least 3 with a couple 6. By the time I left the shop I was totally nic'd out and sick lol. Did walk out with half a dozen good flavors though, and so began my addiction to trying new stuff.

To OP: I started on 6mg and I dual used (smoking and vaping) for about a month before finally dropping the smokes. Dont feel pressured to quit the cigarettes cold and on the spot when starting vaping. Its still hard to do, even with a vape. What I did was try to replace the cigarettes as much as possible with vapes, until one day I ran out of smokes and just kept on vaping.

A tip that worked for me was this: When you feel like you need a cigarette, pick up your vape and just hit on it for 5 minutes while doing whatever it is your doing. If after 5 minutes you still feel like you need a cigarette, then go have one, but more often than not youll find youve forgotten about wanting a cigarette and youve just gone about what you were doing, pre occupying your mind. It worked pretty well for me. The hardest ones to stop are the smokes that are ritualistic, like the first one in the morning, last one before bed, after eating, break time at work, etc. For those what worked for me was going to the same place Id normally smoke and just vape instead. Like Id smoke at my back door in the morning, instead I just stoof there and vaped, and it helped a lot.

Good luck man, this place is full of people with stories like yours whove quit the cigs and have stayed off for years. It can be done.

This is for the OP, sorry if I'll cover issues already brought up by others this is just the impressions of someone whose vaped for 3+ years after smoking for over 20 years.

1. The vape shop guy is wrong. You should vape at the power (watts) that satisfies you and doesn't make your juice taste burnt or icky (assuming you're vaping good juice--cheap juice often tastes like shit because it is cheap for a reason).

2. You should be using the head (the part that contains the juice and coil) and device you like. If a kanger T-3 on an ego twist works for you great, if you need a powerful box mod and to sub-ohm great. What matters is what you need to quit smoking. And that is all that matters.

3. Nicotine strength. Some have different opinions, but I am of the opinion you need the amount of nicotine you need to quit. I needed 24mg to quit (even if I rapidly stepped that down--and incidentally that is how I got into diy juice because going from 24 to 18 was too big of a jump, but 24 was too much). So if you need to sub-ohm 12mg do it. If you are fine with 3mg that's great too. What matters is what nicotine strength you need to quit. If it is too much, you're body will tell you because you will over-nic, if it is too little, you'll know that too. If you need something between common levels of nic, you can pick up PG or VG or both relatively cheaply, just make sure it is USP grade and you'll be fine.

4. You should vape the flavors you like to vape. Personally I needed a tobacco flavor to quit, I was fortunate that my local B&M had one that was reminiscent of toasted Cavendish pipe tobacco. That said if you expect an e-liquid that tastes exactly like a combustible cigarette or any other form of combustible tobacco forget it. Vaping lacks the combustion and therefore it is impossible to completely recreate that taste (though I would argue why would you want to). As your taste buds and sense of smell return you may find that you don't like tobacco flavors, or a flavor you used to like. I've gone through so many different flavors over the years it is unreal. The only real standbys I have that I've consistently vaped these past three years are watermelon (of a candy type) and straight up menthol (and I never really smoked menthol anything).

That being said many people also want to get as far away from the taste of tobacco as possible. It is totally your call as to what works for you. My only suggestion really is to find a flavor you like enough to prefer it over smoking. It could be a Marlboro flavor or it could be maple hazelnut crunch coffee for all anyone else cares.

5. As a mixer, I can say that cheaper nicotine (and yes I've used it when money was tight) can have a peppery taste. Good nicotine doesn't have much of a taste at all. If you ever become a DIY juice mixer I strongly recommend Wizard Lab's nicotine.

i quit on an atlantis tank with 12mg juice. everyone at the shop and online tried to tell me twelve was too strong for my setup but it helped by being too strong imo. i would vape until i was 'done', like borderline dizzy and gross feeling. feeling that way is a bad time to smoke a cigarette, so it would make my smoke breaks really far apart. eventually i would pick up the vape and get dizzy again instead of having a real smoke. a couple weeks of that and i stopped buying smokes.

im on 6mg now (guy at the shop almost begged me to try stepping it down). i vape twice as much juice (maybe more) than i ever did at 12, but its a bit nicer vape. now that the hard work (quitting cigarettes) is over, im happy to ease up and see vaping as an enjoyable thing to do, instead of a tool to achieve a goal.

best of luck

For me to successfully go Cold Turkey I was using e-Cigs which come at 1.5 to 1.8 and I used 2.4% e-Liquid to refile them. When I went to a MOD iStick TC40W/Nautilus Mini I immediately lowered Nicotine to .6% and I mixed store bought .6% and 1.2% or 1.8% to achieve .9% to 1.5% or so. Now with DIY'ing my own e-Liquids I am down to3MG's. Still putting a little higher in for little kick but it appears I have the Nic Addiction to where I can manage it successfully.
