Hi guys. So I'll give you some back story here before I get down to what's bothering me. In 2014 I tried vaping on cheap units. Never really cared for it, no throat hit, just kinda sucked. A buddy of mine pushed me to get an original itaste svd and aspire nautilus tank. With in a month I really enjoyed it and made the switch. Two months later I was having some weird reaction with burning skin and turning red. Stopped vaping. Went back to smoking.

I have been researching lately and concluded after talking to my dr that my nicotine levels were too high causing my reaction. Or so I believe. At this point I'm 5 days now only vaping with a 50/50 3mg out of a new svd 2.0 and nautilus 2.0. I've been running a 1.6 ohm 7.9w 3.7v set up for a couple days now. No reactions and no issues. I actually feel pretty good.

Now for what's bothering me. I have family and friends all over me this time telling me how "I'm better off smoking than vaping." That I'm killing myself with 5x the formaldehyde of a cigarette and all kinds of bad ingredients in my vape. Out of straight paranoia I have dropped my voltage to a 3.7, was a 3.3 but I can't get any semblance of a throat hit out of the set up then. I don't think I'm burning anything with these levels. I just don't know what to make of this. I'm a 13 year smoker pretty desperate to never smoke again. I want to enjoy this vape and half my nicotine levels til there gone. Still all this is wearing on me and I can't really find a whole lot to ease my mind on the matter.

E liquids contain a few chemicals, Vegetable glycerol, propylene gycol, Nicotine usually PG based) and PG based flavourings/sweetners. no traces of formaldehyde. or the other gazillion chemicals in cigarettes. Im sure yor family and friends are great people and only care for you, but in this instance they may just be uneducated on the facts and studies of Vaping and E-cigarettes etc Ive had many rants and debates with my family about the benefits and the studies of vaping and how different it is to smoking, it can take an age to prove the triuth that they ARE 70%+ healthier than smoking. the chemicals in your regular eliquid, are all consumed DAILY through standard food and drink by almost every person. its just a different form to the norm. There havent been enough studies yet to see the real long term effects of vaping compared to smoking but already the benefits and differences are astronomical. Find some studies, facts, papers, anything you can to show them just what its all about and whats happening, Dont let it bother you, if it was that bad for you the government wouldnt be trying to ban it left right and centre to make way for their biggest income. Tobacco.

Congratulations on giving up cigarettes with a safer alternative!

As well intentioned as these people are - they are dead wrong and likely believe the propaganda against vaping that is raging, mainly backed by organizations and governments that stand to lose millions, possibly billions, of dollars as smokers drop cigarettes for the much safer vaping alternative

Your doctor would certainly have said don't vape instead of helping you figure out why you have a bad reaction

The Royal College of Physicians believes vaping is 95% safer than cigarettes - and in England, their public health system backs vaping because it saves them money when smokers become vapers. Less disease because vaping is much safer

There is a documentary called "A Billion Lives" you should see, it is available on Amazon

This should do it. No one can say that there is no risk, but if someone told me to load a gun and then to pick from the gun I loaded and another that I don't know if it is loaded, point it at my head, and pull the trigger... well, I'm definitely not picking the one that I KNOW is loaded!

Maybe in 10-15 years we'll find out vaping is gonna kill us.

I know right now that smoking is going to kill us.

I know that when I'm vaping, I feel better. I can do more stuff with my kids. My clothes and hair don't stink. Heck, it also requires you to up your water intake, and most of us need that anyway lol

Nothing is actually CERTAIN here. We don't know true long term effects. But just comparing to the known risks of smoking, I think the chances of vaping being the worse option are pretty minuscule, ya know?

Funny thing is they'll all say how bad it is for you but by the end of the night, they're asking to take a hit off it.

That formaldehyde thing is from a Polish study to see the effects of voltage on vaping and at the highest setting they got a lot of bad stuff but they were burning the silica wick. If someone other than a machine was doing the vaping they would have realized there error. So it's another case of anti people taking things out of context. Here's something you can print out to show the haters.

I will bet that smoking a cigarette filter gives off loads of bad stuff.
Pretty much the same thing as their tests are showing.
Burned hits vs smoking a filter.
    Who would do it intentionally?

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the input and links. My searches for answers on this topic hasn't netted me much more than webstores, the same rehashed vaping will kill you worse than tobacco links and such.

I'm having a little bit of a hard time with the adaptation back to vaping still. A cigarette sometimes sounds real good and my irritability is up a good bit. Throw on top of that the frustration of everyone telling me I'm better off smoking. The only one behind me on this is my wife. I'm having to get up and go away when people smoke around me or when they start ganging up to tell me im better off smoking. I will say I'm pretty sure there is something else addictive in a cigarette over nicotine. All my experience with vaping has never been an easy change, that there is definitely something else I'm craving. I guess it goes to show we don't even really know what all is what in cigarettes let alone vaping.

Either way this peach vape is feeling pretty good right about now. :)

I've never heard that but when they enacted the FSC fire standard compliant laws for commercial cigarettes here I started rolling my own. Matter of fact I have been rolling my own since 2010. i always thought that was a less additive option but I could have been way wrong.

Smoked 1.5 PAD of Reds for 40 years. 18 mg in a cigalike got me off of cigs in 1 week.
Was down to 6 mg in 2 weeks.

Funny thing is I did not even want to quit.
Wife sneaked and bought me an overpriced cigalike kit so I figured I would try it for her.

Was doing DIY in under 6 weeks.

Yeah no offense to your friends and family but the don't know what they're talking about..We've all experienced this though..There's alot of ignorance surrounding vaping as a whole. I've gotten those comments as well..I just smile knowing I'm bettering myself. Like someone pointed out there's three chemicals and some flavoring compared to the 1000's of chemiclas found in cigarettes. BS media doesn't help the cause.. #vapeon

If you are having trouble with serious cravings, you may want to try WTA

It is what finally allowed me to smoke my last cigarette - over a year and a half ago

The formaldehyde myth has been easily debunked. http://www.vapingpost.com/2016/11/0...-produced-by-an-ecig-a-cigarette-and-a-cigar/ (This article continues to an interesting followup article via a clickable link near the bottom of the page.)
A couple years ago there was a very similar myth about acrolein... also debunked. Also another one about diacetyl (used as an additive in some e-liquids) causing popcorn lung syndrome, but all e-liquid manufacturers quit using diacetyl years ago. The list goes on.

Tell them there are 599 chemicals present in cigarettes. Tell them part of those chemicals are added for the sole purpose of making cigarette smoking even more addicting. https://www.drugabuse.gov/publicati...chemicals-may-contribute-to-tobacco-addiction
Here's another article that dates back all the fucking way to 2003: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/393075.stm

I started vaping after two separate cardiologists suggested I should give it a shot as everything else I tried failed. But I still did tons of research. Most of the negatives that I found where based of off someone's speculation or a survey or an intentional miss representation of someone else's work. All the ingredients used in e-liquid are considered safe to eat, some are already considered safe to inhale like PG. flavor art has even sponsored a good bit of research on the effects of inhaling their flavors. But the jist of it is this, there is a question mark as to if long term exposure may contribute to adverse health effects, however it's well established now the the immediate effects are benign. The exception to that is a sensitivity or allergy to an ingredient. If you are allergic to a food there is a chance you will be allergic to the flavoring. Some people are allergic to pg itself. Myself personally I recently figured out for sure most peach flavors give me a rash if I vape enough of it. I know random people on the internet won't really ease a troubled mind. But I hope you find enough resources to come to this conclusion for yourself. Speaking strictly for myself I am quite sure it's significantly better than smoking, and while I have made a number of lifestyle changes in conjunction with switching to vaping I do believe it's contributed to an increase in my general health. Best of luck to you.

You need to tell all the naysayers that they don't know what they're talking about, so kindly STFU. Good that your wife is supportive -- my husband has been my best cheerleader, and now HE goes around telling naysayers to STFU unless they have something useful to say. :giggle:

What Juicy said about WTA is correct; if you have serious physical cravings despite having no desire to smoke, WTA could be just the ticket. What someone said about antidepressants, that's not QUITE right, but close; tobacco contains MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) (naturally; they're not additives) which used to be used as antidepressants before big pharma figured out they could charge more for SSRIs, which are also much harder to withdraw from than MAOIs, so mo money for big pharma, who really don't give a shit about anyone's health, they just want to make another trillion. But those MAOIs are alkaloids, and so are included in the "whole tobacco alkaloid" cocktail of WTA.

I would not recommend WTA to anyone who is not already completely smoke-free, and ONLY for those who are having truly physical cravings, OR serious psychological symptoms such as depression, anxiety, or serious lack of focus, because WTA is almost as hard to withdraw from as actual smoking; the main benefit is that you can measure it into your ejuice precisely, and thus carry out a systematic wean-down over a period of time, mitigating the worst withdrawal symptoms, gradually accustoming your brain to doing without them. It took me 15 months to systematically wean from it, and though I haven't used it regularly since March 2016, I still sometimes add a drop or two to my atomizer if I'm having more depression issues than usual (I suffer a chronic continuum of clinical depression/anxiety; sometimes better, sometimes worse, and that was one factor that made quitting smoking a real bastard).

Congrats on making a smarter choice, and don't listen to the idiots quoting Mass Media; they simply don't have a clue.

I have read the appropriate studies from respectful doctors. After smoking for 40+ years and vaping for close to three years I can honestly tell you I feel 100% better vaping than I felt while smoking. Now I barely vape any longer, I don't need nicotine, nor any of the 1000's of chemicals in cigarettes. I've come to the point it being just a hand to mouth habit. I will stop vaping entirely in the near future, THANKS to vaping.

This is what I went thru when I started vaping! Family and friends who are smokers are telling me how bad vaping is! Read up on Tobacco cigarettes and the dangers - google it!
I believe that vaping is much safer than Tobacco cigarette smoking- I was able to quit my 30+ year love affair with cigarettes, by Vaping and Will Power! I make my own decisions by reading all I can!

Some vape only only unflavored juice as well. That keeps it at nicotine, pg, vg. Hospitals use pg pumped into their central air units to help create a sterile environment. They also use it in the brand name disinfectant Lysol here in America. VG is sugars from vegetables, vegetable glycerin, it can also come from nuts as in the case of coconut based vg. You can get vg from beets too. Nicotine can come from tomatoes, yard/garden grass, celery, cabbage, it does not necessarily need to come from tobacco only. Tobacco though, does produce the better quantities of nicotine per area.

You can also distill your own flavors or ether from various herbs. The one known by the common name of colt's foot can be used in juice to help administer tussin, which is found naturally in the herb and synthesized to make the cough syrup brand named Robitussin. I suggest though one be cautious in using herbs, know what they use and use the smallest doses for adding into the ejuice. Also be aware that herbs affect and effect each individual subjectively, there are quite a few good tomes on herbs out there and they'll give you a very good 'general' reference. Not trying to frighten any from using herbs nor trying to give medical advice, or saying go hog wild with no care or concern either. "Using herbs can be done, just do try to be careful." :)

Also since around 2002-2008 government here in America has made legal and lawful for mass media to tell blatant lies. This was done to allow the government to posit propaganda, advanced psychological subterfuge operations, means to avoid accountability. Thank the blank check given by Congress to have a War On Terror for that. I cannot recall an exact date this was done for a few different reasons. I too run a small gambit of garden level mental illnesses, have mental illness in family history, have experimented with some *ahem* out of bounds drugs and use some in bounds legal drugs. Also there's the whole political/military lying factor to contend, ergo the date is clouded within that six year time frame. Know it was Obama that extended such powers.

Yep. If someone can make a few bucks too, peddling fear porn they'll do it. You really need to discern good information, truthful information from bad, untruthful information. This indeed is a rough task despite living in the information age. Information is the narrative about data. Narrative can be used as a weapon. Think about olden to ancient times when the knowing of someone's name granted you power over them, like the tale of Rumpelstiltskin. That is using narrative as a weapon. Narrative leads to perception and perception creates reality/ies.

Excuse me, rambled on enough for now. Need to finish :coffee: and go do the living stuff. :)

I always just think of that Don Henley song:

"They got the bubble-headed bleach-blond, comes on at 5,
she can tell you 'bout the plane crash, with a gleam in her eye."

It doesn't require any particular intelligence to be a talking-head on TV anymore; "they just have to look good, they don't have to be clear." Or Right. Or honest. All they have to be able to do is look good on camera and read the teleprompter. Or just look good on camera. ;)

Wow I appreciate the support and the responses. Sadly I'm still struggling with coming off cigarettes and it's been over two weeks with 100% vaping. I broke down and threw some chew in last night. Between work exploding after a two year downturn and life in general I was at my limit. I ordered some wta but really want to not use it. I really want to be done with tobacco. Truthfully I like vaping but I'm looking for the day where I'm done with it too. I just want to be free of addiction and be a little more sure I'm gonna be here for my wife and someday soon our kids.

Really thank you all for the patient and well reasoned responses. This seems like a pretty easy going crowd.

Just like anything you try to do, don't let a set back be an excuse for failure. So you used some tobacco, doesn't mean you have to keep using it. Back on the horse and no looking back. It's the only way to succeed.

You hang in there - use the WTA when you need it and don't beat yourself up by taking it all on at once. In other words, slay one dragon at a time :cloud:

Been thinking back a lot the past few days on how hard it was to actually stop smoking, even with vaping.

Just watched my husband have a minor stroke Friday caused by smoking - it was small compared to one he has not recovered from that struck him last September. And he has a great vaping coach and everything I would have done anything to have when I was trying to quit my 37-year habit.

So you are doing great - just hang in there because IT DOES GET BETTER if you stick with it :)

I haven't felt the need to use WTA and in fact some months ago I didn't even know it existed. I have officially been smoke free for six months thanks to vaping, but I am certain I couldn't have done it without 1/ chain vaping a lot, and 2/ vaping on an RDA with custom built coils at relatively high wattage for both big enough clouds (i.e. dense, saturated vapor) and flavor, and 3/ adjusting the nic level of my juice to about 4.5mg/ml by mixing different nic levels of the same (or similar) flavor. The only real struggle I had was due entirely to the steep learning curve involved with vaping on an RDA. But looking back on those six months now, even though it's been one hell of a ride and an adventure, vaping is still the best decision I ever made. I'm down to 3mg/ml, and have been that for almost four months. At 3mg, I no longer get big cravings if I'm unable to vape, get cravings much less frequently if I'm unable to vape, and am able to go hours on end without vaping if necessary. I never felt any cravings whatsoever whilst being able to constantly vape. If WTA eases your struggle, then use it. There's tons more harm done by trying to force kick the habit than by using the custom tailored white glove approach that makes it achievable for you to continue your journey. Vape on!

I was a dual user for weeks and couldn't put down those last couple cigarettes a day. I tried to not beat myself up over that, I was coming from smoking about 1.5 packs a day. At some point I was just frustrated that I couldn't stop those few. What worked for me was to make it inconvenient to pick up my pack - like leaving them in my car when I was at work, or at home, something along those lines, but I see you're already a few weeks into not smoking. I think we're harder on ourselves, when we've really made a lot of progress. A lot of people here were dual users for quite some time, but they were certainly smoking less! It's "progress, not perfection"

I agree with what Lucy said, one dragon at a time. Fewer expectations of yourself, you're getting there.

@JuicyLucy, I'm really sorry to see this about your husband. Keeping you guys in my thoughts.

It took me about a month-ish to transition to vaping. What pleased me most about vaping as a means of quitting smoking was that I DIDN'T have to do it all at once, I could do it in my own sweet time -- which for me was a month, but if it had been a year, that would have been ok too.

WTA is NOT TOBACCO -- and using it is FAR better and safer than ANY tobacco use, but especially smoking tobacco. It's just that it's a bit more challenging to wean down from WTA, than from nicotine. But don't sabotage yourself with this "I want to be done with tobacco RIGHT NOW" thinking; using WTA can keep you from needing, wanting, or using tobacco. Presumably you created your smoking addiction over many years, maybe decades -- do you really think it's going to be a quick and easy recovery from it? No matter how much you want it? The best way to defeat that addictive brat in your brain is to take it slowly, kinda fool that addicted idiot into thinking that nothing much has changed, so it will shut up and leave you alone, instead of convincing you that you need to do something toxic just to survive -- you really don't, but your brain will do its damndest to try to get what it wants, and nevermind what YOU want. Give it the finger and use the WTA instead of tobacco. Your brain won't know the difference.

Just want to add, & this is just my experience & I don't want to say it will be everyone's, but I was not successful until I truly done into vaping. For 4 yrs I did both smoking & vaping. Then I figured it isn't working so I went straight back to just smoking. Finally, I went out & bought a good rig, studied up as much as I could on DIY juice & wicking my own rebuildables, & went whole hog. The hobby portion of all this, for whatever reason I don't know, has helped me get away from cigs completely. It might be just how my mind works that creates this effect, but I'm willing to bet in not the only one. Find what works for you & run with it! The more enjoyment you can find, the more likely you are to succeed. And remember, a setback is not failure!

Building coils for me becomes a meditation and means to listen to my Pap. He died a few years ago. Read some Terry Pratchett which taught me how well I knew my Pap, despite feeling so distant from him, not knowing him.

No, you're not the only one. Sorry if I seem terse.

Sorry to hear about your pap! I understand more than you know. And no, you aren't coming off as terse. Building coils is my next adventure, just not quite ready just yet.

It isn't as frightening as I had thought. The main point is to be aware of Resistance in regards to your battery set up. You want to always aim to have yourself a minimum of 20% "head space" (What remains after discharging the battery) on a battery/ies. This ensures you're not recharging on a deep cycled battery cell which can be dangerous, hard on batteries too.

Most 20 Amp continuous discharge can drop to around .2 ohms fairly safely. That is what I'd suggest for single 18650 anyway, now if you you do dual batteries you can go lower but watch out you try staying up over .05 or more. In general it's like crossing a street, be cautious and understand a bit about you're doing, don't fear asking for help. Usually, we don't do continuous discharges. :) We pulse.

Sorry to hear of your loss/es as well. There's a bit of humor my Pap used to tell. Way back when there was a mean old doctor by the last name of Graves. Well, "Doc Graves" only had one friend in town, an ornery old mountain man what only came to town twice a year. That mountain man died. Someone saw Doc on the street and asked if he was going to attend the man's funeral.

"What for? Son of a bitch damn sure won't show up for mine," Doc told them and went on his way. Out of the humor our family kind of realized Pap teaching us a lesson. Life naturally involves death and passing. Much as we struggle and live, love, we all die and that's fairly sure. Pap's lesson was that we didn't need to be afraid of it, didn't need to dwell on it and we need to be grateful for what we do get.

There's some what seem keen to think Life is a fluke. Got my doubts on that. Not sure death would know itself if there was no life. If only for that, the cosmos had to make life. We all get to define it ourselves though and that's what makes it so much an adventure. :)

That's part of why I use mech mods. :giggle: If I'm going to get killed, I'll get killed living like I want to live. :) If that means some say I kiss dynamite, or suck a pipe bomb, so be it. ;) At least I'm not choking on suicide nails any more.

Got some lovely Jasmine with my 'base' this morning. The Jasmine is so light but it keeps on hammering and I get the Jasmine "all your base are belong to us". :) Bah, need to get out and let my dogs out into their pen today. They've been being real good on staying "in their yard", finally. :) You run 'er slow. :)

Sounds like your pap was humorously insightful, a lot like my grandad. The strong characters in our lives are what help to mold us into who we are & that is how they live on. Vape on!

I figure no matter what I do I'ma die anyways. I might as well die doing something I enjoy. Something that tastes good, smells good, and actually makes me FEEL better then when I was smoking.

Hell, some old lady in a Cadillac could pull out in front of me on my motorcycle tomorrow. At least I went out doing something I love.

In the end. You gotta live for you. Sure we might be better off in the long run choosing to allow (insert name in blank) to make decisions for us. But I guarantee my own happiness knowing that I chose my own path.

"Live hard, ride free, my tattooed friend.
Enjoy life's road till journey's end.
Let speed, not haste, that be a must,
Fear none but those you can not trust.
Lest as a friend, they will deceive,
    only oneself, should one believe!"

Heard part of this once before, not by who you cite here, although I was well probably far too drunk to recall too much beyond the gist of what was being said. * chuckles * That was way back when moshing used to be a spiritual thing, life saving too for all the Ta Kill Ya you drank before hitting the pit. * chuckles * Whew, I date meself but too good.
