Mappa’s film follow-up to 2016’s Yuri On Ice has been officially canceled. The film was initially due for release in 2019 and delayed significantly since. The announcement of its cancelation was shared via a post on X today.

“Regarding the postponed release of "YURI!!! on ICE the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE", we have come to the decision to unfortunately cancel its production.” read the statement from Mappa, adding: “We deeply apologize for not being able to meet the expectations of all those who have been waiting and have continued to support us throughout these years.”

This news is perhaps unsurprising, given the long delays and the studio’s considerable workload, with both Bucchigiri?! and Oblivion Battery airing in this year, as well as at least five other anime series in production, including Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3 and Shinichirō Watanabe’s Lazarus.

Mappa also still have two films in production, the Zombie Land Saga project, and the adaptation of Chainsaw Man’s Reze Arc.

Yuri On Ice originally aired in 2016 to critical and fan acclaim. IGN ranked the series as one of our anime of the decade.
