Hi all, just came across something you techies might find cool, but also wanted to check and see if I should be getting excited about this.

Basically, my local guys are promoting something called the tastr, and it looks like the idea is that you don't need flavours of e-liquid to use it. They are saying it lets you try e-liquid online, and it uses some kind of techno wizardry to replicate flavours digitally.

Sounds pretty awesome, if it works. What does everyone think?

Imaged attached if you want a look

    I am calling bullshit.

On the device and those promoting it, not on the OPoster here.

However it is suspicious being their first post.

Valid point, but im more active in tech forums than vaping, but the tech boys aren't too in to the idea until they see a proof of concept. If i admit it, this is my first post on a vaping forum ever, so I bow to the wisdom of you lot on this

With taste being so subjective, I just don't see this as being successful, but I've been fooled before.

No way that device can accurately reproduce complex odors.
Also it would require some sort of vapor medium or a similar substance to transport the odors/flavors.

you cannot make different odors from nothing.
It might be able to duplicate the odor of fried electronics well though :)

Yeah I'm kinda with Cromwell here, this seems like it won't be able to do jack shit. If it does anything I can maybe see unflavored e juice? If it does indeed change flavors via download or whatever, I feel like it will do it very shittily(that's a word) Within the next five years, I just don't see it being possible, maybe 20, but not holding my breath. If and when it does work, I don't see it being within very many people's price ranges, so it will probably be a commercial failure.

Side Notes: I'm glad people are trying new things, but this ain't gonna work. I wouldn't trust my e juice tastes to something like that, sorry but I like to control what goes in my tank. Looks interesting though.

Looking at the video on there web site it doesn't produce much vapor. They also say they will be coming out with an e-juce line for it.
    WTF I call shenanigans.

    More aroma therapy stuff?

I can maybe see a future for this device in the area of aroma therapy.

Also they say sub ohm was one of the biggest advancements in vaping? I like sub ohm style, but no variable wattage is one of the biggest in my mind.

Agreed Variable wattage/voltage is the biggest single advancement in vaping.

The biggest single advancement in vaping is the lithium ion battery of course.

Without it our devices would plug into the wall like the volcano vaporizer for the other stuff that has been around since the early 2000's

without li-on batteries vaping would not be portable.

people have been plugging huge dry herb vaporizers to the walls since the late 90's / early 2000's

Hon Lik's first design plugged in with a usb but the final design that started it all incorporated a small li-on battery

Now I'm imagining someone hooked up to their PC, and the countless fires and fried circuits from bad gear.

Some of the early home brew vapes ran off of a couple of AA batteries.

    Befoire my vape time.
When I started Cigalikes and Egos were the thing.
And a few mechs that tried to blow themselves up :)

So I gave them a call to check in on all the questions and they've said this:

    • Beta testers will be randomly selected to get one to test when it goes into a prototype
    • When they feel its ready to go out, they are going to give out as part of a subscription service to the site, which apparently will give you discounts and the like.
    • They also said that it'll be just for testers, so they don't want people spending very much on having one, its not a day to day device.
    • They also said that they won't ask for any money to sign up, be a tester or anything until it is actually released

They seem pretty open about it, they wouldn't let me know how much the subscription would be, but the guy I talked to said they haven't worked it out yet and they want to make sure its fair and reasonable. I think they'll be asking the testers themselves what they would pay for it, because they often do that with these sort of things.

    What do we think?

    Honestly.
I am extremely skeptical of it being a worthwhile device.

My first device (that wasn't an ego) was an MVP 2.0, blew my first O on that thing. Can't imagine having to vape on an 11w device now. Things definitely took off real fast.

Chemical make up isn't... Say 2 people licked a dog turd and one thought it tasted like strawberries and hazlenut and the other thought it tasted like french vanilla it wouldn't matter at all because it's still objectively a dog turd.

Without any Vapor there is no way to recreate the taste or sensation of vaping in my opinion. Tasting e-Liquid is not the same as vaping for me and no way this could fool me thinking I was tasting a vape.
