As E-cigarettes soar in the US, could they really steer teenagers away from smoking?

“This is a really bad thing,” said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the director of the C.D.C., who noted that research had found that nicotine harms the developing brain. “This is another generation being hooked by the tobacco industry. It makes me angry.”

" The decline in cigarette use among teenagers accelerated substantially from 2013 to 2014, dropping by 25 per cent, the fastest pace in years."

So Tom Frieden thinks that is a "bad" thing and "It makes me angry" like a child who dropped his pacifier.
It makes him so mad that teen smoking is at the lowest point ever.
Lowest since they started keeping track!

"Anti-tobacco advocates have suggested e-cigarettes would become a gateway to cigarettes among youth. In Sweden and Norway, a rise in the use of snus, asmokeless tobacco product, was followed by a sharp decline in cigarette use.

“They’re not a gateway in, and they might be accelerating the gateway out,” said David B. Abrams, executive director of the Schroeder Institute for Tobacco Research and Policy Studies, an anti-tobacco group."

See, some in tobacco control have this thing.
It's called common sense.

Every teen that vapes is a teen that doesn't smoke.

Don't we all wish these things were around when we started smoking? - 5150

large increase in high school vapers in spokane, wa...
neighbor is a school bus driver and is constantly telling the kids to put 'em away on the bus...
most are using the aspire cf series batteries with various tanks, some are sporting mechanicals w/ rebuildable drippers, and a few have the high wattage boxes with various atomizers...
about half are using 0 nic, about a third of the kids say mom or dad bought them their setups...
take away what you will from the the above information...alternative to smoking is great
vaping 0 nic to fit in or be cool...not so much
the fact that some parents are purchasing these setups for their kids speaks volumes in and of itself...
the good dr's percentages are a bit askew...nationwide teen smoking has declined 13 % over the last 2 years
and vaping has increases 21 % just in the last 14 months...
when asked what drew them to vaping...they dont stink, the plethora of flavors, better than smoking, were the top answers from these teens
also a pretty even split between boys/girls
hookah usage, these same kids flood the hookah parlors on fridays and saturdays but dont tell their folks...
interesting what a bus driver can gleen from kids just in friendly conversation going to or from school...

Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, the director of the C.D.C. refuses to accept any position that will lead to anything but abstinence. Changing this position would force CDC to accept less harmful tobacco products and e-cigarettes. CDC will never accept the use of e-cigarettes and youth in the same discussion.
CDC RECOMMENDATION:The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that one of the major goals of any tobacco control program should be to promote quitting among both young people and adults.1
