Lips hurt from vaping

Hi Everyone, I'm new here. And after only 2 weeks, I'm having problems. My lips are so sore, and red, and swollen. There are no open sores, so I don't think they are canker sores. Only on my lips. I'm using a starter kit, E-Smart by Kangertech. The first two weeks were wonderful. I liked my 6 mg juice, but then found I wasn't satisfied. So I bought a 12mg juice, and mixed the two together. That was perfect. Then I switched to 12mg only when I finished the mix I'd made at home. That's when the trouble began. I don't want to go back to cigarettes. Started smoking when I was 12, and I'm 48 now. After work I bought more 6mg juice (same flavour, same brand from the start) and mixed again. I hope that helps, but's it's only been a few hours. Could I be allergic to the nicotine, or the PG?

PG or VG, or the flavorings. Try another flavor and get it at 9mg since you are mixing them. Get one in 30/70 (PG/VG) and another flavor in 70/30 (PG/VG). You will know either way. If you are allergic to any foods such as nuts, the flavorings could set off a histamine reaction because they are very close down at the molecule level with the real thing.

Drink more water and gargle with some listerine, or equiv mouthwash. Your body is eliminating a lot of toxins from quitting smoking, you will see some changes in flavor and sense of smell. Keep hydrated and flush the toxic crap from smoking out of your system.

Welcome to VU!

Ditto on the above. I doubt you're allergic to the nicotine, but PG could be an issue as could certain flavorings. Try switching to a different brand of juice also.

Thanks for the tips. I've upped the water intake, and have notices some changes; coughing, quit zits (oh joy! I feel like a teenager again!) I have listerine, so I'll try that. The sores are only on my lips, inside my mouth, and are bright red, but no rings. And only on sides of lips, not even in middle where the vape intake place sits when I inhale. I've also noticed that I can only smell scents from one nostril; other one might be broken.

The nose will come back, you will be hacking up a lot of crap from smoking for the next couple weeks. As far as zits go, Zit pads I guess. btw, Red wine will irritate those sores.

I mix for a friend with a dire PG allergy, can't go above 10% pg in any of his juices or he gets this same reaction with his tongue and throat swelling. He's on prescription medication just to tolerate the 10%. I think I'd try cutting back on the pg and maybe take some Benadryl to treat some of the symptoms you have. Also, where do you get your juice? If it's locally, I'd talk to whoever it is about pg content. Flavorings are generally 100% pg based unless they happen to be using vg based flavors, and I doubt they are. So you're not only getting the pg used to make the juice, you're also getting pg in the flavoring. That's taken into consideration when the mixer uses a juice calculator, but not knowing what method they use, you could be getting way too much.

Good morning everyone! Thanks for listening and writing back. Woke up this morning and realized the past couple of days I've been waking with a drier mouth. I think it's a bit of what you all said - quitting effects, and such. Also, I did buy more juice yesterday, a 6mg and mixed it with my 12mg. Had 3 vaping sessions (I vaped about 10 minutes at a time) before bed and this morning I feel fine. And, the redness is almost completely gone. My lips feel fine again. Except for the dry-ish mouth. My usual intake of 2 coffees a day and water all day long just isn't enough for the transition I suppose. More water, water everywhere.

I get my juice from a local supplier, but I don't know if they make it or buy it; it's a brand called theravape. It's a 60/40 mix, so maybe the PG is the issue, but it seems that the nicotine strength and lack of water might have been the real cause. I mixed my 12mg and a 6mg last night, drank extra water, and my lips are better today. Since I have a starter kit, the vendor told me the 70/30 mix might be too thick for the coils to handle. And I'm not ready to invest in an upgraded tank just yet.

Well, the red wine has to wait until Saturday night. I would drink it every day and night if I could, but alas, work, family, home, there just isn't enough time. ;)

Update - Red wine Saturday night, and vaping with my 'home mix' of 12mg and 6mg of the same, Theravape "Blue Paradise". Earlier this week I was suffering from redness, near blisters, but not, on my lips only. On the sides only, up and down, nothing right in the middle. No sores inside of mouth, nor throat. That happened immediately after switching from my mix to straight 12mg, at the advice of the vendor/specialist, when I told them the 6 mg wasn't enough, I was craving cigs.
That wasn't the only issue though. Using Esmart 510, small starter kit. Learned how to clean all the connections - use a tissue to wipe all, battery terminals, coil, all threads. Now I clean all, every time I top up my juice, or charge the battery. WAY better vaping experience. <3 that vendor told me, when I complained that I wasn't getting enough puff, was craving more after only 1 hour. When I smoked cigs, 8 to 10 a day for 35 years, I could go 2 hours without the craving. Vendor suggested to up the nicotine intake (from 6 to 12) instead of spending more $ for a different unit. Was nice to hear that.
Went back to mixing, my 12 and 6. It worked. Don't know how it worked, but it did. Lips healed almost overnight. Still using Esmart starter, love the lightness, the puffing is great, just need to clean all connections with a wipe of a tissue between charging of batteries or filling of slender tank.
Very happy. If you're ever in the 'Peg', visit Fat Panda on Notre Dame, and ask for Randy, with the diamond earring. (There are 2 Randy's there). ;)

Try getting a bottle of pure organic VG from a health food store. It is cheap. It's mildly sweet not pleasant nor horrible. Vape it straight. It's thick and may clog your clearomizer quickly Lack of nicotine will suck but it will at least help with the oral fixation. This may tell you if you are allergic to flavors or PG I have vaped for 6 years sub ohm Vaping for 3 and never had an issue until lately. New sweeteners or cheaper flavorings may be a culprit and fruits are worse. Maybe switching to subohm Vaping is the culprit with some spitback and allergy to flavors. I now have spent so much money on ointments and other treatments I may quit Sub ohm and am trying to go back to blu ecigs where I started 6 years ago. Not as satisfying but neither is looking like a poorly painted clown with a mouth disease. 6 years... Why now? Good luck to you. Stay off them ciggies. I have struggled as well for the first time in years. This suggests to me new juices. U may want to look into premium juices, ones that have been around for a while like Johnsons Creek Vanilla, Highbrow vapor. Ask around.

Hi Wendy.

I'd love to hear if this helps you at all.
I too have the same red 'clown' lips and am close to quitting e-cigs altogether.
It's been going on for nearly a year and the e-cigs are the only thing I'm left to try.
Yesterday I switched to 100% VG (including nic and flavour bases) so fingers crossed!

Keep in touch!

Hi and Welcome- I did not experience any of these problems when I quit a 30+ year love affair with cigarettes! Maybe both of you should go to the Dentist or Dr. and have this looked at! I have had very dry skin, but none of the mouth and lip irritation- I drink tons of water and use chap stick!
I usually vape 30pg/70vg at 3nic and so far so good- could be the toxins from quitting cigarettes that is having this effect? Sounds like some kind of allergy, could be pg or vg or flavors or nic?
Sorry you are having this problem- cigarettes are so very hard to quit at least it was for me- but stuck with vaping and stopped listening to the cigarettes calling my name in my head! I was sick of them running my life!
Best of Luck to you- and hope you find the cause of your problem!

Hi,

Definitely not a quitting issue here ... I've been vaping for around 4 years!

Unfortunately the doc is pretty useless. Get a different steroid cream each time and reluctant to swab for fungal / bacterial issues.

I have a collection of healing ointments / moisturisers ... I could open my own pharmacy!

I've been offered a cosmetic patch test which is booked in next week. I'd love to think it was one of my many chapsticks ... but even when I just use plain Vaseline I have the same issue.

The e cig is literally my last bet!

Still sorry to hear- but glad it is being checked out, hopefully they can find the cure! Wow vaping for 4 years- congrats and hope that everything clears up for you! I have used some lipsticks that my lips didn't react well too, like those 12 hour lipstick kits, like plastic coating and my mouth would get sore! I just use mainly tinted lip gloss now , and I seem to do OK with those Burts Bees

And you don't know enough about vaping to blame all your ills on it. You're 50. Blame nature.

Dearest Shannon

It appears you don't know enough about the side effects of vaping either. You are running around here blaming vaping for all sorts of unpleasant things in your life. Much to my surprise you haven't blamed vaping for having turned 50 years old yet. I'm sure you would still be only 39 if you kept smoking.

But keep trying, there's always hope. And apparently belief. Just because you "believe" vaping is the cause of all your woes does not make for causation. Perhaps you should look at symptoms associated with quitting smoking as a potential source for all your GI complaints. Yeah - smoking. The real baddie in this scenario. (Although we aren't quite so sure about you either.)

I Hope this helps.

That would be a no.
