So here is my predicament. I vape and have been for almost a year but have smoked on and off through that time. Stress never helps. I have been a week without cigs and I'm back to feeling great. I smoked for about 5 years and my parents, as far as I know, never knew. If they did it was unspoken off.

My dad has been smoking since he was about 15, so about 30 years. He has a terrible smokers cough and actually went to the doctor for an issue that they said could have been because of smoking. Other than smoking he is in great health. Now, I want him to get off the cigs but do not know how to approach that situation. The difficult part is that since he did not know I smoked, he doesn't know I vape now. I spoke to my mom about some friends who quit when they got back from over seas due to using an ecig but I don't think she ever brought it up to him.

I want to help my dad so I don't have to say goodbye to him when he is still younger and has plenty of life left to live. Similar to many of you may know, the father-son bond is one of the strongest things so of course I want to help him since he has help me with everything the last 24 years.

HI pjerzy, It may not be the easiest thing to do but trust me loosing a parent is much harder than admitting that you too once smoked but now have found a much healthier way of keeping the smoking addiction at bay. It may not be what you wanted to hear butt I assure you the conversation wont be as bad as not speaking your concerns over his health. Make the conversation about him and your concern for him and that you want him around for a long time. Tell him of your experience and assure him that you will be there for support guidance and guidance. The two of you can even have vape hang out sessions if thats in the cards. He will appreciate your concern for him and although he may be somewhat miffed that you vape now and were an active smoker, that will go away with his realization that you found a healthier alternative. Hope that helps and I dont mean to offend just offer a little pc of advice from an guy who is just a little older than your dad and want to be around alot longer.

No such thing as smoking without your family knowing.
If your mom doesn't smoke she can smell it.

^^ I tried to pretend my parents didn't know for a long time. They did. I started smoking regularly when I was 15-16 and I know as hard as I may have tried to hide it they knew.

Talk to your dad, approach it from a "this is because I care about you" perspective and I think he will understand. Plus, knowing that it worked for you should be a huge motivation for him to at least try it out.

Fathers Day is coming. Couldn't you get him a setup as a thoughtful gift without bringing your vaping into it? Maybe your mother will pitch in if it is too expensive for you.

As a father myself, thanks for being a loving and supporting son to your own dad!

Just to get this out of the way..........................................

Just how sure are you that your folks did not know of your smoking habit?

And like the Owl said, Fathers day gives you an excuse to get him set up with a nice rig of his own.

Something that is easy to use and maintain.

I would suggest the Sigelei 30 watt mini $36. A pair of batteries $12, perhaps a couple of Kanger ProTank 2s $10 ea ? A couple of pack of heads $6 ea and then an assortment of E-Liquids in different flavors (but not tobacco).

And if a kit like this runs to a total outside of your budget, get the rest of the family to kick in or get a couple of good eGo batteries, mini tanks and heads and liquids.

Why not tobacco? The tobacco flavor was what worked best for me for the initial quit. I had this Freedom Smoke USA tobacco flavor that tasted like a cigarette left under an Arizona car seat for the summer that got me through the tough times.

The other non tobacco flavors didn't do it for me until I hit phase 2 of quitting: the return of my taste buds.

Wow thanks for all the help. The Father's Day thing wouldn't be bad. But price doesn't matter. I mean come on. He is my dad. So that's an option.

As far as them not knowing. It was never brought up. It was unspoken of so can only go buy them not knowing. They brought it up when they smelled the fresh smell of dry herbs on me in my younger days. I don't do that anymore with a full time job, new car, and place of my own. I'm a "good kid" now I guess. Just vape and bourbon for me.

Buy him a quality starter kit for Father's Day. Include a half dozen small bottles of juice, and yes include a couple tobacco flavors. Beginners want tobacco flavors till they find something they like. 18 mg should do. UncleRJ got it right. Good luck

IMHO, finding a really good tobacco flavor can be difficult. Especially since you are purchasing for someone else and taste differ so much from one person to the next.

When I first started vaping, the tobacco flavors I tried were absolutely disgusting. But I really liked the candy and beverage flavors and those were enough to keep me at it long enough to get me off smoking.

And until I could find a tobacco flavor that did not taste like shit and smell like old gym socks!

Write up something thoughtful for the card like your third paragraph in the opening post and hope for the best. Remember someone who has smoked as long as your father won't quit until he is ready. Don't take it personally if he doesn't take to it right away. It's a crazy addiction. Worse case, he'll have it on the shelf for when he is ready and you can always sneak in and recharge the batteries every few months so he has the best chance of success.

I also think it helps to sell vaping as tool to cut down. Quitting is a trigger word for smokers.

I do think that getting a good tobacco flavor is key for some people. My girlfriend resisted vaping for months until I was able to find the right tobacco for her. I have a basket of 15 different flavors. She has a box with multiple bottles of the same tobacco flavor. Some people just really need to make it as similar to cigs as possible.

I'd go online and order a handful of tobacco flavors for your dad to try with your gear. Once he finds one he thinks will work then get him a starter kit (nautilus and an Istick are what have been working for the GF for 6 months now)

A good Ry4 might be a good choice as far as ejuice is concerned. Hopefully that is helpful in this case.

    Here is my recommendation:
    Rocka Mystic - Amsterdam Slam
A nostalgic bakery enhanced tobacco, with hints of Vanilla and Bourbon.

Father's Day? We should have a vapers day, then we'll have more excuses to buy people starter kits:)

I was a 2 pack a day smoker for over 25 years (marlboro light 100s) and my smokers cough was such that I couldn't bend over without going into a terrible coughing fit.

I tried the patch but ended up wearing the patch AND smoking. Tried the gum, but that didn't work either. Wasn't about to try the pill, not with the potential side effects. My father tried the pill, though, and it didn't work for him (he eventually died from lung cancer). The only thing that worked for me was an ecig. I started with direct dripping a 901 and then the 510. Neither of these old models produce much of a vape, but I was using 36mg (and still do, even with my dual coil RDA). Anyway, for 2 years I still had to have 2 or 3 cigs in the morning and again right before bed. The rest of the time, though, I used my ecigs. Eventually I was able to completely quit cigs. My smoker's cough disappeared completely after I switched. After listening to my lungs, my doc was so impressed that he began recommending ecigs to his patients that were unable or unwilling to quit smoking.

You're welcome to tell your father my story about my smoker's cough and how ecigs cured it. Hopefully he'll listen. And, like others have mentioned, I'd try giving him a kit that's all ready to go.
