New to fancy pants vapes, need lots of advice

Hey all!

I used to use a pen sized device from Halo. I would buy my liquid from heavengifts.com

Now I have an eleaf iJustS: http://www.eleafworld.com/ijust-s/ battery and an iJoy tornado top (what do I call this part? Atomiser? tank?)

Basically I need to know:

What liquids are safe to use on this device and where can I buy them for cheap online?
What kind of maintenance do I need to do? What do I need to buy?
-cotton?
-coils? (what coils should I buy and what do the different ohmages mean?)
-anything else?
-tools to make this process easier?

Is this a compatible set up? The reason I am using the iJoy top is because the glass broke on the original eleaf unit. How do I know which coils/heads whatever I can use with my battery?

The iJoy is making popping and crackling noises, is this bad?

Thanks in advance guys! It's all so confusing to me, I've tried to read the posts on this forum but I have no idea what's going on.

Hot water bath/cleaning about once a week, unless you are using really thick / gunky juice. Then more often possibly. Take out the coil before giving her a bath though.

what coils should I buy
Being new to vaping, your probably not ready for coil building unless you are a "go getter" like I am. ;)
I would stick with purchasing some basic coils, anywhere from 1.0ohm to .05ohm, or even clapton coils. @CrazyChef is one of our members, they make coils at https://www.purecoils.com (advertising our local members first) ... however you can also purchase pre-built coils on the internet and the many different e-cig sites. Look down the forms for our vendors section and start price shopping.

Currently, I'm using Japanese Organic Cotton off of ama**n.com -- Decent price and I have prime membership. I've been reading about Cotton Bacon v2 being really good also, or rayon... buy a little of each if you want and decide which works best for you.

The popping and crackling is the juice heating up vaporizing --- typical for an RDTA. These don't work the way you are used to.

To be quite honest with you, I would not have recommended this setup for any staring "vaper" ... this is not a regulated mod and you can blow shit up really quick if you don't have the correct components matched up. Components === coils, battery, etc....

This was my starter kit --- VERY awesome starter and easy to use.

Thanks! @bvgroote if you have any other question regarding coils, I'll try my best to help.

Actually, it is a regulated mod. Just a very simple one. It's meant for people just starting to vape.

Wow thank you so much for all the words!

So can you link me to a coil that would be compatible/appropriate for my RDTA? Should I just use youtube on how to change them over?

How often do you change the cotton?

Are there certain types of juices I shouldn't be using?

I would use cheap juice like this: https://www.heavengifts.com/product...Wattage-E-Juice-E-Liquid-with-11-Flavors.html
when I was starting out. I'm worried I will get the wrong one now and damage something.

Any Kanthal or Stainless steel wire will work as long as the resistance is in the mods range. 0.15 to 3.5Ω
Change your cotton if you burn it or if the taste is off. I usually change every few days some people go longer.
You won't hurt anything with the juice your using or any juice for that matter as long as it's not made in someones bathtub.
http://www.steam-engine.org/coil.asp your best friend if your going to build.
The different ohm's is the resistance of the coil and determines the power drawn from the mod/battery.
Learn ohm's law and do a lot of reading and watch you tube videos.

>> IF it were me <<
Grab a couple of basic single wrap coils. I would get a pair of 1.0ohm and a pair of 0.5 ohm, just so that I could play with the differences and what they do.

I would also grab a couple of basic Clapton simple coils, again just so that I could play with them differences.
https://www.purecoils.com/collections/coils-1/products/basic-clapton-coils

I would grab some Japanese Organic Cotton.
https://www.purecoils.com/products/organic-japanese-cotton-pads

If you want to try different cottons to see how they taste, etc then grab a couple of each. Find out what YOU like.

certain types of juices
These tanks can easily take a 100%VG juice, however I personally like the 30PG/70VG or 20PG/80VG when I mix juice.
I would stick with known and reviewed vendors on purchasing juice. I've heard bad things about the Chinese cheap crap. Flavor is all in the user.

The OP can also google other vendors or look here on the forum vendor lists, that also sell pre-made coils so he has a variety of choices on where to purchase them from, I always do price and stock comparrisons on anything I buy, Welcome to VU bvgroote

Glad you added that, like I wouldn't have wondered

@CrazyChef

Great! So this is an example of a pre-made coil. How often do you replace them? When they start to taste funny or religiously once a month?

Thank you so much everyone, you guys are great!

:D You don't want ME to answer that one... LOL
I actually build my own. And because I do, I have a tendency to throw them out when I want to try something different. I may have only vaped it for 1 tank and decided to build something different.

However, if I WERE purchasing coils, I would make them last as long as I could at the prices I've seen them sold for. From what I've been reading on how others are using / complaining / etc, I would say if they get "gunked" up due to caramel juices or the like, then you can sometimes clean them with hot water and an old toothbrush (not the one used for the toilet). Also, I personally would then make sure to stick them back in my RBA and heat them up so that they don't rust (SS316L won't rust, other metals will) if your not going to use them for a bit.

Changing out the cotton --- way more frequent. Again, that is subjective the juice and how it can "over flavor" wicking. Example being -- I made a coffee type e-juice and DAMN did it take over the flavor. 4 tanks later of a strong fruity e-juice and I could still taste the coffee flavor. That cotton went to the trash quickly.

Haha awesome.

So I've been watching some tutorials, looks like I'll need a rod of some sort to help position the coil, some small wirecutters to cut the ends of the coils off and some tweezers because why not? I got an allen key with the tornado. Any other tools?

So far my shopping list is:

a range of juices
some different coils 0.5ohm-1ohm
some organic cotton
wire cutters
tweezers
rods depending on size of coils?

and I'm good to go!

Here are some ideas. One of them is a complete kit, may save you some money vs putting everything together individually. This will also take you into the next step of building your own coils. BTW -- an Ohm reader is highly recommended (in the kit or separate).

My Personal experience --- I hate the Coil Master 521 Tab --- I couldn't get a consistent coil reading to save my life. I sent it back to Amazon. I'm getting the Geekvape 521 Tab as I've been reading some really good reviews on it.

Coil Master v4 ( I love mine )

Coil Master v3 Kit - Comes with the CM521 Tab Mini (never used this one) and everything to build your own basic coils to start out. (YouTube Video - VapnFagan)

Here is a little cheaper full kit. Looks to be a clone of others possibly.

^^^Hehe cheeky, I am an affiliate marketer by trade, let's leave it at that ;) (actually probably VU and not you....nevermind)

Anyway I have found a couple of kit options that looks really cool, not sure if they come with the rods though which seem pretty useful. Thanks for the help!

When they stop tasting the way you like your vape to taste, you can replace them. Some people change every week, some people go 2 or 3 months on the same coil.
I think that unit will work pretty good with any juice that is 20%-50% PG. (pg is thinner than vg so wicks faster)
the popping is usually just air pockets in the wick caused by the juice evaporating and being drawn in to the wick. It's nothing to worry about.
as for how to replace them, it should be in your user manual, but normally, they just unscrew like a little light bulb, and normally, you have to take the tank apart a bit to get at them. Its in the manual though.
