    Hey all,

I'm a journalist, based in the UK, currently working on a piece looking at the subculture of vaping. Would anyone be up for answering a few questions either by email or even on here?

Will be a positive piece (I vape myself, as it happens) and I won't be asking anything too intimate. Interested in things like how you got started, the cultural associations, whether you mod/mix your own flavors, what your attitudes are towards regulations, whether you think people are well educated, what the community is like, and how you think vaping is perceived. Will be more specific if and when someone is up for talking to me.

You can certainly be anonymous if you prefer. The publication is around behavioral insights, and can answer questions you have for me.

    Cheers,
    Manny

The answer to every one of your questions is already right here in this forum.
Hang out, get to know people, be interactive, and read all you want.
Most people don't like the idea of someone coming in and wanting to interview them.
Especially a new member that signed up for the sole purpose of the interviews.
If you become part of the family, you'll get all the answers you're after.

Yup, well said. I originally wrote out a post on how I'd be willing to answer what I could, but became very uncomfortable with the idea of being a voice for vaping. Not because I don't know how I feel, but because this (vaping) is far more important to me than a hobby or lifestyle. It's a method that I hope will help me to extend my life for those I love. I don't feel that I, personally, have the voice to speak on such an important matter as I'm just starting out. I do very much hope that you are successful with your article. I've written freelance for years, but have never had to poll anyone or ask for comment. Everything I do is via research and reading, then I form an idea that seems fair. Best of luck, really. :)

Smoked 80+ cigarettes one drunken night, woke up at 5am it was hot out and extremely humid and I couldn't breathe, literally my throat was clogged with tar, after several attempts to breathe I finally coughed up some tar and could breathe again... after that I tried everything to quit and after trying everything I gave vaping a shot... over 2 years smoke free now...

I mix one flavor and buy two others, the one that I mix is far to expensive for me to afford in the quantities that I vape it so I mix a recipe similar to the one I enjoy at 1/10th the cost..

Most vapers want regulations, I do to, I want regulations that ensures there's no contaminants in my juice/batch testing, everything else is a complete waste and seems to lean towards prohibition when instead these products need to be promoted to smokers..

It really varies, there's tonnes of misinformation from both sides of the fence, a lot of vapers have read a great many studies but part of the problem lies in the interpretation of the data, anyone can read a study but one must understand the science to really grasp it.

It's different everywhere you go, anyone that understands the science behind it and see's harm reduction as something good will be behind it however there is a lot and I mean A LOT of misinformation out there in media campaigns especially in the US that has completely defaced vaping and scares of people who would have otherwise switched from smoking to vaping on a daily basis. The abstinence only crowd has crippled the industry excessively...

I don't know that that's fair. For instance, I surround myself with other people in recovery. A lot of these people are focused on improving their lives and health. It's a running joke that people in my position are highly addicted to coffee and cigarettes and it certainly has its truth. I've noticed over the past few years that people are really making a go at quitting smoking and vaping has become commonplace. That's just an example of a sect that may not be commonly observed and wouldn't likely to be thought of by someone who wasn't looking for it. I'm certain there are numerous examples of similar things. It's been some time since I stepped foot on a college campus, but I'd bet vaping is common in that demographic as well.

The only couple of things I'd like to see change are the use of sex as a selling point in advertisement and the "bro" crap. I don't mind the use of the term, but no, I don't lift, but I do vape and hate that people assume anything about me based on my decision to vape. I get enough shit based on the way I dress, tattoos and my personal history with drugs and alcohol.

Thank you to those who have chimed in, really appreciate it. To those who would prefer not to engage in this way, that's cool. That in itself is interesting to me, actually.

    A couple of quick replies:
For things like this, I think speaking to people by whatever medium (though nothing better than over a beer/cup of tea, really) gets the most interesting insights, though reading and research definitely play a very important part!

In this case, it's not a personal story - it's all about getting the views of different people. And I'm not really involved in any sort of community, so can't really comment on the culture of it.

Thanks again for all your replies.

I'm not involved in any vaping culture. My only interactions with other vapors for the most part is on this forum and maybe a biweekly trip to the vape shop. I vape for one reason and one reason only. I don't want to die a miserable death caused by cancer as a result of smoking. As far as the equipment and juice I use it boils down to this....I'm learning and using what makes the experience the most pleasant and satisfying for me. I don't want a hobby. I have my Harleys for that. I just want to live a little longer.

Ramble is correct! I tend to do that. You are welcome to ignore my posts altogether if you prefer.

What I was trying to convey is that sampling your own view and opinion isn't necessarily helpful in writing an article. I threw in some examples of how one might not have the perspective to write an article having ones only source of information being, well, themselves.

Oh, I agree. Certainly this is a case where sampling opinions is valid. Me not having done so is irrelevant. Sorry for that. :)

yeah... really if the vaping community had been regulated from it's birth, today an e-cig would be a marlborough with and eletric lighter...made in China...even today the more regulation they impose the worse the average vaper is off...as regulations have spread we have watched hundreds of high quality responsible modder and innovators here in the US and Europe, the Philipines, driven out of bussiness and the entire industry being handed over to the chinese whose less than stellar regard for the lives of their consumers always makes me wonder when the next shoe will be dropping....

Thanks for seperating the wheat from the chaff for me, but I think Paratech nailed it for those of us who've been asked this same question many times by people from outside the community and knew nothing about it. you see it smells of ANTZ, but then i'm not the trusting type.

Just my opinion...regulating is one thing. Ok with me when it comes to insuring QC of build materials.

Would also like to know ingredients in juice. Not some vague crap about 4 ingredients VG, PG nicotine, and flavoring. To much can blanket under flavor, like maybe moose cum or rat shit.

I have no problem with the cleanliness and sanitation of Ejuice facilities producing for sales and public consumption being regulated just like food production is.

Over regulating is where I draw the line. Unfortunately that is generally the area burocrats tend to take things.

As far as personal builds and juice making.... Do whatever floats your boat. If you blow your lips off because you build a fucked up mod, or dye from some screwed up juice you concoct that is on you.

well I can't say that I have ever ever heard of an e-juice company being busted for putting moose cum or rat shit in their juice.....or anything remotely similar....what I can say is that every single year FDA approved foods are sent out to the public only to be recalled later after people have been sickened by them.....vaping has always used the community itself to police itself, and it has been remarkably succsesful...ask 5 pawns......and I'll say this for vaping.....it started out as an obscure joke, it's users ridiculed as eccentrics and loons, it was not funded by a bank, a corporation or a goverment agency. it was created in the workshops and garages of thousands of individuals and it grew from that into a multi-billion dollar industry.....I'm not clear what the goverment has to offer us, that we can't do better, and cheaper ourselves.

Sampling any view and opinion isn't necessarily helpful in writing an article.

For instance those that are good with regulation can fuck off. Who the fuck are they to say what vapers want?

Nobody knows who the OP is. There have been several "well meaning" folks come to VU(and that other fucked forum) pretending to be helpful that,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,weren't and no intention to be.

In short, I don't really want random fucks on the internet speaking for me and those that don't fucking post at VU(most of the population).

    Then make your own.

With all the food regulations, people still find rat shit, mice and other nasties in their food from time to time. :p

First off I said some regulation, but burocrats generally take it to the extreme.

Like I also said do what you want unregulated for your own use either for building or making juice. I don't really care. If someone fucks up doing that no skin off my back. A simple thinning of the herd.

BTW I figure since I shoot it, process it, package it and freeze it....I know what's in the sausage.

I worked in a meat cutting plant as a young man. There is nobody looking over your shoulder 24/7. I may have cut my finger and bled on the burger. Who knows? Nobody but me, that's who.

I suppose somebody might have noticed if I was Jacking off a moose though, I'm not even sure about that.

The moose cum thing I through in there with the rat shit just for bullshit examples of the fact that there isn't anything on the labels stating the ingredients. Just basically the flavor. Kind of like the old saying concerning your former profession about what's in the sausage or bologna....basically whatever got scooped up with the shovel off the floor. One of the reasons I don't eat very many processed foods. When I can't pronounce the names of the ingredients in something that is suppose to be preserving it or the fillers or dies then in my mind it's not food just another form of pink slime.

I did a brief stint in a chicken processing plant 11 years ago. Saw birds and parts of birds thrown around, hit the floor and other places picked up, rinsed off, packaged and shipped out. All this with a USDA staff on location 24/7 rubber stamping everything.

I think most people here realize that the government only gets involved in anything to find away to place an operational cost, permit fee, fine, or tax on something to line it's coffers. The stuff that is trending and making money is what they go after. It also creates more government jobs to keep the bureaucratic wheels in charge and rolling. A real thorn in their sides right now has to be the fact that the majority of vaping sales even though there are all of the vape shops is conducted on line. In their eyes they see that as lost revenue. To be honest I buy as much of the stuff we use online as possible to avoid paying sales tax on it. I pay enough damn taxes without everything I buy getting taxed to. Food wise we garden because of the price of produce. I hunt and fish to supplement meat at meals. This next year our meat will also be supplemented by raising rabbits, chickens, and goats.

I honestly think that government regulation in the vape industry is inevitable just like it is in damn near everything else. The best that we are going to be able to hope for is as minimal an effect as possible. The one thing that you can bank on is big tobacco is pushing for it. Governments will likely fall in line due to loss taxes from tobacco sales as people continue to quit using those products and opt for vaping. I would like to see the vape industry be a little more proactive and beat the government to the punch as far as including the ingredients on the label. I would also like to see the vape industry push back and demand the same from big tobacco making them list all of the additives they add as well as a warning of what those additives combined become once they are combusted.

Those sound like some of the ridiculous names I have seen on actual juice, lol

But really, a lot of the same flavorings in juice are the same thing when you see "natural flavoring" listed in food ingredients...

I understand that. I just think that on the vaping side of things if the flavor is strawberry juice then list it. What's it going to turn into with PG? Cake frosting.lol

Seriously any one flavor can't have more than a few base flavorings making up the labeled flavor. It's kind of like the post about the bullshit names of ejuices. Call the juice what every you want and then include on the label the ingredients. I also understand that ejuice is a big market right now and listing the ingredients would give the competition the bulk of a recipe minus the exact measurements each.

At the end of the day DIYers are going to keep making their own juice, building and rewicking their own coils, and building their own mods. That is their prerogative. Believe me I understand this I ordered some TMaxx juice because it is $6 for 30 ml or basically $12 for 120 ml. I read the reviews and understand that when it gets here it is going to have to steep for at least 2 weeks. I also know I can get the RBA kits for my 3 Big Babys for $11 each. A little math on my part and I'm looking at this new habit costing less than $30 a month as apposed to the $200 or so I spent this month or the $200 plus a month I was spending on cigarettes.

Started doing all that out of fear of pending regulations, well before they were actually published - plus I'm a cheapskate, lol

But with the regulations hanging over our heads, been hoarding gear and nicotine, which is not cheap to do at all

The FDA does allow a certain number of rodent hairs, insect larvae, and other icky things in our food.
In Ga. we had one generous soul who poisoned the peanut butter in his own factory. As in, he owned the factory. Killed a couple of folks.
People are just fucking nuts, and you never know wtf you're getting from anywhere. Even if you DIY, you still have no idea what's lurking in the components. Life's a crap shoot.

It's interesting you talk about chicken processing plants....Tyson Chicken was and may still be the largest poultry processing firm in America...Tyson also was I believe the single biggest campaign donor to Bill Clinton during his reign in Arkansas, and Tyson remained generous donors up to the Clinton runs for the whitehouse ...Tysons generosity toward Clinton allowed then not only to skirt around a close inspection by the FDA Tyson was also able to illegally bus hundreds of illegal aliens up from mexico to work in their plants and displace American workers, all of which Clinton knew about,..eventually Tyson got caught up in a recall of some of their chicken that was making people sick and people started taking a closer look at what was going on there and the lid got blown off......That my friend is your tax dollars at work......that is your so called goverment regulations protecting the public....something like 1% of forgien foodstuffs actually get physically inspected by the FDA,

long ago vapers had your same concerns, and vapers not goverment officals started demanding that flavoring companies give a list of the ingridents in their flavorings...so much so, that flavoring companies were so willing for the vaping dollar that they happily gave out the information...indeed Flavor Art probablly the single most heavily used flavoring company by DIY vapers... was so encouraged to gain the vaping communities bussiness they came out with their own line of flavoring tailored just for vaper's uses, they started to try and tailor all their flavorings to be compatible with vaping..When 5 Pawns which at the time was the most popular High end juice around, was caught falsifying the % of certain chemicals in it's juice they were busted not by the goverment but by vapers...and their sales went into the toilet...even today 5 Pawns has never regained the trust of the vaping community to the degree they once held......the vaping community is under assult and has been for some time now, but not because of health concerns but because it is revolutionary...it has demonstrated to the world the succsess and creativity of free people...who left to their own freedom and devices, to not only create a massively profitable industry, but to also develop the single most succsessfull nicotine replacement therapy yet discovered and deliever the most promising solution to save a billion lives....and yet that is precisely why the goverment needs to destroy vaping, vaping has dealt a death blow to Big Tobacco, Big Pharma whose therapies were expensive and ineffectual, and to the phony public health NGO's....but more importantly vaping has dealt a huge blow to Big Goverment...vaping has been in my lifetime probablly the single biggest example of the failure, and indeed the fallacy of the idea that there is a people's NEED for goverment.

Another good example of the the industry self policing is the recent campaigns to get shitty companies like candy king to change the shitty labels on their shitty juice.

Also, remember what happened to Dr Crimmy? There is another company that never full recovered once their fuckery was uncovered.

This post is pointless, so move on unless you're bored. You've been warned.

Since this has gone waaaay ot...

I don't know what kind of fucked up places you guys have worked at or read about. I worked for a company, they are a huge food company, probably best known for cheese and their mac & cheese. It rhymes with, uh, well, nothing I can think of, but starts with a K. Shit, it's Kraft (duh), I worked for Kraft for 16 years. I never ever saw anything I wouldn't feed my kids or yours. Pointless, but whatever. There are good food production companies.

    So there's that. :D

I'm in favor of regulations just common sense regulations that are not based on fear mongering. Vaping is saving my life. I smoked for 30+ years & tried quitting many times. I tried everything from Gum to Snus and nothing worked. Nothing seemed to satisfy the need to inhale plumes of warm air. Then along came vaping. I was an early adopter but for some reason or another I always came back to smoking. Once sub ohm vaping took off it only took me a week to completely quit.

I have no problem restricting advertising or trying to keep kids from vaping. I truely believe vaping is harmless, but I don't encourage non smokers start. So why open the door to allow vaping company's to market to non-smokes. I believe without some common sense restrictions, or the fear of restrictions that companies would do just that in an effort to increase the bottom line or to increase shareholder wealth. I do think it's complete bull shit that vaping gets so much negative press and that some people and some organizations use our children safety to justify a ban on vaping. I believe that if our kids health is paramount than we should be talking about sugar consumption. I travel all over the world for work and I think the US is the only developed country that allows beverage companies to sell 12 packs for 2.50 if you buy 5. Im not saying to regulate the soda industry. What I am saying is there should be some truth in advertising and the media should stop promoting sensationalism and do their job.

Imho, mostly the threat is a money grab, under the guise of save the kids. Handing vaping over to big tobacco is bigger threat than the Chinese. BT knows how to play the regulatory game, waited for the right time to strike, sell in places that the mainstream is familiar with, and have heat not burn ready to come to the rescue.

Do you think the FDA is more likely to approve a unicorn jizz e liquid, a cloud beast king tank, or something people their age can understand, like a marlboro heat stick? Our disruptive technology reached sufficient volume that the grabbers got greedy. Worldwide, not just in the US. Health concerns very minor.

As for the media. If the election coverage fiasco didn't straighten them out, the only thing that will is turning a deaf ear. Not sure the public has the time or interest, so the 60 sec sound bytes work in some very one-sided ways.

Anyone who thinks the govt knows best for their health should review the FDA approvals, or lack of, for cancer and other complex conditions.

Always be sure to remove the stone from the plum before you try to inhale it. :giggle:

Totally agree! I am not suffering the Institutionalization Syndrome, so I do not require a nanny to tell my my vape is safe -- I mix my own ejuice, and build my own coils, and if there was anything wrong with either, I have these things called tastebuds that would inform me.

The Royal College of Physicians have already determined that vaping is AT LEAST 95% safer than smoking; no fucking regulations wanted or needed.
