Marrying batteries to a device?

Forgive the relatively n00bish question,

So I know that the best way to maintain your batteries and discharge and charge them safely is to keep them married in a pair, but does the device come into play also?

For example: two MXJOs that I usually use for my LE80, if I was to purchase another regulated dual 18650 box, would it be safe to use these same married batteries with the new device or should I pick up a whole new pair and keep them exclusive to their device?

Just keep the batteries married to each other, but you can switch devices.
