so ive been a joyetech evic mini fan since they came out. i knew they didnt do great TC, but with my SS316L wire builds it was always good enough. then monday i got a Vandy Vape Mesh RDA and im getting mixed results in regards to TCing the SS316L mesh. sometimes it works well then the next use will be far too hot. i rebuilt it with fresh mesh and then turned the heat up to see a glow. you can see the device attempting to do TC, but the fluctuations in power are so great. seems like a better chip would use smaller adjustments keeping a more accurate temp. then i remember reading about what the Arctic Fox guys said about how Joyetechs TC design is shit and not really even TCing. then i thought about installing AF firmware on my Evics, but im on a mac and it seems like a PITA honestly. so... its time i get a device with a chip that will accurately control the temp of both wire builds as well as mesh. and i think DNA is going to be my first attempt. having said all of that... can someone recommend devices that fit the specs below? or something cose? im currently eyeing the Lost Vape Therion and Paranormal.

    size: no larger than 90mm H - 55mm W - 27mm T

    wattage: at least 75

battery: 18650 (single cell mod if available! also a hinged battery door instead of magnets if pos)

chip: must be able to TC mesh

price: no more than $150. less is a bonus

so... what is my unicorn? any help is appreciated!

Check and see if Evolv Escribe is available for a Mac. Escribe is the only way to set them up. The new color screen DNA 75 can be setup on the mod but that's the only one so far. Arctic Fox does TC as well as a Joyetech chip can and you only get pulsing when the coil starts to dry out.

so its possible that i couldnt set up a DNA device on a mac? ugh. what chip can a mac user get and not have to jump through hoops to customize the TC. thats why they expect more money from their mods right?

the pulsing when dry makes sense as to why i saw it. i was running the coil dry with no wick so i could see the red glow and how it was applied to the mesh. so i figured, since i saw the pulse, that it was also pulsing during regular use considering i keep getting nasty hot and burnt tasting pulls. for some reason i am not able to properly TC the mesh and its pissing me off. lol

so if its not the shit “TC” design by Joyetch (which i still think it is)... what else could it be? would updating the joyetech firmware to the most current make any sort of dif?

i was all about set to start looking for the best deal on a therion or paranormal. but if i cant tweak a DNA board with a mac then ill have to look elsewhere. makes me want to start my own mod company.

Check Evolv's forum and see if they ported it for a Mac. The cost of software development and the hoops you need to jump through to get approved by Apple isn't really worth the cost for such a small user base considering the program is free.

I have Arctic Fox on all 4 of my Joyetech chipped mods and use TC exclusively so I can't help with the latest Joyetech firmware.
The best bet is to find a cheap used laptop running Windows, problem solved.

I never used mesh so I can't help with that but depending on how much power you need to get it hot it may not work well on any Joyetech mods in TC. My 3 battery RX200S an Eleaf 200W-TC don't like big power hungry builds in TC. Work fine in power mode but the ramp up is a bitch in TC. That said I do like using them and use them at least once everyday.

No, in fact Mac, Linux, and of course Windows are supported with their respective EScribe versions now. You won't go wrong with a Paranormal.

    https://forum.evolvapor.com/topic/69197-linux-escribe-suite-beta-thread/

Having said that, you could spend far less for a Modefined Sirius which also has the ability to set wattage automatically when doing TC.
I've had one for a spell and it produces a better vape for me than my DNAs, Yihi, Tesla, FSK, or any TC mod I've tried.
    I'm a SS430 .28 ohm, 450F kind of guy.

And, if you somehow didn't like it, could still get the Paranormal and not be out much cash as the Sirius is less than USD 50

Good to know someone ported it to Linux I'll have to give it a try. That's why I said check the Evolv forum. There's always some OCD software developer who likes to muck about with things.

great news! i really really REALLY hope this device will properly regulate the temp for my SS316L mesh. if i cant get consistent results using mesh then i guess ill have to give it up and go back to wire builds.

ill check out the sirius. what chip is in that one? have you run mesh in TC on one?

I have no idea what chip is in it besides the fact it isn’t a DNA or YiHi. All I can say is that it sets the wattage way better than I can do.
No mesh. I played with it a bit last time it was a thing and decided to stick with wire.

I have been using mods with DNA chips for a long time and they are really good especially for TC and being able to customize them. IMHO, since it's within your budget then you can't go wrong with a DNA 250 chip mod.

yeah been meaning to do that. will get on that tonight. ive got a buddy who has been testing his mesh builds with three dif DNA devices. all newer devices. says it flat out doesnt work on one, get mixed reaults from another, and gets great results from the third.

idk maybe the chipsets just arent ready for mesh yet. ill check out the evolve forum and see what i find. thanks!

Quick question: why mesh? There are a whole lot of better options out there that are a lot easier to work with. You need to watch for shorts a hell of a lot more... Warping.. Think there is better options for you.

easier to work with? ive been building for years and ive found nothing easier than installing mesh into the vandy vape mesh rda. on top of that, when its working, its easily the best vape ive ever had. but if the current chipsets arent ready for mesh then they just arent ready and ill stick to wire builds.

having said those things i am ok with sticking with wire. i just love the idea of perfect uniformity, surface area, and ease of install.

They're supposed to be releasing the DNA 250C board this month, according to an interview the owners of Evolv did with Pbusardo. I haven't seen anything else about it since the interview though, and I've been keeping an eye out. Hopefully we'll get some more info sometime soon. I can't speak for anyone else, but I'm anxiously awaiting the release. I'm ready to drop some dollas!

ill be honest. i will never need more than 75 watts. nor will i need more than a single 18650 device. a dual 18650 is ok too if its small.

its hard to be patient when my joyetech devices are pissing me off.

if you two are suggesting waiting simply for chips with yet even more wattage...? if so then ill pass. if the wait is for new/more features then im all ears.

This being the case, I'd recommend something with the 75C board. It's basically just a DNA 75 with a larger color screen and an extra button, allowing you to do everything right on the mod itself rather than having to hook it up to a computer to change or access certain features. There are quite a few nice mods out now that use it. The 250C will just be a high wattage version of the same thing. I can provide a few links to some DNA 75C mods later, but a quick google search would be your best bet.

yeah ive been eyeing the DNA75C stuff. the lost vape therion or paranormal are still top on my list. just wish they werent $150. considering there are higher wattage options of the same device youd think the lower wattage units would have a cheaper price tag. from what i can tell they are all $150 regardless of what wattage chip is in it. also, there are sooo many different combinations of the colors for these devices... can the material on the battery door on the therion be removed? or can different doors be purchased? i know there paranormal has different panels that can be purchased.

i know most black friday and cyber whatever deals are over... any coming for christmas? lol

EDIT: i was just checking out the DNA chips and wondering how hard it would be to install one of those DNA75 chips into my Evic Vtwo mini body. if the buttons lined up of course. i could care less about the usb slot lining up. i would also upgrade the wiring inside the Vtwo while im in there to make sure that 510 connection is solid. the size of the Evic mini with the power of a DNA chip? would be perfect for me. i know Hcigar has a nano DNA75, but its ugly as hell and they still want a $100 for it.

Not more wattage, more features. Mainly the color screen and the ability to change settings that used to need a computer directly on the mod.
I’ve vaped DNAs for awhile. After setting things the way I like them, I don’t touch settings. For me, dialing in a new tank/coil isn’t something I’m going to do away from home, so I will take advantage of the close out sales on the ‘old’ 250 chip mods.

If you do decide to go with a 75c, I’m going to guess it is no more efficient than the ‘old’ 75.
For me, battery life was too low. I vape TC at around 45-55W.

i dont see an advantage to waiting for a 200watt chip with color when the 75watt chip with color is currently available...? when ill never go over 60watts... usually around 40-50watts.

that bit about the battery life... youre saying the DNA75C was too aggressive on the battery for you? if its anywhere near how the Evic drains a cell then im on board. i dont chain vape. and 18650 usually lasts me more than a day with my Evic devices. so unless its worse than my vtc mini and vtwo mini then thats fine for me.

EDIT* what about the smoant charon? looks like a therion copy minus a DNA chip...? searching for reviews now.

Have at it. Too aggressive, nah, more like at the setting I vape at, other mods including the 133 and 166 DNAs last at least a full day. The 75 was well short of half a day. Which I why I passed it along and do not have a c.

Look, just pick a mod and enjoy. If you don't get a DNA, then you shouldn't spend more than ~USD 50 so if you get a lemon, pass it along or chalk it up to finding out that wasn't the mod for you.

As others have stated. With the new chips coming out, there is bound to be a large orice reduction on the current non color boards. I would highly recommend sticking to your idea to go DNA and not drift into posers. Mesh has a lot of surface area and i would assume this leads to possible dry hits even with the best temp control devices. I know I've heard that wicking is the most critical part.

Regardless.....go dna... it will give you a better chance to get temp control tweaked.

If you vape at 75 watts you'll be better with a dual battery mod and the lost vape therion option you mentioned would definitely be a good shout!
Welcome to TC world, you'll never go back once you get your RDA on one of them.
I've not tried mesh but hope your enjoying it :)

A good option for you will be the hohm slice. It's a single 26650. Does TC great and is more compact than a dual battery.
I personally prefer it too DNA or YiHi :)

ahh i see. so the extra features of the "C" board cause unwanted extra drain on the cell. is this simply because of the color? or are there other features on the "C" board causing more cell drain? if so can these features be turned off? i really like the idea of the color display, but if the color or other features cause me to switch cells twice as often then ill consider the standard DNA75.

i hope youre right about the older chipped devices seeing large price drops. and i hope its soon! the urge to purchase is getting harder to wait on. lol

i know the charon wont be up to DNA quality, but can you advise if the TC is better than say a Joyetech device? i ask because i may order a charon and get used to it while i wait for the DNA75 chip devices to reduce in price. heading to look at reviews for the charon now.

I think it's one of the best on the budget price range, aspire speeder is also a good option or the smoant battlestar.
Charon, battlestar and speeder are my top 3 for budget TC in no particular order.
Definitely better than joyetech. I found the TC lousy on the cuboid and vtc

Nope, just the 75 chip is not very efficient. No reviews or users mentioned the improved battery life with the C, so I'd say its the same.
Me? I'd get a 167 now and be done and happy. Other chips may do TC in an acceptable manner. None do it like a DNA with the TCR curve in place.
I have tried many, many mods recently. I'm happy with their performance by and large. But, right now I'm happily vaping one of my VT133s. Why? Because though the others do a fine job, none do a stellar job.

i rarely vape over 50 watts in TC so im not sure i need a 133 watt box. are you saying the DNA167 is more efficient battery wise vs the DNA75? isnt that something a firmware update would fix on the 75? i can handle not having the ability to change all settings from the device alone and color.

sorry for all the DNA newb questions. just want to make an informed decision.

Yep, the 200/250 chip has higher efficiency. No, it isn't something that is going to be fixed by a firmware update. It would have been fixed if that were the case as the 75 (not C) has been out for a good long time.
The 75s are solid, nice mods, vape great, same TC as the 200/250. My only caveat is the battery life.
    I vape SS430 at 40-55W 430-450F.
Here's the mods I have been vaping the past couple of months. You can see which is in use right now. None are single battery.

Nice mods! I even use dual battery mods for MTL. People say it's over kill but mods like the pico just do not fit in my hand.
I prefer the overall feel of dual batteries as well as the battery life.
I currently am vaping a berserker sat on top of a minikin at 20 watts & don't really give a shit what people think.
If a single battery works for them all power to them!!

i see you have a modefined sirius... does yours have a wonky fire button? someone in a review thread here is claiming that this device doesnt only have an issue with the fire button sticking... but that its the majority of the devices and not just a one or two off. i was considering one of these before deciding to go DNA. the reviewer posted some teat data that showed it performs very well in regard to TC. do you find that is also the case?

yes! ive actually been eyeing this as well for a DNA starter. i found them at another vendor as well. the size of the device is ideal also.

when was the Lava Box released originally? anyone remember?

EDIT: yeah i think im about to order one of these. just makes sense to get this now and then consider a more expensive mod when the new stuff comes out. i dont vape as much as most. thats why my cells last so long throught the day. ive never had any issues with my Evic devices. not sure where they stand on battery efficiency.

oh a question about the lava box... i see it has a magnet battery door... how is the fit on this door? are the magnets strong?

well... i pulled the trigger. lol.

found the Lava Box 75 at VapeNW for $51.90 shipped! hell thats what the chip itself costs so worst case, if i hate the mod, ill still have the chip.

looking forward to giving DNA a shot on a budget. also in the small form factor im after. ill wait for the new stuff to come out before deciding on an expensive DNA device.

    thanks everyone!!!

Yep, and its on its way back for a refund. Love the mod, TCR is excellent, auto wattage mode is stellar, build is nice, feels good in my hand. Then, they go and screw up the fire button. A shame. But back it goes.

You will love it. The battery door is very solid, at least on my blood red Lavabox. Congratulations!
