I've been using mostly two battery regulated mods and running them at 60 to 100W depending on my build. I now have a couple of three battery mods that can operate on two batteries. All of my batteries are LG HG2. I won't be increasing my Watts in the 3 battery mod. Can I just pop in a third HG2 and enjoy 50% more time between charges.

    Short answer yes

There are better performing 3000 mah 20amp batteries on the market such as the samsung 30q and the sont vtc6 but the hg2 is an excellent battery as well

I would recommend getting a fresh set of the same type of battery for your mod. Mixing older/used batteries with new batteries is not technically dangerous but it can reduce overall performance

Thanks! So I should keep a set of three for when I use it with 3 and a set of 2 for when I use it with 2 so all of the batteries in each set will have the same wear and tear?

That's a great question that I can not give an answer to. I was referring to the idea of taking 2 batteries you had married and used all the time and then suddenly putting them in a 3 battery mod with 1 additional brand new battery.

Hopefully someone with a deeper understanding of the subject will chime in soon and answer that particular question.

I will say this If you have 2 new sets of 3 batteries for the mod I would bet the best thing to do is rotate which batteries you use in 2 batt mode to keep the wear and tear on each battery as equal as possible. SO say you have batteries A B and C in set 1
the first time you go to 2 battery mode with set one you use A and B the second time A and C the third time B and C then repeat

...it's dangerous to use batteries; they were never designed to be used outside of a protected battery pack so it's dangerous to vape on them.

Depending on the mod you are getting will play into how well they balance the load on the 3 batteries. Some do a much better job than others from what I have seen.

I have several sets of the HG2's and they work fine in 3 battery mods. Wouldn't throw a new one in the mix with the old ones. But at the end of the day if they are all about the same age with about the same use you should be fine if it is a regulated mod. If this is a fully mechanical mod, you should probably grab a couple of new sets and marry them. If you are buying new batteries MattP gave good advice on batteries. I favor the Samsung presently over Sony's (just a personal thing).

I thought LGHG2 was Mooch's choice. For high drain battery.

It was. now the vtc6 and 30q perform better at 20amp for a 300mah battery

At 20 amps for a 3000 mAh battery, the Sony VTC6 perform better than BOTH the Samsung 30Q AND the LG HG2 according to Mooch, albeit the differences between these three choices are small. I have no idea why, but a lot of people seem to be having a really very difficult time trying to understand the difference between "was" and "is", and, as a matter of true fact, his favorite choice for high drain battery is, and has been for more than a year and a half, the Sony VTC5A (which I expect he will be replacing with the Sony VTC6A in a not too distant future because, IIRC, that is exactly what he has been saying as of late).

YES but this is not to say the hg2 is a bad battery now, just that sony and samsung came out with batteries with the same amps and mah and they outperform the hg2. I bought a dozen or so hg2s before the 30qs were available. I haven't stopped using them. In fact that's all I have except 4 25rs. But when I need to start replacing them I will more than likely get som VTC6s unless a new battery hits the market between now and then that outperforms them. I vape at or below 50 watts so 20amp is plenty for me and the extra mah is nice.

    Completely agree.
I'm not saying people should stop using them before they are worn. Just that, when people need to buy new batteries, then if having to decide between those three choices, the VTC6 performs best... end of (old) story. A lot of people have been coming up with the typical excuse that the difference in performance is too small to be able to justify the price difference and whatnot. But the reality is that batteries are dirt cheap so skimping on batteries just to save a few cents per day is kind of really stupid unless you really need those few cents because you're already forced to eat top ramen every day or something like that. The performance of your batteries also affects the performance of your mod, which in turn affects everything else as well. As a result, the price gap has to be put in THAT perspective, rather than keep looking at how many percent extra a certain choice of battery costs versus another choice. People usually spend more on cotton than they spend on batteries. Think about that for one small second.
Hopefully the VTC6A will hit the consumer market before then. It's not the end of the world when people buy the HG2 despite they could very easily have gotten the VTC6 instead, but knowledge is power so now that we already know that the VTC6 is the better performer, both versus the 30Q and versus the HG2, well... it is what it is, so...

I have just had better luck with Samsung batteries in general. They last longer for me (lifetime wise), and have been more consistent from batch to batch with fewer problems.

I only buy from reputable vendors and in my experience I seem to have more premature Sony battery deaths than any other brand.

His latest choices seem to be the VTC6 and VTC5A.

the purpose of marrying batteries is to keep the stress on the pair the same always so they wear down the same.

Noone could really answer the question. But sure you could do it. You could also simply just buy 2 new pairs of hg2 or vtc6 for about $25
But if both sets are used in the same mod and 1 in each pair is weaker then I would bet the mod is causing that and even putting new batteries in there they will eventually end up the same way
